Money and space in Brazil: a study of selected areas

ABSTRACT

The aim of this piece is to analyse, under the post-Keynesian framework, the relationship between the centrality and the dynamism of regions, and the behaviour of some regional financial variables in Brazil from 1988 to 2000. This paper undertakes the analysis using a special geo-economic delineation presented by Lemos, Guerra and Moro (2000LEMOS, M., GUERRA, L. e MORO, S. (2000), A nova configuração regional brasileira: sua geografia econômica e os determinantes locacionais da indústria. In: XXVIII Encontro Nacional de Economia, Campinas. 1 CD-ROM.) and the existence of the polygon of development proposed by Diniz (1993DINIZ, C.C. (1993), Desenvolvimento Poligonal no Brasil: nem desconcentração nem contínua polarização. Revista Nova Economia, Belo Horizonte, v. 3, nº 1, p. 35-64.). The results show the relation between the centrality of a region and the presence of institutional characteristics that make the credit easier to be created during the analysed period.
