Abstract
This article, instigated mainly by Merleau-Ponty's interpretations of Socrates and Montaigne and by the article Biography and autobiography: tangencies and secances by Antonio Valverde, discusses the relationship between life and work, considering two perspectives: the importance of the work for permanence - memory - of an individual existence; the reach and philosophical validity of the methodological strategy of resorting to the examination of biographies and autobiographies in order to interpret a given work.
