Teacher in the 21st Century: working conditions in a Brazilian public university

Abstract

The article presents the conditions of teaching work at a Brazilian public university in the context of changes in the education sector. The objective is to analyze teachers’ perceptions about work in relation to work organization and the implications for the health / disease binomial. This is a study with a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews on issues that address the work process of teachers, based on their experiences, desires and sensations. Seven teachers were interviewed, and the speech analysis was based on the collective subject’s speech method. The results show the working conditions of teachers under intensification process, extension of working hours and illness of these workers. In the scenario presented, the work is linked to diffuse gears evidenced in aspects of work organization. A current theme is addressed, which responds to the need to understand work and its deleterious effects in order to contribute to future transformations.
