Innovation, science and something else
Innovation is a modern concept associated to the materialization of new materials, products and processes that incorporate economic value and/or social and environmental advantages to the society. The technological innovation is based on the knowledge accumulated by the important step-by-step with which the scientific development makes incremental advances as the years go by. The area of materials has been able to clearly demonstrate the role these advances play to impact our every-day life, both in the professional and personal levels. The increasing speed with which new materials, processes and products reach practical use has allowed advances on the use of equipments and has improved the health of the human beams. As examples, one may consider the recording and information storage equipments that make use of modern metallic glasses and other materials, with exceptional optical and electromagnetic properties, leading to a continuous miniaturization of devices, with overwhelming quality. Also, materials for biomedical use may be considered, being utilized to substitute functions and parties of the human body, such as prostheses for kneecaps, artificial muscles and dental implants.
The strong scientific basis necessary for the adequate project, processing and finishing of these materials requires theory and experimentation, but also much creativity. The latter is certainly exercised in every scientific work, but is specially linked to the artistic work. This has driven to the comprehension that, in several cases, science and art are activities with important converging attitudes, procedures and conception. With bigger or smaller degree of intuition, with theoretical basis or expressing interior vital human senses, both create, develop and tend to innovate. The area of materials, in which on goes deep into fundamental concepts and may be guided by experimental trial and errors, is also that in which one interprets the micro and substructural morphology, aesthetic and conceptual, to create technology. The Journal Materia, by means of the article that it publishes, travels within these dimensions of theoretical, experimental, of the science and conceptual art, to innovate. And it counts on your participation to be kept ahead of its time, producing today what will be transformed into the upcoming innovation.
