INVITED EDITORIAL

Editorial in honor of the 10 years of our journal

Jair Escobar

When Dr. Paulo Oscar Teitelbaum invited me to contribute an editorial about the 10 years of our journal, I was flattered by the invitation and surprised by how time flies. I had not realized that so much time had gone by. At the time I became editor of Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul (RPRS), Dr. Luis Carlos Mabilde kindly invited me to assume the position, which made me feel honored and thankful. I shared that great responsibility with the other members of the editorial board: Drs. Rugero Levy, Hamilton Fontoura, Carmen Keidan, Lais Knijnik, Marilia Ghelen, Flávio Pechansky, Gilberto Brofman and Rosane Posimczyk. Dr. Rugero left soon to assume the position of financial director of Sociedade de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul. We also could count on the competence and experience of the members of the advisory board: Drs. Aldo Duarte, Antônio Carlos Pires, Cláudio Eizirik, Cláudio Osório, Flávio Rotta Correa, Maria Lucrécia Zavaschi, Marlene Silveira Araújo, Raul Hartke, Rogério Aguiar, Sérgio Machado, Sérgio de Paula Ramos and Sidnei Schestatski, as well as the valuable help of our secretary Silvia Bennemann.

During our management, the first change to the graphic design of the journal was implemented. The journal's size, layout and visual presentation of the text were changed, which made it more up-to-date, with the purpose of providing the readers with a journal that was easier to browse and read. We also changed the journal's sections: the table of contents, in addition to being printed on the title page, also appears on the back cover; the abstracts in Portuguese, keywords and abstracts in English were placed at the end of the articles, following the references, which reduced the initial volume of fragmented information, thus giving more emphasis to the title of the study and the authors' names. Furthermore, the improvement of the graphic quality, in addition to the larger characters and wider space between lines, made the text clearer and easier to read. We tried to innovate in terms of the contents of the studies and came out with the idea of the "debate forum". This section was used to publish an article that incited debate or controversy about a given topic, and the article received critical comments from two colleagues. In the news section, we hoped to published letters from our colleagues containing opinions, reviews and suggestions that would make our journal more dynamic and enhance our readers' participation.

Throughout the years, our journal has gone through several changes. This is the result of the creativity and participation of the members of its editorial boards. However, at the same time, the journal has contributed to maintain the bases of the psychiatry of Rio Grande do Sul acknowledged in Brazil. The respect for diverse ways of thinking and the acceptance of several areas of psychiatry is a characteristic of our journal. Therefore, all of us have a great reason to celebrate our journal's 30 years of success.
