Bioethical analysis on sterilization in people with intellectual disabilities

The study analyzes the opinion of judges, doctors, psychologists, members of Research Ethics Committee, relatives of people with intellectual disabilities and public in general, on the sterilization for people with intellectual disabilities that set out in the Brazilian Law 9.263, of January 23th, 1996. The data were analyzed from the Unesco's Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, considering the principle of autonomy and its articles 7 and 8. It is concluded, with this study, that the law requires adjustments and must consider bioethics principles related to human rights and mental disabilities, that underlies the regulatory from this perspective, constituting valuable and safer source for future decision making.
