Evaluation of food security of solid waste segregators in a region of the municipality of Piraquara, Paraná

ABSTRACT

The solid waste segregators of recyclable materials perform their hard work in poor conditions, what make important to assure an adequate diet. So, this study evaluated the feeding conditions of these workers in Piraquara, Paraná. The research was developed based on System for Food and Nutrition Surveillance (SISVAN) and Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. Fifty-six workers were identified and interviewed. The majority (68%) spent more than half of their income on food purchases, but 29% reported going hungry, being 13% every day. When food intake frequency was analyzed, there was a high intake of beans (94%) and rice (92%), low intake of fruits and vegetables (16%) and regular consumption of soft drinks (20%). This shows that it is necessary to guarantee the right to adequate food among these workers.
