The use of the focus group in qualitative researching

This study aims to present the use of focus group as a technique for data collection in a doctoral dissertation resulting from qualitative research. The focus group as a research technique uses group discussion sessions focused on specific topics to be debated among its participants. The research focused on sexuality in nursing care from a cultural perspective, developed and carried out among two groups of nurses: nursing professors and nursing assistants. The focus group was composed of eight meetings, each planned separately. The evaluation process occurred through the interviews with the nurses, highlighting critical thinking and non-alienation as positive features. The possibility of this technique unveils singular meanings and to what they are related based on the subjects' points of view. The focus group technique facilitated the sexuality approach, deconstructing and reconstructing concepts as well as searching for new answers to the problems the theme raises.
