“From the rubber tree to the tea”: A History of Masters and Godparents in the Brazilian Amazon.

Abstract:

The article reflects on the historical and anthropological contexts about the emergence of Brazilian religions of ayahuasca, whose biography of the founders will be described in chronological order, considering that they are agents of healing and social transformation, who through doctrines healed people in vulnerability in the Amazon Rainforest - during the cycles of Brazilian gum extraction - in the early 20th Century. We seek to understand the contexts of formation of the Santo Daime, Barquinha and União do Vegetal Spiritualist Lines, by accessing the institutional, mystical and metaphysical phenomena of these symbolic systems through the description and analysis of their myths, cosmologies and rituals, as well the proximity and distance of the groups in relation to indigenous, vegetalists and african matrices that, in contemporary times, are reinterpreted before the ritual use of the drink in Brazil and abroad.
