Open-access Dangerous liaisons: the deterioration of the relations between the governments of João Goulart and John Kennedy in 1962

The 1962 year hasn’t been studied with emphasis by Brazilian historiography that is interested in the government of Goulart and the 1964 Brazilian coup. In this article, I am going to write the bilateral relationship between Brazil and the United States during that year. I am also going to show how the position of Goulart’s independent foreign policy (Política Externa Independente) in relation to Cuba throughout the years was the main cause of the distance between countries, and the reason for the destabilization policy supported by the USA. In order to do so, our interlocutors will be the official documentation produced by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speeches given by the Brazilian president, the big press, letters between presidents Goulart and Kennedy, and documents produced by the American government.
