The port, the customs of Colônia do Sacramento and its relationship with Rio de Janeiro, 1680-1750

Abstract:

In the first half of the 18th century, the major ports of entry in Brazil were Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Recife, São Luís and Santos. This article aims to analyze the port and customs of Colônia do Sacramento and its relationship with Rio de Janeiro, considering its classifications as “collateral” and “main”. In this sense, as methodology, it was about the knowledge and experiences used by businessmen who were winners of the tithing contract around the coastal commerce in the South Atlantic; it was also analyzed provisions, letters and requirements of several administration and commerce agents, documents that were located in the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, at Lisbon. It can be concluded that although historiography approaches ports and customs as a single block, there are differences between the Colony and the city of Rio de Janeiro.
