The Escola Técnica Nacional and the civil-military dictatorship: history and memory of a school and the struggle of students (1960-1966)

Abstract:

The article analyzes the transformations of the Escola Técnica Nacional between 1960 and 1966. Directed by Celso Suckow da Fonseca, the student struggle and the daily life of schools was marked by the industrial education reform and the polarization between left and right. The 1964 coup and the mobilization of professors and students against the left was a milestone in the reforms of industrial education and in the change of name of the institution, which was renamed Escola Técnica Federal Celso Suckow da Fonseca in 1967. In the analysis, we used the student newspaper O Micron and the research in the Digital Hemeroteca of the National Library, to understand the transformations in the daily school life.
