Statistical information and public policy: current future challenges

Statistical information plays a key role in the conception, design and implementation of public policy, which guide governmental decisions and actions (both direct and indirect). Thus - and as a result of changes in the scope of government activities-the demand for statistical information (public and official) has increased in scope and scale. Understanding the dynamics of this demand has become a challenge for official statistical agencies. In fact, from the supply side, however, in spite of the fact that newer and better technologies introduced, there is always an awkward rigidity in the production process itself. Public statistical agencies must strike a difficult balance between their legitimacy (related to the demand for statistics) and reliability (from the supply side, as it affects scientific research). Statistical agencies are confronted with several tough challenges for the future. this paper will address some of these challenges and propose practical measures at present that will help deal with the future.
