Interviews with English teachers of Belo Horizonte’s local public schools revealed that they are largely influenced by the varied and conflicting discourses on globalisation and English in the world. Consequently a number of contradictions in their speeches were noticed, which are also the concrete expression of their dilemmas. The analysis of the interviews was carried out according to the concepts of hegemonic and counter-hegemonic discourse, defined within the theoretical frameworks of Antonio Gramsci and Mikhail Bakhtin.
