Taking into account political, social and historical issues which encompass the term "brasiguaio" and the resulting erasure of its symbolic and ideological construction, this paper discusses the construction of local and global identities in the contemporary Brazilian diaspora. These identities are characterized by conflict generated by the collapse of old truths and by the production of new forms of social positionings. In this complex context, the focus is on "brasiguayan" students, in this case these are children of Brazilian parents who have come back from Paraguay. These children, in the homogeneizing tradition of Brazilian schools, can, very easily, make this essentialized brasiguayan identity invisible until the moment their reading aloud or their written texts emerge and they are pointed out as problems by their teachers. At school the hibridation of their writing and of their reading places them under an evaluating spotlight and labels them as "brasiguaios".
