ABSTRACT
This article examines the reactions to Antônio Callado’s novel Quarup (1967) that were published in Jornal do Brasil and Correio da Manhã, and gives particular attention to the way in which readers saw the novel as expressing the complexity of different political issues during a moment of crisis. In one sense, Quarup was read as a novel about the “Brazilian crisis”. But, more than that, Quarup was perceived as expressing a moment of inflection and transformation of literary forms in Brazil. The text also shows how censorship and AI-5 had consequences for the activities of Antônio Callado, thus affirming that the military dictatorship restricted the cultural ant artistic debate, and limited the horizons of the political imagination of the period.
