The main thesis of kantian Critique of Judgment’s Aesthetics sustains that judgments of taste, which are subjective, based on a disinterested pleasure and not grounded on concepts of understanding or ideas of reason, are universally valid. "Aesthetic universality" is the key-concept by means of which the third Critique, having already disenfranchised aesthetic rationalism with the theory of the non-conceptuality of taste, disparage at the other front the aesthetic skepticism from defenders of the incommunicability of the beautiful. The universality-issue is discussed in the second "moment" of the Analytic of the Beautiful, leading to the conclusion that "the beautiful is that which, apart from a concept, pleases universally". Kant draws this conclusion after having established in chapter 8 the distinction between the universality of the aesthetic response and that of determinant judgments of theoretical and practical knowledge. The former is termed "aesthetic universality" (ästhetische Allgemeinheit), "general validity" (Gemingültigkeit), and "subjective universal validity" (subjektive Allgemeingültigkeit), whereas the latter is designated by the presumably equivalent titles of "logical universality" (logische Allgemeinheit) and "objective universal validity" (objektive Allgemeingültigkeit). In this paper, I shall argue that three levels of ambiguity concerning the use of these concepts compromise the distinctness of the notion of aesthetic universality. Firstly, I shall analyze a set of difficulties in Kant’s presentation of the concepts of "universality" (Allgemeinheit) and "universal validity" (Allgemeingültigkeit). Secondly, I shall discuss the damages brought about by the conflation in Kant’s treatment of the notions of "aesthetic universality" and "subjective universal validity". Finally, I shall propose the distinction between objective and logical universality in order to respond to the question: regarding their quantity, judgments of taste are more properly defined in contrast to judgments which are universally valid because they are determinant - given the role of the concept or idea in their determining ground? Or against judgments which are universal insofar their truth-value remain determinable when their subject-concept is universally quantified? More succinctly: the universality of the beautiful is anti-conceptual or only anti-logical?
  • On the Beautiful and the Ugly

    Parret, Herman

Classical aesthetics sees the experience of the beautiful as an anthropological necessity. But, in fact, the beautiful is rather the central category designating classical art, and one can question the relevance of this category considering contemporary art. The reference term most frequently used for contemporary art is interesting: works of art solicit the interests of my faculties (the cognitive-intellectual, the pragmatic community-oriented moral, the affective aesthetic faculties). It is interesting to notice that the categories of the beautiful and the ugly have an axiological-moral value. It looks as if the qualities of contemporary art works are judged according to the intensity of the impact on the interests of our faculties. It reveals important, in this respect, to distinguish the ugly from the sublime and the monstrous. Kant’s Third Critique is of some importance in defining these categories.
  • O Sublime explicado às crianças

    Figueiredo, Virginia

As indicated by its title, the aim of this essay is debating with the contemporary French philosophy reception of Kant’s concept of the sublime, particularly with Jean-François Lyotard. As a consequence of this French influence, instead of highlighting, as traditional commentators tend to do, the moral and systematic implications of Kantian sublime, this essay takes Kant’s notion as intended in the first place to account for an essential aspect of our experience of art. But, at the same time, I want to distance myself from Lyotard’s interpretation and object to his view that Burke’s notion of the sublime is more adequate than Kant’s conception for understanding contemporary art. In particular, I want to hold that it is possible to understand time (that Lyotard takes to be the central aspect of Burke’s notion) as being also a key feature of Kantian sublime.

This article addresses the issue of religious tolerance in the German Enlightenment through the analysis and interpretation of selected excerpts of Lessing’s Nathan der Weise (1779). It aims to point out that the origins of this play are closely related to the theological debate ("Fragmentenstreit") between Lessing and Johann Melchior Goeze (chief pastor of the Church of St. Catharine in Hamburg), therefore making the play possible to be read as a reaction and a response to the criticisms and objections of the latter.

This paper aims at, firstly, examining the originality of the concept of "interesting" in the young Friedrich Schlegel’s "On the study of ancient poetry", in view of the uniqueness of the analysis and the method employed by the author to substantiate art critique. Secondly, highlighting how, when differentiating the Modern Greek poetry, Schlegel establishes a singular interpretation of poetry in general, in an open dialogue with Winckelmann and Schiller. And finally, evaluating whether Schlegel succeeds to definitely overcome the "quarrel between ancient and modern" when he articulates a speech that brings together art history and philosophy of art.

The article examines how Heidegger, by looking at nature, considers the technical and artistic ‘act of production’ (Stellen) regarding certain crucial notions in the history of thought, from the foundational Greek terms as techné, poíesis and physis, and its equivalent in Latin translation, to its rearrangement in modern metaphysics.

The early Wittgenstein conceived of ethics and aesthetics as one and the same. This essay aims to provide an interpretation of this idea. It examines the way it is put forward in the Tractatus and in some remarks from the Tagebücher 1914-1916, and argues that the unity of ethics and aesthetics is for Wittgenstein a way of looking at the world in such a way that the world does not appear to set limits for human life. Ethics extends the ability to confer meaning that men and women use in the realm of art-making, dealing with particular objects, to the realm of life and of the world taken as a whole. Claiming that ethics and aesthetics are one Wittgenstein points out that at the roots of ethics there is a certain way of looking at the world, a certain disposition towards life. This point of view on the world does not attribute value to the world because of the way it is. The world is seen, instead, as a source of wonder, and it is this fact that makes it valuable.
  • Comentário filológico e crítica materialista

    Gagnebin, Jeanne Marie

The idea of the "end of history", posited in the final chapter of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Mind, grounded the beginning of a discussion unleashed by the position assumed by Alexandre Kojève in his courses on Hegel in Paris, in the 1930s, and by their publication at the end of the 1940s (being reedited in 1968). This point of view reappeared with Francis Fukuyama’s article on the "end of history", published in 1989, in which he commemorated the end of the "real socialism" and the rise of The United States of America’s complete world hegemony. Now that the euphoria about the "new world order" subsided, also in virtue of successive major economic crisis, it is interesting to turn back to the question of the conditions under which concepts associated to that theme, especially the noun "post-history" and the adjective "post-historical" are acceptable. My point in this article is that aesthetics is a field in which these concepts are defensible. As examples of fruitful aesthetic reflections that take advantage of these concepts, I point out the notion of "post-historical art", by Arthur Danto, and the aesthetic unfoldings of the "post-history" issue, just as sustained by Vilém Flusser.

Deconstruction, precisely because it doesn’t prescribe neither an aesthetics nor a policy, acts as an aperture strategy to/of the different and the alterity, producing in this way a nomadic proposal about thinking and action. Several categories that have focused the reflection in aesthetics and in politics for centuries, such as representation, judgment, interpretation, sense, signature, secret, etc, they met their own powerlessness or their dark side or just a new "inappropriate" reading trough a deconstructive analysis. This analysis contributes to think otherwise an aesthetics and a politics to come.
