ABSTRACT
In this paper, the authors check the historiography written about the slavery in Andalusia during the Early Modern Period, which had tried to quantify the number of slaves in the region. In order to analyse it, this paper pays attention to the methodologies and different kinds of historical sources used, especially notarial records and ecclesiastial records of baptism. Both have been the most important sources for the historians interested in the modern slavery in Andalusia. Using a comparative perspective and unprecedented primary information, this paper offers some methodological considerations in order to study this issue in a scientific way.
