Brief Background
|
The Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências are the official publication of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, published continuously since 1929, making it the oldest Brazilian scientific journal in uninterrupted circulation. Prior to that date, the journal was titled Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Ciências (1917/19) and later Revista de Sciências (1920/21/22/26/28), always on an irregular schedule. During this early period, it is worth highlighting the article published, in 1926, by Einstein on the theory of light. |
Open Access

This journal follows the Open Access model, granting virtual access, without restrictions (including financial barriers), to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties under an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), providing immediate, free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, harvest them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. When submitting the manuscript for review and potential publication, authors must agree to the journal’s Open Access policy as the final step before completing their submission. |

This multidisciplinary scientific journal, with national and international circulation, aims to publish research advances by both researchers working in Brazil and scientists of other nationalities affiliated with leading research centers abroad, having research excellence as parameter. Its purpose is to publish original research findings across diverse branches of science, represented by the sections of the Academy. |

Preprints
|
The AABC permit authors to deposit preprints of their manuscripts on reputable preprint servers such as, but not limited to, ArXiv.org and bioRxiv.org. However, authors must update these records to inform acceptance or publication by the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. A preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for journal submission and deposited on reliable preprint servers before or concurrently with its journal submission. This practice, together with continuous publication, serves as mechanism to accelerate research communication. Preprints share with journals the novelty of articles publication and circumvent the use of a double-blind peer review process. Preprints submitted to the AABC will be handled and evaluated in the same manner as voluntarily submitted manuscripts, through a single-blind peer review process. |
Peer Review Process
|
The AABC adopt the process of single-blind peer review, where the identities of reviewers remain confidential, even after the article’s publication. The manuscript is received after passing the checklist applied by the journal’s administrative team; it is then assigned to one of the Associated Editors for initial evaluation and subsequently forwarded to an Area Editor, and may be rejected at any of these stages. At least two reviewers are invited, in order to obtain the minimum of two opinions required for a decision to be made on the manuscript, unless an immediate rejection is issued. The reviewers invited to provide assessments may be based either in Brazil or abroad. However, they must not be affiliated with the same institutions as the authors. The name of the responsible editor for handling the manuscript is published alongside the article. |
Open Data
|
According to the editorial policy of the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the authors must inform if the data, materials and methods used in conducting the research will be available to other researchers for the purposes of reproducing the results or replicating the procedures employed. This declaration must be placed by the authors immediately before the Acknowledgments section, explicitly indicating the availability or not of such resources for other researchers. If the authors choose to share this information, it should be specified where this material can be accessed, preferably on a reliable digital repository. |
Fees
|
The AABC do not charge for submission, review or processing articles However, accepted articles with more than five (5) figures incur an additional fee at the start of the production process for publication. A fee of R$ 100,00 (one hundred reais) will be charged for payments in Brazil, or $ 50,00 (fifty dollars) for each figure exceeding this limit. Tables with more than 12 columns and/or 24 rows will be treated as figures for billing purposes. All figures will be published in black and white in the print version and in color in the online version. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
|
All authors must review and accept responsibility for the content and register the contribution of each author at the end of the manuscript. In case of questions regarding authorship, the corresponding author will be contacted first and, if necessary, all co-authors will be consulted. In the event of an impasse, the authors’ affiliated institutions or funding agencies involved in the research may be contacted. In accordance with our editorial policy, no changes to the author list – whether additions or removals – are permitted after the first round of review. Any unauthorized modification will lead to the rejection of the manuscript. With respect to subjects involved in the research, the editorial process requires that authors submit documentation such as approval from the relevant ethics committee, consent from the individuals involved, clinical trial registration records, and other pertinent materials. Should any doubt or question arise, the Editor-in-Chief may contact the corresponding author and, if necessary, all authors to request complete documentation. In case of misconduct confirmed by the editorial commission or administrative team, a editorial committee will be convened to investigate and decide, and the outcome will subsequently be communicated to the authors. Any published article in which misconduct is identified will remain indexed in the SciELO database as retracted. The retraction will document the reason for retraction with proper reference, upon notification by the author, editor, or another authorized party, and will be published in the same journal. In case of errors or mistakes, regardless of their nature or origin, which do not constitute misconduct, the editorial committee will conduct an analysis and, upon verification and approval, correct them by publishing an erratum as promptly as possible. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest
|
Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts arise when authors, reviewers, or editors hold interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Upon submission, the authors are responsible for identifying and disclosing any financial or other conflicts that may have affected the work. Any actual or potential conflict of interest, the author(s) must declare them in a separate document signed and attached to the submission platform. Adoption of Similarity Software
|
The journal Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences employs the integrated program Crossref Similarity Check to screen all submitted original manuscripts for potential plagiarism and duplication against previously published texts in all the original manuscripts submitted after verified the compliance with the instructions for authors, before the manuscript is forwarded to the handling editor. Due to the varying characteristics of the subject areas covered by the AABC, each editor individually determines the acceptance similarity percentage indicated by Crossref. The editor may then contact the authors for clarification or immediately reject the manuscript without proceeding to peer review. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

The AABC is examining, in consultation with its broad editorial board, which types of Artificial Intelligence will be permitted in the journal and in which contexts they may be used to inform an update to its editorial policy. |
Ethics Committee

Authors are required to attach a declaration of approval from the institutional ethics committee responsible for approving the research, and to cite the protocol/authorization at the beginning of the ‘Materials and Methods’ section. |

Authors of articles published in the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences retain the copyright of their work, licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 license, which permits unrestricted reuse and distribution of the articles provided the original work is properly cited. The journal Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências considers for submission, evaluation and publication the submissions made exclusively through its online manuscript management system. Once your manuscript adheres to the instructions below, please access the system at https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/aabc-scielo. Please, read these instructions carefully and follow them rigorously. This will ensure that the review and publication of your article are as efficient and swift as possible. The editors reserve the right to return (unsubmit) articles that do not comply with these instructions. During the manuscript submission process, authors will go through seven steps in the online manuscript management system, during which they must enter all article information in English. Please pay particular attention to step 5, which concerns the indication of the reviewers. At least five reviewers must be recommended, adhering to the following criteria:
After undergoing the Crossref similarity check program and the initial editorial screening by the associate editor, an area editor will be appointed, and then the manuscripts will be evaluated by at least two reviewers from educational and/or research institutions both national and international, provided their scientific credentials are verified. Following possible revisions and suggestions, the article can be either accepted or rejected based on the reports of the reviewers. Please note that no changes to the author list – whether additions or removals – will be permitted after the first round of review. If any unauthorized modification is detected, the article will be rejected. |
Types of Documents Accepted
Unpublished results of studies or experiments conducted directly by the authors, following the standard structure: Title Page, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, Author Contributions, Data Availability, and References.
Reviews may only be submitted upon invitation, but they will still undergo the peer-review process. However, a proposal can be sent to the Publications Office via e-mail at aabc@abc.org.br. This email must include the proposed review’s topics and authors, the abstract, the AABC subject area in which the article would fit, and a justification explaining why this topic would be of particular interest to that field. After the editorial board evaluates the proposal, the authors will be notified whether it has been approved.
The AABC permits authors to deposit preprints of their articles on servers such as ArXiv, bioRxiv, and SciELO Preprints. Authors must update those preprint records once the article has been accepted/published by the AABC.
They will be subject to editing and review, and must not contain material that has been submitted to or published in another journal. Letters referring to an article published in AABC must not exceed 250 words (excluding references) and must be received within 4 weeks of the article’s online publication. Letters not related to an AABC published article must not exceed 500 words (excluding references). A letter must not have more than ten references and may include up to one figure or table.
They aim to report an important and concise contribution to the research, which progressed to the stage where the results should be made public and available to other researchers of the same field. A short communication must also include an Abstract (100 words or less, in this case), a brief introduction (up to 200 words), and must not exceed 1,500 words. Tables and Figures may be included in the text, but, in doing so, the text must be proportionally reduced. This type of publication in the AABC must contain extremely significant contributions, for it is a type of highly competitive article. |

The contributions of each author must be explicitly indicated in a separate section in the text before the references, using the CREDiT taxonomy. |
Manuscript Preparation
|
The texts must be submitted in DOC, DOCX, or RTF format. Manuscripts in Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry may be prepared in TEX, AMS-TEX, or LaTeX. Provided the .BIB file is also included. Submissions in any language other than the English will be immediately rejected. There is no limit on the number of authors or the word count, but the editorial board reserves the right to reject articles that are unnecessarily long or list an excessive number of authors. Articles exceeding 50 pages (including figures and tables) must receive prior approval from the editorial board. In such cases, please contact us in advance via email at aabc@abc.org.br. It is mandatory to include the ORCID of the corresponding author in the submission through the online system. The ORCID of all other authors must be provided directly in the manuscript body. |
Article Submission Format
|
Whenever possible, the article should follow the structure below:
Contains the title, running title (up to 50 characters), key words (4-6, separated by commas), authors’ full names, complete addresses for each author (institution, department, street, number, neighborhood, postal code, city, state, and country), ORCID of all authors, and the name and e-mail address of the corresponding author.
It must be up to 200 words and present the main findings of the article, including a brief introduction, the objectives of the word, and a conclusion based on the current results. If the authors are submitting an invited/authorized review, the abstract should address the main topic of the review and explicitly state its contribution to the field. The abstract must not be divided into sections and must not include citations/references.
All the text must be written in double spacing using Times New Roman, 12-point font or an equivalent, provided that the legibility is preserved. Please organize your manuscript into the following sections whenever possible: 1. Introduction; 2. Materials and Methods; 3. Results; 4. Discussion; 5. Conclusions; 6. Author Contributions; 7. Data Availability; 8. Acknowledgments; 9. References; 10. Figure and Table Legends, if applicable. |
Digital Assets
|
Figures Only high-resolution figures (minimum 300 dpi) will be accepted. All illustrations—including drawings, graphs, maps, photographs, schematics, etc.—are considered “Figures” for consistency. Their tentative placement should be indicated in the text by simple reference. Every figure, even those intended as Supplementary Material, must be cited by its respective number throughout the manuscript. Figures must be submitted according to the following specifications:
Figure legends must be sent on a separate page, double-spaced. Each linear dimension of the smallest characters and symbols must be no less than 2 mm after reduction. Both colored and black-and-white figures are accepted. Tables Tables must be submitted in Word (DOC/DOCX) or Excel (XLS/XLSX) format, never as images. Tables may be embedded in the text and must be numbered with Roman numerals (Table I, Table II, Table III etc.). |
Supplementary Materials
|
All supplementary items must be individually identified and cited in the text of the article with an “S” prefix (Figure S1, Table SI, Appendix S1 etc.), and will be published only in the online version of the article. |
Citations and References
Authors are responsible for the accuracy of all citations, as well as their corresponding references. Published articles or those ‘In press’ may be included, provided they are updated upon the article’s acceptance. Personal communication (Smith, personal communication) must be authorized in writing by the individuals involved. References to thesis, conference abstracts (not published in indexed journals), and manuscripts in preparation or submitted, but not yet accepted, should be cited in-text as (Smith et al., unpublished data) and must NOT be included in the reference list. References must be cited in-text in the following format, without quotation marks, ‘Smith 2004’, ‘Smith & Wesson 2005’, or, in case of three or more authors, ‘Smith et al. 2006’. If two or more authors share the same name and year of publication, the references must be differentiated by lowercase letters, for example ‘Smith 2004a’, ‘Smith 2004b’ etc. The AABC do not use tagged or numbered citation styles for indicating citations and references in the text. Manuscripts submitted with those styles will be returned to the authors (unsubmitted) for correction.
References should be listed alphabetically by the first author’s surname, following the order SURNAME XY, where X and Y are the author’s initials. If there are more than 10 authors in the reference, please use SURNAME XY ET AL., without listing the remaining authors. The name of the journals must be abbreviated correctly without italics, periods, or commas. For correct journal abbreviations, please consult the major databases in which the journal is indexed, or the abbreviation list available on the Web of Science. The proper abbreviation for the Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências is An Acad Bras Cienc.
