Brief History
|
The journal "Arquivos de Gastroenterologia," founded in 1964 by Prof. Dr. José Fernando Pontes, was initially published quarterly. Starting in 2024, it will adopt a continuous publication flow system, expediting the publication of already approved papers. The institution directly responsible for the journal is the Brazilian Institute for Studies and Research in Gastroenterology and Other Specialties (IBEPEGE). The journal is the official publication body for the following entities:
Committed to stimulating scientific production and valuing medical literature, it aims to publish original scientific papers from national and international researchers. The abbreviated title of the journal is "Arq. Gastroenterol.," which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic captions. |
Compliance with Open Science
|
Authors must fill out and submit the Open Science Compliance Form with their manuscript. In this form, authors are asked to indicate: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location. (b) whether data, program codes, and other materials underlying the manuscript text are correctly cited and referenced; and, (c) whether they accept options for openness in the peer review process. |
Open Access
|
This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including no financial barriers) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open Access is a condition whereby the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), permitting immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

Ethics in Publication
|
The "Arquivos de Gastroenterologia" adopts and uses the guidelines and recommendations of the COPE Committee on Publication Ethics. Research articles involving human beings must indicate, in the Methods section, their express agreement with ethical standards and with the participants' due free and informed consent. Research with humans must include the approval number from the Research Ethics Committee. Brazilian studies must comply with Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council of the Ministry of Health (Brazil), which deals with the Code of Ethics for Research on Human Beings. For studies outside Brazil, they must comply with the Helsinki Declaration. Studies involving animals must explicitly agree with international ethical principles (e.g., Committee for Research and Ethical Issues of the International Association for the Study of Pain, published in PAIN, 16:109-110, 1983) and national instructions (Laws 6638/79, 9605/98, Decree 24665/34) regulating research with animals and include the approval number from the Animal Research Ethics Committee. The journal "Arquivos de Gastroenterologia" supports the policies for clinical trial registration of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), recognizing the importance of these initiatives for the registration and international dissemination of information about clinical studies, in open access. Approval by an appropriate Ethics Committee is an indispensable requirement for any research involving human beings or any human material. Authors must include in the manuscript the name of the ethics committee responsible for the approval, along with the project's reference number. Additionally, all authors must strictly adhere to the requirements set by the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors). Therefore, only clinical research articles that have received an identification number in one of the Clinical Trials Registries validated by the criteria established by the WHO and ICMJE, whose addresses are available on the ICMJE website, will be accepted for publication. The identification number must be registered in "Methods". To ensure that the study complies with good practice standards, it is recommended to use the checklist below. The journal's objective is to publish studies of an original nature, clinical or surgical, techniques, and epidemiological studies in the areas of Endoscopy, Surgery, Hepatology, Digestive Motility, Clinical Gastroenterology, Experimental Surgery, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Clinical Pathology of Gastroenterology, and finally, Nutrition. In addition, it publishes Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Consensus, Brief Communications, Systematic Review Articles, and E-Videos. |

Preprints

The use of "preprints" is an option and choice of the authors, and the journal accepts the submission of manuscripts previously deposited on the SciELO Preprints server. |
Peer Review Process
|
Submitted manuscripts undergo an initial assessment by the Editor-in-Chief, who verifies their alignment with the journal’s scope and compliance with the editorial submission guidelines. If necessary, the author will be notified of any inconsistencies in the manuscript, which may lead to immediate rejection or require revisions to meet the journal’s submission criteria, as outlined in the Instructions for Authors. Once the manuscript is approved at this stage, an Associate Editor in the relevant subject area is assigned. This editor will reassess the submission’s suitability and either select reviewers from the journal’s existing pool or invite new reviewers. The Associate Editor oversees the peer review process and supports the editorial decision in conjunction with the Editor-in-Chief. The Associate Editor’s name will be published alongside the article as the responsible Associate Editor. The editorial office is responsible for anonymizing the manuscript by removing author names, institutional affiliations, and other identifying information. Original articles are then evaluated by at least two independent reviewers selected by the editor through a double-blind peer review process. |
Open Data

As a good practice, following Open Science to ensure security and transparency, the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia encourage the "sharing of data, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from research that generally underlies the texts of articles published by journals." The research data from manuscripts approved for publication may, as of 2024, be stored in the SciELO Data repository (in progress). It is recommended to store observed, collected, or generated data to validate the results of the original research, whether raw data, processed data, audio, video, code, software, algorithms, protocols, and methods. |
Fee Charging
|
No fees are required from authors for submission or article evaluation. An Article Processing Charge (APC) is applied only after the manuscript is finally accepted for publication. The APC is R$ 1,250.00 (or US$ 250) per accepted article. The Editorial Board may grant full or partial waivers upon request, based on the justification provided by the authors. Situations that may justify a waiver include manuscripts authored by Associate Editors of the journal, editorials and review articles commissioned by the Editorial Board; and submissions from authors without available funding, provided this is clearly stated. Regarding the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Manuscript Preparation
|
Artificial intelligence (AI) or similar technologies do not qualify for authorship. The author must carefully supervise the use of AI to assist in writing texts and formatting. Any AI tool cannot be included as a co-author. They must be described if used to create content or assist in writing or editing. If they are part of the design or formal research methods, they should be included in the Methods section. |
Sex and Gender Issues
|
The editorial team of the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. Additionally, the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia observes the policy of gender equity in the formation of its editorial body. |

Authors of articles published by the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia retain the copyrights of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution license, which allows the articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, if the original work is correctly cited. The authors grant the journal the right of first publication under the CC BY 4.0 License, which allows access, printing, reading, distribution, remixing, adaptation, and development of other works with acknowledgment of authorship. Authors are granted the right to enter separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work, such as publishing in an institutional repository, with proper acknowledgment of authorship and initial publication in this journal. Readers may read, download, distribute, print, search, or link to the full text of articles without prior permission from the authors or editors. |

Responsibility of the Website: The Arquivos de Gastroenterologia reserves the right to make normative orthographic changes to the originals to maintain the cultured standard of the language while respecting the authors' style. The original files will be returned to the authors. Responsibility of the Author: Authors retain full rights over their works published in the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia, with total or partial reprinting, deposit, or replication subject to indication of first publication in the journal under the CC BY 4.0 License. The opinions expressed by the authors of the articles are their sole responsibility. The journal adopts the Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 License, preserving the integrity of the articles in an open-access environment. The author is allowed to retain publication rights without restrictions. Authors of articles published by the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia retain the copyrights of their works, allowing the articles to be reused and distributed without restriction as long as the original work is correctly cited. This includes the adoption of open science practices in four dimensions of scientific communication to ensure that the quality journals it indexes follow the state of the art in scientific communication. |
Types of Articles

The Arquivos publish original and unpublished contributions (from national and international researchers) that are compatible with the journal's objectives and meet scientific and editorial standards. The manuscript submission implies that the work in its entirety or in part has not been published in another source or communication medium and that it is not under review in another journal for publication. The journal's objective is to publish studies of an original nature, clinical or surgical techniques, and epidemiological studies in the areas of Endoscopy, Surgery, Hepatology, Digestive Motility, Clinical Gastroenterology, Experimental Surgery, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Clinical Pathology of Gastroenterology, and finally, Nutrition. In addition, it publishes Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Consensus, Brief Communications, Systematic Review Articles, and E-Videos. The evaluation of the work is done impartially and anonymously, meaning any identification of the article's origin is concealed from the reviewers. At least two reviewers evaluate original articles (double-blind peer review). The estimated time for the process is 90 days from submission. The decision on acceptance for publication is made by the Editorial Board. |
Editorial Policy Regarding Narrative Reviews

The Arquivos de Gastroenterologia does not accept narrative review articles for publication. This policy reflects the journal’s commitment to scientific rigor, methodological transparency, and reproducibility of evidence synthesis. |

The authors must submit a statement file from each author describing their contributions to the article using the relevant roles from CRediT: Conceptualization; Data Curation; Formal Analysis; Funding Acquisition; Investigation; Methodology; Project Administration; Resources; Software; Supervision; Validation; Visualization; Writing - Original Draft Preparation; Writing - Review & Editing. Form and Preparation of Manuscripts
|
General Rules The texts must be in English. The number of authors is limited to six for Original Articles, and three for Brief Communications. Exceptions can be made in the case of multicenter or multidisciplinary studies. For Brief Communications, it is recommended not to exceed more than 2500 words. It may contain one figure and one table. References should not exceed 15. The submitted manuscript must be sent in Microsoft Word format and organized as follows, with these items being mandatory: A cover letter to the Chief Editor will be included, with a general presentation of the article, its importance within the context, highlights of originality, main findings, and final considerations. Moreover, this letter must include a statement of non-concurrent submission to another journal and the absence of conflicts of interest. 1. Title in English and Portuguese. For foreign authors, the translation to Portuguese will be done. The title should be simple, concise, clear, short, and impactful. Do not use more than 140 characters, including spaces.
2. Each author's participation in the study should be described in English. Contributions are, for example, data collection, research execution, text writing, statistical analysis, etc. 3. Department and Institution where the work was carried out. 4. The ORCID of all authors is mandatory. 5. Declare whether or not there is a conflict of interest, subsidy, or other financial support; sponsors should be declared. 6. Authors must inform or deny the use of Artificial Intelligence for the preparation of the text. 7. Insertion of a box containing the key points or highlights of the article in question. It should be constructed with a maximum of 4 sentences, summarizing objectives, methods, results, and conclusions. 8. Structured Abstract (Background, Objective, Methods, Results, Conclusion). The Abstract should be submitted in both English and Portuguese (200 to 600 words). Abbreviations, notes, and references should be avoided. For foreign authors, the translation to Portuguese will be done. 9. Keywords in English (3 to 10). Use terms from MEDLINE's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list whenever possible. The search can also be done on the Health Science Descriptors portal. 10. We recommend the following division within the article: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, and Acknowledgments. 11. All collaborators who are not authors may be mentioned in the Acknowledgments section. 12. References - The Arquivos de Gastroenterologia adopts the Vancouver style. Cite the references in the text using Arabic numerals in the order of citation, in parentheses. The first six authors should be cited. After the 6th author, include "et al.". 13. Tables and Figures should be cited in the text in Arabic numerals. Preferably attached to the article in JPG or PNG. They should come at the end, after the references if they are within the article. They should never be placed in the middle of the text. 14. Tables (in Microsoft Word or Excel format) - Titled "Table" only when there are numerical results. Explanations and abbreviations should be placed in table footnotes. 15. Figures – Name as "Figure" whenever it is a written questionnaire, photographs, graphs, and drawings. They must be sent in high-resolution digital format (2 MB). The figures should contain a short text about the subject. |
