ALMANACK is an academic-scientific journal aimed at an audience of specialists in the humanities, particularly History. It is dedicated to publishing original articles linked to the multiple issues in the history of the formation of national states between the 18th and 19th centuries, and it is particularly interested in the Latin American processes.

Since the 19th century, when it was exalted as the most advanced product and promoter of civilization, the State emerged as a privileged theme among those who took it upon themselves to tell the story of the new representative and constitutional regimes. The same was true for the nation that, with specific characteristics in the territories of colonial origin, appeared as fundamental in the reconstruction of the bonds of belonging of individuals to each other and of a common past. Not least, this period became known as the creation of modern nationalities and, in terms of constitutionalism, the emergence of individuals as citizens, the rule of law, the construction of rational bureaucracies, the public regulation of contracts, and the liberation of mechanisms of the market and of state controls. However, many of these issues had their roots in transformations that occurred at least a century earlier, when the Western world had experienced a crisis in its political, social, and cultural paradigms that was revealed in the conception that the heritage of the past - from then, identified with something ancient - it should be destroyed or, at the very least, reformulated.

State, nation, as well as the political entity that was formed from the convergence of these two spheres have since been the object of several controversies, ranging from their valorization as fundamental explanatory categories for the human sciences to their complete negation as outdated formulas of thinking about societies. Recently, both have been put back into question, given the profound political and social transformations that herald another crisis, that of the nation-state model, in the context of so-called globalization. A number of factors have contributed to re-discussing the attributions and character that historiography has traditionally associated with the State: the creation of new national states in Eastern Europe, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the Soviet Union, giving rise to regional autonomies and the emergence of ethnic-based national identities; the process of globalization and the constitution of supranational bodies (the European Parliament, the European Union), emptying the centrality of the State as an agent of political action and source of rights, and modifying, by partially overcoming borders, national identities; the growth of political and social mobilization movements, especially among Black people, Indigenous peoples, women, and LGBTIQPANB+ individuals, promoting the construction of collective identities based on notions such as ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation; the aggravation of social inequalities and the bankruptcy of the social welfare state, making some rights (employment, education, health) an almost privilege; finally, the redemocratization process in Latin American countries, including Brazil, emphasizing the role of civil society as a space for political action, almost in opposition to the State, and more recently, the processes of plurinational states.

It is in this context that the emergence in Brazil, in the first decade of the 21st century, of two large parallel academic initiatives - each involving researchers from different national and international universities - aimed at investigating, in the light of new analysis perspectives, the processes correlates of construction and development of the State and the nation in Brazil. The first of them was carried out by researchers gathered around the Thematic Project Formation of the State and the Nation: Brazil, c.1780-c.1850 under the direction of István Jancsó (USP, in memoriam), which had the support granted by FAPESP, between the years 2005-2009, and was headquartered at the Institute of Brazilian Studies of the University of São Paulo. Between 2005 and 2010, she produced the Revista Almanack Braziliense. Focused on the publication of studies on the history of Brazil and Portuguese America in the 18th and 19th centuries, and focusing on the process of formation of the State and the nation in Brazil in its internal dimensions as well as its interfaces with the Hispanic world and the global situation, the magazine published 11 semiannual issues, consolidating itself as an academic reference in the area. The second initiative originated within the scope of the Center for Studies of the 1800s (CEO), which has resulted in three successive projects financed by PRONEX / CNPq – FAPERJ: Nation and citizenship in the Empire: new horizons (2003-2006), Dimensions of citizenship in the 19th century (2006-2009), and Dimensions and borders of the Brazilian State in the 19th century (2009-2012); the first two under the coordination of José Murilo de Carvalho (UFRJ) and the third by Lúcia Bastos Pereira das Neves (UERJ).

The fruitful academic dialogue developed by these two projects over the years gave rise to the partnership that materialized in ALMANACK, based at the Federal University of São Paulo since 2011. The researchers involved in this endeavor are linked to several national institutions in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo - UNIFESP, USP, UFF, UNIRIO, UERJ, UFJF, UFOP, UFES, UFRJ, UFSJ, UFRRJ and PUC-RJ and more recently Pernambuco e Rio Grande do Sul - UFRPE e UFRGS. In addition to counting on the participation of researchers of foreign institutions based in Argentina, Guyana, United States, Spain and France. This is an innovative and promising interinstitutional experience, which contributed to further expanding dialogue, dissemination of work, and critical understanding of the period in question. Furthermore, in 2013, the CEO also led the creation of the Brazilian Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies (SEO - https://www.seo.org.br/), to which ALMANACK is linked as a partner. An important innovation in terms of management and academic cooperation is the agreement established among UNIFESP, PUC-Rio, UFES, and UFOP, which ensures the strong interinstitutional character of the journal.

ALMANACK seeks to condense what, despite the natural and healthy differences that characterize the researchers involved in it, represents the great convergence that links them to this common project: the intention of revisiting, from new perspectives, the theme of the formation of the Brazilian State and nation, thought of as historical constructions and as spaces for disputes, negotiations, conflicts and diverse desires, in order to entangle, as in a mosaic of projects and identities, multiple spheres or circumscriptions (political, bureaucratic, geographic, social, cultural and economic).

The journal has been part of the SciELO collection since 2016 and of the Scopus database as of 2025. It is produced using free software for the production of electronic journals (OJS), which guarantees better navigation and search conditions, in addition to reinforcing what the researchers involved in it have always been a crucial issue: the construction of a journal with completely open and free access, fundamental conditions for the journal’s sustainability.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including no financial barriers) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open Access is a condition whereby the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), permitting immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

ALMANACK is in accordance with current Open Science principles. The Unifesp Periodical Portal, where it is also located, developed by the Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research, the Unifesp Publishing House, and the Coordination of the Library Network and the Information Technology Superintendence, is also in compliance with the development of open science debate and practices, with the aim of developing and sharing, through social media, transparent and accessible knowledge (FOSTER Open Science Definition).

In this sense, ALMANACK accepts manuscripts that have been previously deposited on a non-commercial Preprints server, as long as they have not been simultaneously submitted for peer review in another journal. The responsible author must inform whether the manuscript is deposited on a Preprints server and must provide the corresponding DOI.

No submission and/or publication fees are charged for any text submitted to the Journal.

ALMANACK adopts the ethical guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), of the Code of Ethics American Educational Research Association, the Code of Good Scientific Practices – FAPESP and the Council of Science Editors (CSE) in relation to publication.

The conduct followed in relation to Bad Conduct and Sanctions is described below.

Unifesp's Periodicals Portal, within the scope of the Research Data Repositories Network launched by FAPESP, joins the integrated effort of the Rectory, Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research, the Unifesp Publishing House, the Coordination of the Libraries Network and the Information Technology Superintendence so that the science produced and published by any instance of the university is based on a data management and preservation plan. In this sense, the Periodicals Portal was born integrated with the UNIFESP Scientific Data Repository, supported by the Dataverse platform, and with the Cariniana Network, a Brazilian network of digital preservation services.

ALMANACK is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes texts that deal with its theme, be they articles, historiographical reports, texts arising from discussion, essays, and reviews, always encouraging comparative and theoretical-methodological approaches. It adopts the ethical guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Code of Ethics American Educational Research Association, the Code of Good Scientific Practices (FAPESP), and the Council of Science Editors (CSE) in relation to publication.

ALMANACK is divided into six sections: Words for Debate, Forum, Dossier, Open Articles, Research Notebooks, and Book Reviews. All articles can be submitted in Portuguese, English, French, or Spanish. The instructions for submission are below. All manuscripts submitted to ALMANACK pass through a pre-selection where their approach to the topic is evaluated in terms of relevance, clarity of writing, and concordance with the journal’s stated purpose.

The “Words for Debate” section consists of a historiographical reflection written by an invited researcher who has developed significant work on themes related to the scope of the journal.

The Forum is a section composed of three articles originating from an event organized by the journal, in which researchers are invited to present an unpublished text on a specific theme, published in the subsequent issue. As a distinguishing feature compared to other journals, the Forum is a space for discussion, open critique, and the presentation of the most up-to-date research in the field.

The Dossier is the established space in scientific journals for addressing a central theme and its ramifications, and is coordinated by two or three researchers.

The Open Articles section publishes texts submitted on a rolling basis, which undergo careful evaluation by ad hoc reviewers who are specialists in the subjects analyzed.

The Research Notebooks section includes texts by master’s and doctoral students with the aim of disseminating ongoing research, which may present partial results or historiographical assessments.

The Reviews section accepts suggestions of works whose impact is significant for the field, or invites researchers to write analytical texts about noteworthy works. In both cases, the reviewed work must have been published within the last five years.

ALMANACK adopts the double-blind peer review process, which involves two or more referees assigned to review the manuscript. The identities of the reviewers and authors are concealed from each other throughout the evaluation process. However, following the principles of Open Science, ALMANACK offers authors and reviewers the possibility of mutually revealing their identities during the evaluation process. In cases of mutual consent, the journal provides the option for direct dialogue between authors and reviewers via the journal's interface. This permission is granted upon completion of the submission and review forms.

At the end of each year, the journal publishes the names of the reviewers who participated in the evaluation process. The name of the editor responsible for the evaluation process is indicated at the end of each text.

All content of the journal, including the special sections (Dossier, Forum, Words for Debate, and Research Notebooks), is the responsibility of the editor-in-chief. The review process for articles submitted to all sections follows the process below:

Initial Review: at this stage, the Editorial Assistant evaluates whether the manuscripts comply with the rules set out in the Author's Guidelines. The manuscripts are returned to the authors if they do not meet the criteria.

Evaluation Process: manuscripts that pass the initial review are assigned two independent reviewers based on their expertise in the relevant field.

Feedback: reviewers communicate their assessments directly through the journal's OJS system. The decision can be "Accept the article," "Mandatory revisions required," "Resubmit for re-evaluation," or "Reject the submission." If the decision is to "Resubmit for re-evaluation," the manuscript must be revised by the author and resubmitted for a second round of peer review.

Approval or Rejection: based on the evaluations, the editorial board decides on the approval or rejection of the manuscript. If accepted, the manuscript proceeds to the editing process for publication.

Submissions made to the special sections go through the same stages of the review process. The editor-in-chief, together with the Editorial Board, verifies and evaluates the qualifications required of invited organizers of the special sections, supervising their activities with the journal. In the case of Dossiers, the organizers are responsible for proposing the theme, but they never take on the role of editors.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing virtual access without restriction (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Almanack does not charge submission or processing fees for texts received.

The journal Almanack follows the guidelines of the Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Communication Tools and Resources for Research from the SciELO Network. It uses Turnitin software to detect similarities with other texts in the submitted materials. All articles submitted to the magazine undergo this verification. Manuscripts that have been plagiarized will be rejected, and the Authors may be sanctioned according to the penalties determined by the Editorial Board as stipulated below.

ALMANACK adopts the Office of Research Integrity's definition of research misconduct, which includes fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in the preparation, execution, or review of research or in the reporting of research results.

Research misconduct does not include honest errors or differences of opinion. Any cases of misconduct will be addressed with the appropriate sanctions established by the Editorial Council.

• Fabrication: inventing data or results and recording or reporting them in the manuscript;
• Falsification: manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes or altering or omitting data or results in a way that the research is not accurately represented in the research record;
• Plagiarism: appropriating the ideas, processes, results, or words of another person without proper credit.

In cases of duplicate or redundant publishing practices, corrections, and retractions, ALMANACK has adopted the following recommendations:

• Duplicate or Redundant Publishing Practices: ALMANACK is committed to only publishing original material, meaning material that has not been previously published nor being considered for publishing in any other journals, even if in a different language. Articles submitted to the ALMANACK should not be submitted to any other journal while they are being evaluated. Duplicate publication refers to the practice of submitting the same study in two or more journals, and redundant publication refers to the inappropriate division of results of one study into more than one article (also known as “salami publication”). Either of these practices can result in the article’s rejection or retraction, and the authors can be subjected to the sanctions established by ALMANACK’s Editorial Board.
• Corrections and Retractions: errors or faults that do not constitute misconduct, independent of their nature or origin, will be corrected through an erratum. Previously published articles with an identified case of misconduct will be retracted, and an appropriately referenced motive for retraction will be posted. All authors will be requested to agree with the content.

Sanctions: practices that detract from scientific integrity, such as plagiarism, duplicate publications, or redundant publications, will be presented to the Editorial Board for review. The Board will decide on the appropriate sanction, including suspension from publishing in this journal for a determined length of time. Authors will be immediately informed of any developments in the sanctioning process.

Privacy Statement: the names and addresses provided in this periodical will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication and will not be made available for other purposes or to third parties.

Conflicts of interest can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. These occur when authors, reviewers, and/or editors have interests that may influence manuscripts' creation and/or evaluation. At the time of submitting an article, the author must acknowledge and declare any financial or other conflict of interest that may have influenced their work. In cases where there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author must report it in a document signed in their own hand and attach it on the OJS platform of the journal. ALMANACK supports the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER as well as the set of DEIA Principles (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility). We follow a policy of gender and racial equity in the formation of the editorial board, as well as in proposing contributions to the Journal in all its sections, and we are attentive to the implementation of policies regarding inclusion and accessibility.

ALMANACK recommends that authors submit their research to the Ethics Committees of their institutions, which are responsible for approving compliance with its guidelines according to each area of ​​knowledge.

Almanack continuously receives article proposals submitted exclusively through its website. Submissions must be original and contain a maximum of 11,000 words, including the title, abstract, keywords, and footnotes, set in Times New Roman, size 12 font. Files must not exceed 2MB. These rules apply equally to texts for the Forum section.

Regarding the other sections of the Journal, the following rules apply:

Dossiers

A Almanack annually selects three thematic dossiers, through spontaneous submission or by invitation from the editorial board. Proposals are received until the month of March each year and evaluated by the Editorial Board and the Editorial Council. The result of the selection is released by the month of May each year.
Proposals must be sent to the email: almanack@unifesp.br

Formatting of proposals

Proposals may be submitted by 2 or 3 organizers, and it is suggested that at least one researcher be affiliated with an educational and/or research institution based outside Brazil. They must include the following information:

• Name and institutional affiliation of the organizers;
• Title of the dossier (maximum of 7 words);
• Contextualization of the dossier’s theme, indicating the debates, objects, and fields of investigation to which it is connected;
• Justification presenting the academic relevance of the proposal, as well as its dialogue with the thematic scope of Almanack;
• List of up to six authors invited to submit texts (there is no need to include article abstracts).

Criteria for evaluating proposals:

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Correct formatting and compliance with formal requirements;
• Presence of at least one organizer affiliated with a foreign institution;
• Regional, gender, and racial diversity among the organizers and the proposed texts;
• Novelty and originality of the theme in relation to dossiers already published by the journal;
• Thematic adequacy to the editorial scope of Almanack;
• Clarity, internal coherence, and academic relevance of the proposal;
• Inclusion of contributions in languages other than Portuguese.

Responsibilities of organizers of approved dossiers

Organizers of selected dossiers must:

• Promote broad dissemination of the dossier with the support of the journal’s editorial office;
• Invite researchers to submit articles;
• Write an introductory/review article on the theme of the dossier, in which the central issue must be problematized and situated within the historiographical debate;
• Recommend peer reviewers for the articles received;
• Ensure submission of texts from invited authors by May 1.

Evaluation and publication of dossier articles

Only submissions in the form of original or review articles will be accepted. All articles will undergo double-blind peer review, following the same criteria and procedures applied to articles in the open section. Dossier organizers will not have access to the evaluation process, which will be conducted exclusively by the Editorial Board.

The final decision regarding the publication of articles, as well as their suitability to the journal’s editorial agenda, rests with the Editorial Board, which is also responsible for deliberating on eventual omissions.
Dossiers that do not have articles submitted by May 1 will not be implemented, nor will those that do not gather at least four approved articles. In both cases, any approved articles may, with the authors’ permission, be published in the journal’s open articles section.

Almanack Research Note

Almanack publishes texts by master’s and doctoral students with the aim of disseminating ongoing research.

Limited to nine annual texts of up to six thousand words each, the texts in this section will undergo double-blind review, and their content may vary between the presentation of partial results and historiographical assessments. In dialogue with student representative bodies, Almanack annually defines themes for this section, whose composition must respect the regional, racial, and gender diversity guidelines established by the journal. In partnership with the Digital Networks team, this section invites authors to produce videos on research methodologies.

Reviews

Reviews must follow the following characteristics:

• Contain between 1,500 (minimum) and 2,200 (maximum) words;
• Have a title different from the title of the reviewed work;
• Summarize the central ideas of the work;
• Present the methodological perspective and, when appropriate, the theoretical premises adopted by the author to develop the book’s central ideas;
• Position the work within its academic field, mentioning, when possible, its main authors and critics;
• Provide a critical evaluation of the three points above;
• Present the bibliography at the end of the text.

ALMANACK recommends that authorship be based on the following criteria:

• Substantial contribution to the study's conception.
• Data analysis or interpretation for the work.
• Drafting of part of the work or critical review of its intellectual content for the version to be published.

All contributors who do not meet the authorship criteria should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments section, as well as the financial support from funding agencies.

The manuscript should be submitted in a Microsoft Office Word file, which should contain a maximum of 11,000 words, including the title, abstract, keywords, and footnotes, in Times New Roman font, size 12. The files should not exceed 2 MB.

To facilitate the evaluation process, ALMANACK recommends that authors submit their manuscripts in separate files as follows:

1. A file with:

• Title: The title should be clear and concise. For titles in Portuguese, French, and Spanish, it is mandatory to provide the title in English as well;
• Authorship: Authors should have a BA or equivalente degree, except for reviews. They should provide their full name, institutional affiliation (University/Department, City, Country), email, and ORCID – all authors should be registered with ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). In manuscripts with multiple authors, each author should indicate their respective ORCID;
• Funding: All sources of research funding should be mentioned. Indicate the institutional responsibility and project number. The role of funding agencies in conducting the study, analysis, and manuscript writing should be declared in the acknowledgments;
• Acknowledgments: Contributors who do not meet the authorship criteria should be included in the acknowledgments section;
• Abstract: The abstract should briefly present the manuscript, not exceeding 250 words. Quotations should not be included in the abstract. Abstracts in Portuguese, French, and Spanish should be accompanied by an English version;
• Keywords: Include three to six keywords separated by commas in English and the manuscript's language. Search for keywords in the controlled vocabulary of SIBI/USP is recommended.

2. Another file with the text followed by the bibliography cited in footnotes.
3. Other file(s) for each image or graphics used.

Authorship should be removed from Word properties. To do this, open the text in Word, click on the "File" menu, and select "Info." Then click on "Properties," choose "Advanced Properties," click on "Summary," and delete the content of the "Author" field. If the Author agrees to reveal his/her identity, as well as the original being available in a Preprint repository, this action is unnecessary.

At the time of submission, the authors choose whether they wish to consent to disclose their identity. In this case, the previous action to remove authorship is unnecessary.

When submitting, authors are requested to:

• Express their agreement with the Open Science protocols adopted by ALMANACK;
• Indicate whether they allow their identity to be revealed to reviewers;
• Must indicate, in the case of 2 or more authors, that each author participated sufficiently in the work to assume responsibility for a significant portion of the content.

ALMANACK employs a system of footnotes for citations. In this system, all references (author, year, page) for books, articles, theses, or similar sources should be indicated as footnotes in a simplified manner. For example: Carvalho, 1980, p. 36. Only at the end, in the bibliography, should the complete references of the works actually cited in the text be provided.

The references mentioned in the manuscript should be numbered in Arabic numerals corresponding to the information cited in the footnotes.

• Images: Images, along with their complete captions (including authorship and the holding institution's reference), should be numbered using Greek letters. They should indicate their position in the body of the text and be submitted as separate files, as supplementary documents (step 4 of the electronic submission system). Only images in TIFF or JPEG format with a resolution of 300 dpi will be accepted.
• ALMANACK does not take responsibility for obtaining image copyrights.
• Charts, Figures, and Tables: Tables and figures should be numbered in the order of their appearance in the text. They should include a title and be provided in separate files. They should have an open background and be entirely white.

For final bibliography citations, you should follow the following pattern: ABNT NBR – 6023.

Before the publication of accepted articles, corresponding authors will receive the referee reports and must adjust the text according to the suggestions received. Afterward, they will send the revised article to the journal, highlighting the changes made in yellow. Once the modifications have been verified, the article will be prepared for publication. Before that, the author will receive the revised text in a Word file. Corrections or changes that the author requests at this stage should be limited to typographical errors; the content or authorship cannot be altered.
