Basic information

 

Evaluation: Journal of higher education evaluation, a joint publication of the institutions University Estadual in Campinas and University  in Sorocaba, aims to contribute to the development of studies and research on higher education, in particular on institutional evaluation of higher education and related topics with trends and policies in higher education, science and technology. Its policy is to catalyze and disseminate academic work that is produced mainly in university circles and that contribute to the development of theories and practices of institutional evaluation and general debates on higher education in Brazil and in other Ibero-American countries. Articles are published in the original language of their respective authors, preferably in Portuguese, Spanish and English. It is aimed especially at the university public: professors and students, mainly post-graduate in education and neighboring areas; it is also of interest to those responsible for higher education public policies. In addition to academic articles, it also publishes reviews and documents, when this is interesting to the area of expertise. The articles are submitted to the opinions of members of the Editorial Committee or ad hoc reviewers.

Scope and policy

 

Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior aims to contribute to the development of studies and research on higher education, particularly on institutional evaluation of higher education and issues related to perspectives and trends in higher education and higher education and science and technology policies. It aims to catalyze and disseminate scholarly works, which are mainly produced in academic settings and contribute to the development of institutional evaluation theories and practices and general debates about higher education in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Papers are published in the original language of the author, preferably in Portuguese, Spanish or English. The journal is oriented to teachers and students, particularly graduate education and neighboring areas and it is also of interest to policy makers connected to higher education. In addition to scholarly articles the journal also publishes reviews and documents pertinent to its themes of interest . Papers are submitted to the evaluation of members of the Editorial Board or ad hoc reviewers.

Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior publishes papers - not published in books, magazines or other journals - with substantive contributions on issues relevant to its central theme. Review essays will only be published when it is in the interest of the Editorial Board. The reviews should be unpublished comments on recently published books (not more than 24 months), which have relevance of the reviewed work to the field of social sciences in general and adhere to the Journal's editorial policy. The Journal accepts submission of articles and reviews in Portuguese, Spanish and English, which will be published in their original language.

Descriptive articles lacking a guiding question, projects or research reports, dissertation chapters, experience reports, previously published articles, either in hard copy or in digital formats, will not be accepted for publication.

Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) highlights that the statements and concepts issued in articles published by the journal are the absolute responsibility of their authors, not expressing the opinion of the members of the Editorial Board.

There is no fee for article submission.

Guidelines for Good Practice in Academic Publications

When submitting an article for publication in the Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas), authors must declare that all ethical guidelines concerning the integrity of the scientific activities carried out during the research were respected. The procedure and approval by the Ethics Committee of your Institution, when applicable to the research, and possible sources of funding must also be mentioned. The observance of good ethical practices in research is the sole responsibility of the author.

Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) supports and guides its authors and referees regarding the promotion of ethics in research and scientific communication, based on the principles of SciELO's Codes of Ethics, presented in the “Guide to Good Practices for the Strengthening of Ethics in Scientific Publication”; in the “Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Academic Publications” recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (Publications Ethics Committee [COPE]); in the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (Association of Academic Publishers of Open Access [OASPA]) and in the manual of good practices from the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation .

Regarding authorship, the Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) asks that all authors be identified and that their participation and contribution to the conception, development and analysis of the data presented are pointed out. It is worth mentioning that it is the authors’ responsibility to identify and include all co-authors who effectively collaborated in the writing of the article. All authors must be proven to accept responsibility for the content of the article, in addition to registering their respective contributions at the end of the manuscript, in case of acceptance for publication. If authors find that there was some type of relevant error after the publication of the article, they must immediately inform the editors, so that an erratum may be published.

In relation to the identification of misconduct, related to practices such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism and republication of articles, as well as data falsification, Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) informs that it uses plagiarism and self-plagiarism detection tools. However, if there is a failure in the process of detecting misconduct, and the article has already been published, the author and his co-authors become subject to editorial sanctions, such as retraction of scientific articles.

Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) has been progressively aligning itself with open science practices by adopting the CC-BY (Creative Commons Attribution) license, providing access to databases, codes and other materials used in researching published articles , and accept articles previously deposited on preprint server as: Scielo.

When submitting the manuscript, corresponding authors must complete and attach the “Open Science Compliance Form” as a supplementary file, which must be downloaded, completed and included as a supplementary file during the submission. Through it, the authors declare they agree to Open Science practices.

 

Evaluation and publication criteria

Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) follows strict merit criteria for publishing papers. The evaluation process is the same for all submitted articles. After submission, papers are submitted to the Editorial Board and evaluated for their adequacy to the journal's objectives and scope, which takes about thirty days. After that, selected papers are submitted to a second round of evaluation, in which their conformity to publication norms (ABNT) are checked. If there are structural problems with the paper, authors are invited to submit modified versions of the text.

Lastly, the third stage consists of evaluation through a double blind peer review system, which may take up to five months, depending on the influx of submissions.

Publication follows the order of received submissions, but exceptions may occur at the Board's discretion.

Decisions about the publication of articles are the responsibility of the journal's editors, based on the review of peer reviewers.

 

Manuscript Submission Rules

Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) operates exclusively by an online submission system (SciELO), which uses the Open Journal System as support management for scientific journals. The whole process of submission and arbitration of papers will go through this electronic platform. Submissions must be made online at:

http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/aval

Authors should register with the Scielo system and submit their work for consideration. Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) reinforces that, at the time of paper submission, all authors should be included in the metadata. After paper submission, no author may be inserted.

Furthermore, Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) reinforces that the authors carefully review the items and see if they are appropriate to the journal's formatting requirements and ABNT.

The publication on Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas) is subject to the anonymous review process by experts (double-blind review). In order to guarantee anonymity in the evaluation process, the name of the author(s) must NOT appear in the body of the text, as well as any other references that allow their identification.

The authors shall send, in a separated file, along with the main text, the following information:

  • Personal and academic data (institution, job position, academic title, telephone number and e-mail) of all authors.
 

 

Forms and preparation of manuscripts

 

Articles must have between 25,000 and 40,000 characters with spaces, including abstracts, notes and bibliographic references, except in exceptional cases at the editors' discretion. They must be typed on standard A4 word paper with 2.5 left and right margins, font Times New Roman, size 12, with 1.5 spacing between lines. All the originals papers submitted for publication must have a title, abstract and keywords in Portuguese, Spanish and English.

The abstract must describe the research question and goals of the article, the methodological approach used, and the findings, as well as the implications and originality of the study.  The title of the article must have a maximum of 20 words, and be presented in three languages, as well as the five keywords that identify its content.

Authors cited must appear in the text and should be referred to as follows: (AUTHOR'S LAST NAME, year) or (AUTHOR'S LAST NAME, year, page number). E.g.: Ex.: (DIAS SOBRINHO, 2015) ou (SILVA, 2020, p. 32). Different titles by the same author published during the same year should be identified by a letter after the date. E.g.: (SILVA, 2015a), (SILVA, 2015b). In case there are two publications by the same author, the citation must be like this: (DIAS SOBRINHO, 2009, 2015). In case the author is cited as part of the text, cite as follows: Author's surname (Year). Ex. As expressed by Basbaum (1978), philosophy makes sense [...]. Or as follows: Author's surname (Year, page), when directly quoted in quotation marks. 

The bibliography that is used must be presented at the end of the article, with authors listed in alphabetical order and in accordance with the ABNT norms (NBR 6023). Note not only the order of the elements, but also to the kinds of sources and the punctuation conventions used in each citation. In references with more than three authors, mention only the first author, followed by the expression “et al.”. The accuracy of the references contained in the listing and the correct citation of their data in the text are the responsibility of the author of the work. Attention is required not only to the order of the elements but also to their font types and scores.

The originals must be submitted in .doc or .docx (Word for Windows), Open Office or .rtf, in A4 format, with the following characteristics:

Title and subtitle of the article: Times New Roman 14 font, centralized, bold, with a maximum of 20 words, representing the content of the article. Title and subtitle must also be presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish and must be in bold italics.

Abstract and keywords: Except for reviews and interviews, the texts must present an abstract of up to eight hundred characters with spaces, and a maximum of five keywords that allow the identification of the article content, separated by periods. Use Times New Roman 12 font, no indent. Abstract and keywords must also be presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish (the Spanish version may be replaced by the French version in cases where the article was originally written in that language).

Text: font Times New Roman 12, paragraphs without indent, spacing between lines of 1.5 and margin of 2.5 cm.

Tables and graphs: must be in the body of the text, presented in accordance with the norms of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). They must be identified with their title (obligatory) and caption (if applicable). Tables must always be in editable format and never in image.

Images, figures and photographs: must be inserted at the end of the article file itself, with minimum resolution of 300 DPI, minimum width of 1,200 pixels, JPG, PNG, PDF or EPS format. The images, pictures and photographs will be published with a maximum width of 100 mm.

Notes: if present, they should be numbered sequentially and placed at the end of text and before the references (endnotes). The use of bibliographic notes is not allowed. Instead, citations should be used in the text according to NBR 10.520/2002 from Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). References in the text should be cited indicating the name(s) of the author(s), year of publication, and page number(s): (SILVA, 2020, p. 225). In case of more than one author, the names should be separated with a semicolon (NUNES; SILVA, 2021, p. 122).

Bibliographical references: must follow the NBR-6023/2002 from ABNT, and must be ordered alphabetically by the surname of the first author. In the references of up to three authors, all author names may be mentioned, separated by semicolons. However, in those with more than three authors, only the first author name should be mentioned followed by et al. The accuracy of the references in the listing and the correct citation of their content in the paper are the responsibility of the author(s).

The use of italic resource in the text body shall be utilized only for foreign words. To present the elements that constitute the article one shall use the current ABNT norms.

Submitting a paper, the authors undertake not to send it to another journal during the evaluation process.

Sending any contribution automatically implies full assignment of copyright to the Avaliação: Revista da Avaliação da Educação Superior (Campinas).
