ABOUT THE JOURNAL

 

Brief History

 

The Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas (BMPEG. Human Sciences) is the successor to the Boletim do Museu Paraense de História Natural e Etnographia, founded by Emílio Goeldi in 1894. The journal’s mission is to publish original works in the fields of Anthropology, Archaeology, Indigenous Linguistics, and related disciplines. It accepts contributions in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French for the following sections: scientific articles, review articles, research notes, memoirs, book reviews, theses, and dissertations. The journal is published triannually (April, August, and December). Since 2016, the Boletim has been available exclusively in electronic format.

 

 

Open Access

 

All content published in the journal is licensed under a  Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0). Under this license, authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication. After initial publication in the journal, authors may enter into additional, non-exclusive agreements for the distribution of the published version of the work, such as depositing it in an institutional repository or publishing it as a book chapter, provided that proper authorship credit is given and the original publication in this journal is acknowledged. The journal adheres to the principles of the Open Access Movement by making all its content freely and openly available online.

Publication Ethics

 

The journal follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), as well as the Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing (2018). It also adheres to the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) to ensure the integrity of the results published by the journal.

Plagiarism is considered an editorial offense and constitutes unacceptable conduct for the journal.

BMPEG. Human Sciences is committed to publishing original works in archaeology, history, anthropology, Indigenous linguistics, and related disciplines. The journal also seeks to promote diversity with regard to gender and ethnic equity, as well as geographic representation.

EDITORIAL POLICY

 

Preprints

 

BMPEG. Human Sciences accepts the submission of manuscripts that have been previously deposited as preprints. The journal even encourages authors to deposit their submissions in the SciELO Preprints repository (https://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo), provided that there is no simultaneous submission to another journal. It is important to note that the originality of the publication is preserved, and that the journal’s editorial review process does not follow a double-anonymized procedure, since the authorship of the manuscript becomes public once it is published as a preprint. If the article is accepted for publication, authors must update the records in the preprint server by including the complete reference of the published version.

 

 

Peer Review Process

 

The journal has a Scientific Advisory Board. Submitted manuscripts are initially evaluated by the Scientific Editor or one of the Associate Editors. The Editor reserves the right to suggest changes to the manuscripts or to return them if they do not meet the criteria required for publication.

Once accepted for review, articles undergo a peer review process. Each article is evaluated by at least two specialists who are not members of the Editorial Board and who issue independent reports. In cases of conflicting reviews, the manuscript is submitted to one or more additional reviewers. If revisions or corrections are recommended, the manuscript is returned to the author(s), who will have 30 days to submit a revised version. In accordance with the principles of ethnic, gender, and geographic equity, the journal is committed to fostering diversity among expert reviewers, while ensuring the required levels of expertise and academic qualification.

After receiving the anonymous reviews, the Editor makes the final decision regarding the acceptance of the article for publication. If accepted, the author(s) are invited to revise the manuscript based on the reviewers’ reports and the Editor’s comments.

In cases where the submission has been deposited in SciELO Preprints, the evaluation process will not follow the double-anonymized procedure, as the authorship is publicly disclosed.

Once approved, manuscripts are published in order of submission. The Scientific Editor may also determine the most appropriate time for publication. The name of the editor responsible for the review is published in the final version of the article.

An author may only submit a new contribution after a period of 12 months from the date of the previous submission.

 

 

Open Data

 

After article approval, authors are encouraged to deposit the research data associated with their work in the journal’s interface on the SciELO Data repository (https://data.scielo.org/dataverse/brbgoeldi). This recommendation applies only to cases that do not involve ethical or legal restrictions. For more information on data deposit in the SciELO Data repository, please refer to: https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Guia_deposito_pt.pdf.

Research data are scientific records generated throughout the investigative process and are essential for validating the results obtained. Examples include research projects, reports submitted to funding agencies, descriptions of collections used, tables, charts, and statistical information not included in the article, as well as recordings or transcripts of oral interviews. All research data cited in the manuscript and already publicly available must be properly referenced and listed in the references section (for information on how to cite these documents, see: https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/guia-de-citacao-de-dados_pt.pdf).

Authors are required to sign the Open Science Compliance Form, which must be submitted along with the pre-publication version of the article. In cases where data are deposited in other repositories, authors must inform the journal of the corresponding link at this stage through the declaration form. Article Processing Charges

 

This is an open access journal, meaning that all content is freely available at no cost to users or institutions. No fees are charged for manuscript submission or publication.

 

 

Policy on Ethics and Misconduct, Errata, and Retraction

 

The journal follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), as well as the Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing (2018). It also adheres to the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) to ensure the integrity of the results published by the journal.

Research involving human subjects must comply with CNS Resolution No. 466/2012<https://conselho.saude.gov.br/resolucoes/2012/Reso466.pdf>. For submissions resulting from research involving human groups, it is the responsibility of the author(s) to submit, at the time of manuscript submission, the informed consent form, the document related to the study’s registration with a Research Ethics Committee involving human subjects. It is also recommended that authors indicate in the manuscript that the research was approved by an Ethics Committee recognized by the National Research Ethics Commission of the National Health Council (CONEP-CNS).

When necessary, corrections and retractions are published in accordance with the procedures recommended in the Retraction Guidelines issued by COPE, available at: https://publicationethics.org/files/cope-retraction-guidelines-v2.pdf. To initiate this process, authors and readers must submit a request to the email address boletim.humanas@museu-goeldi.br. The request will be evaluated by the journal’s editorial team.

Errata may be published in cases deemed appropriate by the editors, following the criteria established by the SciELO Collection. In this regard, it is recommended to consult the SciELO Guide for the Publication of Errata, which outlines the editorial procedures for making formal corrections to already published articles.

Likewise, in cases of retraction, the editors follow the criteria established by SciELO in the SciELO Retraction Guide.

 

 

Policy on Conflict of Interest

 

In cases of potential conflicts of interest or other relevant matters the author deems important, this information should be disclosed to the Editor at the time of manuscript submission, in the “Conflict of Interest” field on the ScholarOne platform. Editors and invited reviewers must also decline to participate in the evaluation process of manuscripts in which they identify a conflict of interest. The journal follows the guidelines proposed by COPE to guide decisions in such cases (https://publicationethics.org/guidance/Flowcharts).

 

 

Use of Similarity Detection Software

 

BMPEG. Human Sciences uses Crossref’s similarity detection software to identify potential cases of plagiarism. All submitted manuscripts undergo this verification. Manuscripts showing a similarity index higher than 50% in comparison to other publications will be automatically rejected. In cases where the similarity percentage is lower but there are passages lacking proper citation or authorship attribution, the submission may be returned to the authors for correction or rejected, depending on the severity and extent of the content in question. Each case is evaluated individually by the editors, in accordance with the journal’s ethical guidelines.

 

 

Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

 

BMPEG. Human Sciences advises authors and reviewers to consult the Guide for the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools and Resources (https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Guia-de-uso-de-ferramentas-e-recursos-de-IA-20230914.pdf) whenever AI tools or AI-generated content are used in manuscripts, with particular attention to the following principles outlined in the guide:

  • Disclose/mention the sources of materials used in the research and in the writing of the article or chapter. Any and all use of, or content generated by, an AI application must be disclosed in the abstract and in the methods section or its equivalent;
  • Ensure that all cited material is properly attributed, including full citations, and verify that the sources cited support the claims made by the AI application, as it is not uncommon for such tools to generate references to non-existent works;
  • Assume public responsibility for one’s work;
  • Concealing the use of AI tools or content constitutes an ethical violation that breaches the principles of transparency and honesty in research.
 

 

Sex and Gender Issues

 

BMPEG. Human Sciences is committed to publishing original works in archaeology, history, anthropology, Indigenous linguistics, and related disciplines, as well as to promoting diversity in terms of gender and ethnic equity and geographic representation. The journal encourages the submission of articles that reflect diversity in authorship. During the evaluation process, the Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Human Sciences is committed to fostering diversity of expert opinion, while fully respecting the required standards of expertise and academic qualification. The journal also adopts the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) Guidelines and encourages authors to consider, whenever appropriate, the dimensions of sex and gender in their studies, and to present this information clearly in the manuscripts submitted.

 

 

Ethics Committee

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

Types of Documents Accepted

 

The journal publishes original works in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French in the following categories:

Scientific Articles– original analytical texts resulting from research that contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge. Length: 15 to 30 pages.
Review Articles – original analytical or essay-style texts that present a bibliographic or theoretical review of a specific subject or theme. Length: 15 to 30 pages.
Research Notes – shorter preliminary reports than full articles, addressing field observations, research challenges and progress, with emphasis on hypotheses, commentary on sources, partial results, methods, and techniques used. Maximum length: 15 pages.
Memoir – section dedicated to the dissemination of collections or their components that are relevant to scientific research; includes partially or fully transcribed documents accompanied by an introductory text; and biographical essays, including obituaries or personal recollections. Maximum length: 20 pages.
Debate – critical essays on current topics. Maximum length: 15 pages.
Book Reviews – descriptive and/or critical analysis of works published in print or digital formats. Maximum length: 5 pages.
Theses and Dissertations – concise descriptions, without bibliography, of master’s dissertations, doctoral theses, and habilitation theses. Length: 1 page. The Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Human Sciences publishes summaries of theses and dissertations but does not publish thesis or dissertation chapters. Recognizing the need and academic interest in disseminating postgraduate research results, authors are encouraged to produce scientific articles based on these studies, written in a format distinct from the original text, highlighting key findings, and using direct citations where appropriate. This guidance also applies to monographs in general, as well as undergraduate final projects. The journal does not accept expanded abstracts, texts in the form of reports, or works previously published in any publicly accessible medium.
Interview- interviews with researchers, thinkers, or cultural agents whose trajectories and reflections make a significant contribution to the field of the Human Sciences. Interviews should address current or historical topics with critical depth, fostering the exchange of ideas and experiences. Maximum length: 5 pages.
Photographic Essay – visual productions that engage with themes, practices, and issues within the Human Sciences. Essays should present a coherent aesthetic and conceptual proposal, accompanied by an introductory text that contextualizes the images and explains their relevance to academic or sociocultural discussions. Up to 15 images, with brief captions and an introductory text (maximum 5 page).

BMPEG. Human Sciences recommends that submissions be deposited in SciELO Preprints (https://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo); however, simultaneous submission to another journal is not permitted. Submissions share with journals the requirement of originality, and the review process will not follow the double-anonymized procedure, as authorship becomes publicly known once the work is published in the Preprints category. Contributions will undergo peer review, and if accepted, authors must update the records in the Preprint server and provide the full reference of the published version.

 

 

Authors' Contribution

 

At the time of submission, authors must indicate the specific contributions of each coauthor, following the CRediT taxonomy: (1) project administration; (2) formal analysis; (3) funding acquisition; (4) conceptualization; (5) data curation; (6) writing – original draft; (7) writing – review and editing; (8) investigation; (9) methodology; (10) resources; (11) software; (12) supervision; (13) validation; and (14) visualization. This information is published on the last page of the article.

 

 

Manuscript Preparation

 

BMPEG. Human Sciences accepts contributions exclusively in digital format. Article files must be submitted online through the ScholarOne platform via the journal’s website at http://editora.museu-goeldi.br/humanas or directly through the link https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/bgoeldi-scielo, with all required information provided as prompted by the platform. Before submitting their work, authors must ensure that all journal guidelines have been followed, as this is a prerequisite for initiating the editorial process. The journal does not accept simultaneous submissions by an author or coauthor. A 12-month interval must be observed before submitting a new contribution.

 

 

Article Submission Format

 

All submissions must be made through the online submission platform ScholarOne. Manuscripts must be submitted:
1. in Word format, using Times New Roman font, size 12, 1.5 line spacing, and consecutively numbered pages. Manuscripts in Indigenous linguistics must use a font compatible with the Unicode standard, such as Arial, Calibri, Cambria, Déjà Vu, Tahoma, or other fonts that include all phonetic symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Times New Roman is preferred, but it includes Unicode IPA symbols only in the most recent Windows versions. IPA symbols should never be improvised using standard letters with strikethrough formatting (e.g., to imitate ɨ, ʉ, etc.

2. The first page must include:
a. Title: In the language of the manuscript and in English (if different from the manuscript language). It should be written in lowercase, bold, and centered on the page.
b. Summary: Text in a single paragraph, using the active voice and third-person singular verb, highlighting the objectives, methods, results, and conclusions of the study, with a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 200 words.
c. Abstract: Text in a single paragraph, using the active voice and third-person singular verb, highlighting the objectives, methods, results, and conclusions of the study, with a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 200 words, in English (Abstract). The English version should be written or revised by a native speaker (preferably a colleague in the field), which is the responsibility of the author(s).
d. Keywords: Three to six words that identify the main topics of the work, for indexing purposes in database.

2.1. Mandatory information for submission metadata:
In addition to the elements above, authors must provide the following information at the time of submission:

  • Authors’ names (when surnames are compound, create a clear identification using uppercase, bold, and/or hyphenation). Metadata, including the title, abstract, and keywords, must obligatorily have an English version when the manuscript language is different from English;
  • Authors with complete affiliations;
  • Authors’ ORCID iDs;
  • Contact author’s email address;
  • Information about article funding;
  • DOI registration.

3. Manuscripts must not include the author(s)’ name(s) or acknowledgments.

 

 

Digital Assets

 

Tables must be created in Word, numbered sequentially, and accompanied by clear captions. All figures (illustrations, charts, images, diagrams, etc.) must be submitted separately on the online platform, with their respective captions, numbered sequentially. They must have a minimum resolution of 300 DPI and a minimum size of 1,500 pixels, in JPEG or TIFF format, preferably respecting the page layout proportions of the Boletim, within the limits of 16.5 cm width by 20 cm height (for two-column use) or 8 cm width by 20 cm height (for single-column use). Any text included in the figures must be in Arial font, sized between 7 and 10 points. Figures created in vector-based programs should preferably be submitted in editable formats with the following extensions: .cdr (version X5 or earlier), .eps, or .ai (CS5 or earlier). The article text must obligatorily refer to all tables, charts, and illustrations.

 

 

Citations and References

 

Articles must follow the recommendations of the APA 7th Edition Citation Guide for the use and presentation of citations and references. References should be listed at the end of the manuscript in alphabetical order according to the surname of the first author. In cases where multiple references by the same author are cited, they should be ordered chronologically from the oldest to the most recent. In-text citations and references to authors must follow the format: author’s surname (not in uppercase), year: page(s). Examples: (Goeldi, 1897, p. 10); Goeldi (1897, p. 10). Authors are responsible for correctly applying the rules for preparing references and for the proper use of the new Portuguese language orthographic rules in articles and other documents submitted to the journal.
