Brief Background
BioSCIENCE is a continuation of the title Medical Journal of Paraná, a scientific journal linked to the Associação Médica do Paraná in Curitiba, PR. In 2022, when the journal completed 80 years of uninterrupted circulation, it underwent a process of editorial modernization, adopting the title BioSCIENCE, maintaining its historical tradition and its commitment to scientific dissemination in the health area. From volume 80 onwards, the journal began publishing peer-reviewed articles in a continuous flow, expanding its visibility and adapting to contemporary standards of scholarly communication. In 2024, it started to adopt bilingual publishing in Portuguese and English. BioSCIENCE is an open access electronic journal, intended for the dissemination of research, reviews, reports and other scientific contributions of interest to clinicians, surgeons, researchers in medical sciences, related areas and biomedicine. |
Open Access
BioSCIENCE follows the Open Access model, providing unrestricted virtual access, including without financial restriction, to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights of use to third parties through the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY 4.0) open license, allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, track it for indexing, pass it as data to software, or use it for any other lawful purpose, provided that the original authorship and publication are properly cited. |

BioSCIENCE follows the Gold Open Access model, making its content fully available in open and immediate access, with no charge for reading, downloading, or sharing the published articles. Ethics in Publication
BioSCIENCE is committed to the principles of scientific integrity, editorial transparency, authorial responsibility and ethics in scholarly communication. The journal adopts good editorial practices aimed at preventing, identifying, and treating misconduct in research and publication, including plagiarism, self-plagiarism, redundant or duplicate publication, fabrication or falsification of data, inappropriate manipulation of images, manipulation of citations, omission of conflicts of interest, improper authorship, ghost authorship, manipulation of the peer review process, and absence of ethical approval when applicable. Submitted manuscripts must comply with national and international ethical principles applicable to scientific research. Studies involving human beings must be previously approved by a duly recognized Research Ethics Committee (REC), when applicable. Research involving animals must be approved by the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals (CEUA), according to current legislation. BioSCIENCE supports and adopts the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), the SciELO Network, the EQUATOR Network and other internationally recognized good practices for scientific publication. Suspected cases of scientific misconduct, before or after publication, will be analyzed by the editorial team, under the responsibility of the editor-in-chief, ensuring adequate investigation, confidentiality, right of reply to those involved and, when necessary, communication to the institutions of origin, ethics committees, funding agencies or other competent bodies. Depending on the nature and severity of the occurrence, editorial measures may include requesting clarification from the authors, rejection of the manuscript, correction, errata, addendum, editorial statement, expression of concern or retraction, preserving transparency, traceability of the scientific record and the credibility of the published literature. |

BioSCIENCE is a peer-reviewed scientific journal dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge in the area of Health Sciences. Its focus is the publication of original scientific papers, literature reviews, case reports, brief communications, editorials, and other manuscripts of academic and professional interest that contribute to the advancement of health research, teaching, and practice. The journal aims to promote scientific debate and the dissemination of relevant knowledge for physicians, surgeons, health professionals, researchers, professors, students and other interested parties in the medical, biomedical and related areas. The selection of manuscripts considers criteria of originality, scientific relevance, methodological quality, contribution to the area of knowledge and interest to the national and international scientific community. |

Preprints
BioSCIENCE accepts the submission of manuscripts previously deposited in public servers of preprints recognized by the editorial board, such as SciELO Preprints. A preprint is a preliminary version of the manuscript made publicly available before or in parallel with submission to a journal, without formal review by an editor and reviewers. The prior availability of the manuscript on a preprint server does not characterize prior publication and does not prevent its submission to the journal. Manuscripts previously deposited on preprint servers follow the same editorial flow applied to other manuscripts submitted to BioSCIENCE, including technical review, editorial screening, similarity check, peer review, and final editorial decision. When considering manuscripts from preprint servers, BioSCIENCE observes criteria of server reliability, transparency of editorial policy, identification by DOI when available, possibility of versioning, registration of comments or endorsements from researchers, and interoperability with other platforms. BioSCIENCE follows the recommendations for openness, transparency, and reproducibility of research, including the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) guidelines. |
Peer Review Process
The editorial flow of the journal BioSCIENCE begins with the receipt of the manuscript by the technical team, responsible for the preliminary verification of the mandatory documents and for the technical and formal pre-analysis of the submission. After this initial conference, the manuscript is submitted to editorial screening, under the supervision of the editor-in-chief, who evaluates its originality, thematic relevance, academic consistency, methodological adequacy, and contribution to the area of knowledge. Manuscripts approved in the screening are assigned to an associate editor, chosen according to thematic specialty, experience in the area and the absence of conflicts of interest. It is up to this editor to conduct the peer review process, select ad hoc reviewers and/or members of the editorial board with qualifications compatible with the theme of the manuscript. BioSCIENCE adopts the double-blind peer review model, ensuring the anonymity of authors and reviewers during the evaluation process. In general, two evaluators with expertise in the topic are invited. When there is substantial divergence between the reviews, the manuscript may be submitted to the appreciation of a third evaluator. The final editorial decision rests with the editor-in-chief, based on the critical analysis of the process, the opinions received and the recommendation of the associate editor. As a practice of opening the editorial process, the articles published by BioSCIENCE inform the Editor Responsible for the Evaluation Process. During the evaluation, the journal maintains the double-blind peer review model, preserving the anonymity of authors and reviewers. When applicable and with the agreement of the parties involved, BioSCIENCE may adopt additional practices of openness, such as the possibility of dialogue between authors and reviewers, with editorial mediation, and the publication of approval reports, with or without identification of the reviewers, according to the express authorization of the reviewers and the current editorial policy. These practices aim to increase the transparency, editorial responsibility and traceability of the scientific evaluation process, in line with the recommendations of the SciELO Network for Open Science. |

BioSCIENCE supports and encourages the openness, sharing, and availability of research data, codes, methods, supplementary materials, and other products resulting from published studies, whenever applicable, respecting ethical, legal, confidentiality, privacy, and sensitive data protection aspects. Authors must inform, at the time of submission and in the published article, the availability of research data related to the manuscript, indicating whether the data, codes, protocols, supplementary materials, or other research products have been deposited in specialized institutional or thematic repositories, indicating the respective link, persistent identifier, or DOI, when available. When datasets, code, supplementary materials or other research products are not deposited in specialized, institutional or thematic repositories, this information may be made available directly in the published article, in supplementary files or through a specific declaration of data availability. When the data cannot be made publicly available, the authors must present a clear justification, considering ethical, legal, contractual, confidentiality, privacy of the participants or protection of sensitive data restrictions. BioSCIENCE's open data policy aims to increase the transparency, reproducibility, traceability and integrity of scientific research, in accordance with the recommendations of the SciELO Network for Open Science. Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
BioSCIENCE is guided by its commitment to scientific integrity, editorial transparency and responsibility in the communication of knowledge, basing its policies on the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the regulations of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the EQUATOR Network. All submitted manuscripts must be original and are evaluated for textual similarity, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and other forms of scientific misconduct, including fabrication or falsification of data and improper manipulation of images. Authors, reviewers, and editors must declare financial, institutional, or personal conflicts of interest that may interfere with the editorial process. In the face of suspicions or evidence of scientific misconduct, the journal BioSCIENCE will follow the international flowcharts recommended by COPE. When necessary, formal measures will be adopted to correct the scientific record, including errata, expressions of concern and retractions, with transparency, traceability of versions and preservation of the credibility of scientific communication. Policy on Conflict of Interest
Considering that a conflict of interest is any act that interferes with peer review, editorial decision-making, or the publication of articles, authors must explicitly and individually declare any potential conflict of interest financial, direct and/or indirect, and non-financial, etc., in a document signed and attached to the submission platform. In case of a conflict of interest on the part of the reviewers, the Editorial Committee will forward the manuscript to another ad hoc reviewer. The same criteria are adopted for the area editors and national and international advisors of the Journal, including the editor-in-chief. If an undisclosed conflict of interest comes to light after publication, the Journal will act in accordance with COPE guidelines. Adoption of Similarity Software
BioSCIENCE adopts the Crossref Similarity Check as a similarity checking software, with the objective of ensuring the originality of submitted manuscripts and identifying possible cases of plagiarism, self-plagiarism and other forms of scientific misconduct. All submitted articles are checked for textual similarity. This analysis takes place in the initial stage of the editorial flow, during the preliminary conference of the mandatory documents and the technical and formal pre-analysis of the submission, before the manuscript continues for editorial screening and peer review. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
BioSCIENCE follows the guidelines of the guide for the use of artificial intelligence tools and resources in research communication. The use of artificial intelligence tools, chatbots or other similar resources may be accepted as support for writing, linguistic revision, textual organization or formal improvement of the manuscript, as long as it is duly declared by the authors. Attribution of authorship to artificial intelligence tools is prohibited. Full responsibility for the scientific content, originality, accuracy of information, integrity of data, references, and conclusions presented remains exclusively with the authors. Gender and Sex Issues
BioSCIENCE advises authors, reviewers, and editors to observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER), whenever applicable to study design, data analysis, presentation of results, and interpretation of findings. The journal recommends the correct use of the terms sex and gender, the adequate description of these variables when pertinent to the study, and respect for the privacy rights of the participants. Personal or identifiable data of patients must be removed from manuscripts, figures, videos, supplementary materials and other documents, except when there is express written authorization from the patient or legal guardian. In addition, the journal BioSCIENCE observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee
BioSCIENCE requires that research involving human beings or animals present prior approval by a competent and accredited Ethics Committee, when applicable. In the item Methods, authors must inform that the research has been approved by the Ethics Committee, indicating the corresponding process number, opinion or CAAE. In addition, authors must attach, in the submission system, the term or declaration of approval of the Ethics Committee of the institution responsible for approving the research. |

Types of Documents Accepted
BioSCIENCE accepts submissions in a continuous flow of scientific documents compatible with its focus and editorial scope, considering originality, scientific relevance, methodological quality, contribution to the health area and interest to its readers. Among the types of documents accepted by the journal are: Original Article, Review Article, Case Report and Editorial. When applicable, the journal may consider other types of documents compatible with the journal's editorial policy and with the taxonomy adopted by the SciELO Network, such as brief communication, letter, comment, erratum, retraction or addendum. The methodological designs accepted within the scope of the original articles include, among others, clinical trials, observational studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, case series, experimental studies, diagnostic studies, prognostic studies, and other research designs compatible with good methodological and ethical practices in the health area. Manuscripts can be submitted in Portuguese, English or Spanish. The journal accepts manuscripts previously made available as preprints, as long as they are deposited on servers recognized and considered reliable by the editorial committee. Prior disclosure in a congress, annals or preprint server does not invalidate the submission and/or publication in the BioSCIENCE journal, as long as the manuscript follows the journal's regular editorial flow. |
Authors' Contribution
BioSCIENCE advises that the authors' contributions be explained individually, through a specific statement of authorship, describing the participation of each author in the development of the article. The journal uses the CRediT taxonomy to identify authorial contributions. Among the categories provided are: conceptualization, data curation, data analysis, receipt of funding, research, methodology, project administration, availability of tools, development, implementation and testing of software, supervision, validation of data and experiments, design of the data presentation, writing of the original manuscript, writing, revision and editing. The Instructions to authors also establish that the inclusion of authors whose contribution does not fit the criteria established by the CRediT taxonomy is not justified. Thus, the text of the journal presents clear guidance on the obligation to explain the individual contributions of the authors. |
Manuscript Preparation
BioSCIENCE advises that authors present their manuscripts in a structured, clear and compatible way with the type of study submitted. The manuscript must contain a title page with a title in Portuguese and English, identification of the authors with full institutional affiliation, ORCID, contact author's e-mail, structured abstract, keywords or descriptors in Portuguese and English, information on funding, DOI registration when applicable, and a statement of approval by the institutional ethics committee. The journal recommends that authors follow international scientific reporting guidelines, according to the study design, such as EQUATOR Network, PRISMA, PICO, CARE, and CONSORT, when relevant. It also establishes formal criteria for the preparation of the text, including file format, font, spacing, word limit, maximum number of figures and tables, quality of illustrations, and standardization of citations and references in the Vancouver style. The work must be suitable for publication in the journal BioSCIENCE for its originality, scientific relevance, contemporary importance, adherence to the scope of the journal and interest to readers, in addition to complying with the ethical, methodological, editorial and bibliographic requirements described in the Instructions to Authors. |

Citations and References
BioSCIENCE adopts the Vancouver style for the standardization of citations and bibliographic references. In-text quotations should be numbered consecutively, in Arabic numerals, according to the order in which they are first mentioned in the manuscript. The final list of references should follow the same numerical sequence as the citations in the text and should not be organized in alphabetical order. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the standard adopted by the Index Medicus. References with up to six authors must present all authors; when there are more than six, the first six should be indicated, followed by "et al.". It is recommended that all references cited in the text are mandatorily listed at the end of the manuscript, and that all references listed have been effectively cited in the text. References must contain the essential information for identifying the source consulted, including authors, title, periodical or work, year, volume, number, pages and DOI or electronic address, when applicable. BioSCIENCE advises that specific examples be used according to the type of document referenced, including scientific articles, books, book chapters, electronic documents, datasets, and preprints. |

Financing Statement
Authors must inform, at the time of submission, all sources of funding or support received for the study, including funding agencies, public or private institutions, sponsors, scholarships, grants, agreements or contracts related to the work. The statement must contain the full name of the funding source, the number of the process, notice, contract or agreement, if any, and the description of the role played by the source of support in the development of the research. It should also be informed whether the funder or sponsor participated in the study design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation, writing of the manuscript, critical review, approval of the final version, or decision to submit the article for publication. When there is no funding, authors must expressly state: "This study has not received specific funding from public, private, or nonprofit agencies." When there is funding without interference in the study, it is recommended to state: "The funding source had no participation in the study design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation, writing of the manuscript, or decision to submit for publication." |

In addition to the specific guidelines for the preparation and submission of manuscripts, the journal BioSCIENCE reinforces that all submitted papers must observe principles of research ethics, scientific integrity, editorial transparency, originality, and authorial responsibility.
