The journal follows the Gold Open Access model, providing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.
Under this condition, the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to others using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution - CC-BY) allowing for immediate free access to the work and permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.
 

The authors are requested to inform: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its URL location; (b) whether data, software codes and other materials underlying the manuscript text are properly cited and referenced; and, (c) whether this material is open for access to the reviewers during the peer reviewing process.

Authors are encouraged to make available, previously or at the time of publication, all content (data, software codes and other materials) underlying the manuscript text. Such material should preferably be deposited in publicly accessible databases (NCBI, Zenodo, SciELO Data, or in institutional repositories that permit public access). Exceptions are possible in cases of legal and ethical issues. The objective is to facilitate the manuscript evaluation and, upon publication of the respective manuscript, contribute to preserving and reusing the contents and research in the framework of Open Science.

The journal considers contributions that present the results of original research in genetics, evolution, molecular biology, bioinformatics and related scientific disciplines. Manuscripts presenting methods and applications only, without an analysis of genetic data, will not be considered. Review articles are welcome, but in case they are not invited to Special Issues, the editors should be contacted prior to submission. 
Submitted articles must not have been under submission or editorial reviews in any other journal and will be selected for evaluation only if they fully comply with the journal's standards.
The journal publishes articles in English only. 
The journal accepts the submission of manuscripts previously deposited in preprint servers, but this must be explicitly stated in the Cover Letter. Preprint submissions from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. Acceptance of preprints from other servers will be evaluated by the journal editors.
Upon acceptance for publication in Genetics and Molecular Biology, articles will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

Article types: GMB considers six formats. 

Research articles – present comprehensive, original research results. The text should be divided into the following elements:
Introduction – informing the background that led to the study.
Material (or Subjects) and Methods – informing methodological details relevant to the conduct of the study; statistical methods should be explained at the end of this section.
Results – informing the key results of the study; undue repetition in text and tables should be avoided. Statistics analyses should be presented as complete as possible, i.e., not only P-values, but also all other test variables required for full appreciation of the results. Comments on relevance of the results are appropriate, but broader aspects should be part of the Discussion section.
Discussion – here, the findings of the study should be placed in context of relevant published data. 

Short Communications – present brief observations that do not warrant full-length articles. They should not be communications of preliminary results. They should be 15 or fewer typed pages in double spaced 12-point type, including literature cited, include an Abstract, but no further subdivision, with introduction, material and methods, results and discussion in a single section and without headers. Up to four items (tables and/or figures) may be submitted. The title page and reference section format follows that of a full-length Research Article.

Genome Insight – this manuscript type is for submissions, usually of approximately 1500 words (up to four tables or figures), that present new genome data as they become submitted to GenBank. This section is the premier forum to deliver that information directly to the genome community in a rapid and efficient publication of the genome. Data must be related to a complete (or nearly complete) and fully annotated genome for prokaryotes or viruses, but a draft may be accepted for a eukaryote genome. While the focus of Genome Insight is necessarily directed to novel sequences, the manuscript may also contain specifically novel biological, evolutionary, biotechnological and/or metabolic insights revealed by data. The work may also provide comparative analyses of previously published genomes that contain a substantial and novel insight of broadest biological and genetic significance. The manuscript format is the same as for Short Communications.

Review Articles
Review Articles are welcome. In case of submissions that were not specifically invited for a special issue of GMB, the Editors must be contacted prior to submission, and for this, please, provide an Abstract and a list of your recent publications in the area.

Book Reviews
Aspiring reviewers should contact the Editors when proposing to write a review on a book related to the areas outlined in Scope of the Journal.

History, Story and Memories
These are accounts on historical aspects of Genetics relating to Brazil.

Manuscripts must be submitted exclusively through the "SciELO Submission" system https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/gmb-scielo, along with a Cover Letter to the editors, any supplementary research data, and, if applicable, the ethics committee approval form(s).
To be considered for publication, manuscripts must be written concisely, with the accuracy and clarity necessary for complete comprehension. They must undergo spelling and grammar review before submission to the journal.  Texts (including figure legends and tables) must be prepared in .doc or .docx (Word for Windows) format, in Times New Roman font size 12, and typed double-spaced.
The different sections of the articles should be arranged as follows:
Page 1: Manuscript title; name(s) of the author(s) with the first name spelled out; a list of the author ORCIDs (Original Code); a list of the institutional affiliation(s) including city and country information, with affiliations identified by Arabic numerals; information on the number of figures; up to five keywords; an abbreviated title (maximum 35 characters) for use as page header in the published manuscript; a footnote informing the name of the corresponding author and current address and email for contact.

Page 2 and the subsequent manuscript sections must be organized in the following order:
An Abstract as a single paragraph that does not exceed 200 words and summarizes the main results and conclusions of the study, without references.
The main text (for divisions see section on Article types, below), must be followed by a Statements section consisting of the following items: Acknowledgments, Funding information, a Data Availability Statement, Declaration of Conflict of Interest, and, if applicable, a Declaration stating that the research was approved by an Institutional Ethics Committee.
Next, the References section, followed by an Internet Resources section (if applicable), a list of table titles and figure captions, and a list of brief titles for the supplementary material items.
The main text should be as succinct as possible. In the text, numbers nine or less must be written out except as part of a date, a fraction or decimal, a percentage, or a unit of measurement. Use Arabic numerals for numbers larger than nine. Do not start a sentence with an Arabic numeral. Names of genera, species and infraspecific taxa must be presented in italics; we also recommend to present names of orders or families in the Title and/or when first mentioned in the text.  Abbreviations used in the text should be spelled out in full in the text at first use, except for commonly used abbreviations in the field of Genetics and Molecular Biology. 

Tables and figures must be submitted as separate items.

Citations in the main text should be presented by the authors’ surnames and date of publication; citations with two authors must include both names separated by “and”; in citations with three or more authors, list the name the first author followed by et al.. When listing two or more references in the same citation, this must be in chronological order, separated by semi-colons. When two or more works in a citation were published in the same year, list them alphabetically by the first author surname. For two or more works by the same author(s) in a citation, list them chronologically, with the years separated by commas. (Example: Freire-Maia et al., 1966a, 1966b, 2000). Only articles that are published or in press can be cited. In the case of personal communications or unpublished results, all contributors must be listed by initials and last name (et al. should not be used).
In the References list the citations referred to in the main text must be ordered alphabetically by the first author’s surname. References with the same first author should be ordered as follows: first, as single author in chronological order; next, with only one more co-author in alphabetical order by the second author’s name; and finally followed by references with more than two co-authors, in chronological order, independent of the second author’s surname. In references with more than 10 authors, only the first ten should be listed, followed by et al. Use standard abbreviations for journal titles as suggested by NCBI or Web of Science.
