Brief Background
|
Gestão & Produção is a journal with tradition and recognition in the communities of Industrial Engineering, Management, and related fields. It is published by the Department of Industrial Engineering (DEP) at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), building on the experience accumulated by the faculty members of this institution. The journal’s origins trace back to the publication of the “Cadernos DEP” in the early 1980s, followed later by the “Cadernos de Engenharia de Produção”. The last three issues of the Cadernos de Engenharia de Produção was as a pilot test for the launch of Gestão & Produção in April 1994, as they had already established a publication frequency (every four months) and the blind peer review evaluation process. The journal has published more than 1,500 articles and is indexed in platforms such as Scopus, EBSCO, DOAJ, among others. Since 2016, all articles have been published in English, which has expanded the journal’s international reach. As a result, Gestão & Produção now receives submissions from different countries and continents, broadening its audience and impact. The target audience of Gestão & Produção includes professors, researchers, graduate students, undergraduate students, and professionals working in the fields of Industrial Engineering, Management, and related areas. The journal follows a continuous publication flow and considers only original works. In addition, Gestão & Produção also publishes Special Sections on areas or topics of interest to the community. The Editorial Board has been selected with great rigor and care to ensure the journal’s editorial quality and integrity. Open Access

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted online access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights of use to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY 4.0), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |

This journal follows the Gold Open Access model. Gestão & Produção follows Open Science, a global movement that seeks to make knowledge generated from scientific research open, accessible, and shared with the worldwide scientific community. Ethics in Publication

Gestão & Produção follows and recommends that Authors, Reviewers, and Editors adhere to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All cases of suspected plagiarism or misconduct must be reported to the journal and will be investigated. The following describes the basic principles that Authors, Reviewers, and Editors agree to follow when submitting or evaluating articles for Gestão & Produção. Authors: 1. Ensure that the text, data and ideas presented represent the original result of their own work and do not infringe on the intellectual property of third parties, institutions, or previously published works; 2. All Authors in the list of Authors of the article are equally responsible for the submitted content and must cooperate with requests for additional information in case of eventual investigations; 3. The Corresponding Author must obtain written authorization from all Co-Authors. Only those who have made an effective scientific and/or analytical and writing contribution should be listed as Authors, while other collaborators should be acknowledged in the acknowledgments section; 4. Authors must not submit the manuscript for evaluation in any other journal or publication outlet simultaneously; 5. Authors must not submit previously published work or divide a single study into smaller parts to submit them separately as multiple articles; 6. When required, Authors must obtain approval from an ethics committee and provide the approval details at submission; 7. Potential conflicts of interest, whether financial, professional or personal, must be disclosed individually by each Author; 8. All sources of funding must be properly declared, including the name of the agency and the grant or process number. Reviewers: 1. Respond promptly to invitations, stating whether or not they agree to review, and submit their review within the specified deadline; 2. Notify the Editor-in-Chief whenever there are suspicions of plagiarism or misconduct; 3. Evaluate manuscripts in a completely impartial manner and free from bias or influence of any kind. When submitting a review, reviewers must clearly disclose any potential conflicts of interest related to the work being evaluated; 4. Do not use aggressive, offensive or sarcastic language; 5. Provide reviews that include both strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript, with justifications; 6. Conduct the review independently, without external assistance, and without sharing the manuscript or its data with colleagues or on digital platforms. Reviewers must adhere to the highest ethical standards, maintain complete confidentiality, and refrain from using the information in their own research until the work is published; 7. Do not use Artificial Intelligence tools for generating the reviews. Limited use (e.g., for grammar checking or translation assistance) is acceptable, provided it is declared in the confidential comments to the Editor. Editors: 1. Make every effort to ensure that peer review is impartial and maintains anonymity between Authors and Reviewers; 2. Assess and ensure that any potential conflicts of interest disclosed by Authors are published. When submitting their own manuscript, Editors must ensure that it is handled by another editor; 3. Provide mechanisms and encourage the use of plagiarism detection tools; 4. Follow the guidelines of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) in all cases of suspected misconduct or lack of ethical attitude, seeking more information and taking the necessary actions by publishing expressions of concern, errata, or retractions. |

The focus of Gestão & Produção is the dissemination of original works that present research and scientific results relevant to the fields of Industrial Engineering, Management, and related areas, through empirical, theoretical, and simulation studies. The scope of published articles must demonstrate alignment with these areas. |

Preprints
|
Gestão & Produção adopts an open policy regarding preprints, recognizing the importance of this practice for the rapid advancement of science and the sharing of results with the academic community. A preprint definition is a manuscript ready for submission to a journal, deposited in reliable preprint servers, such as SciELO Preprints, either before or in parallel with its formal submission. Alongside continuous publication, this practice is used as a mechanism to accelerate research communication. It is important for authors to be aware that the use of preprints may affect the double-blind review process. Therefore, the decision to use preprints is a choice of the authors. Our journal allows authors to post their articles as preprints prior to official submission for publication. Peer Review Process
|
Gestão & Produção follows a rigorous peer review process through the following main steps: 1. Compliance Check: Upon submission, the Editorial Assistant verifies whether the manuscript follows the Author Guidelines. If not, the manuscript is returned to the authors for adjustments. Once the requirements are met, the manuscript is forwarded to the Editor-in-Chief; 2. Initial Evaluation by the Editor: The Editor-in-Chief verifies whether the manuscript is original, within the scope of the journal, meets quality standards, and complies with the anti-plagiarism policy. Manuscripts that fail to meet these criteria are rejected at this stage. 3. Review Process: The Editor-in-Chief evaluates the scope of the manuscript and then assigns it to an Associate Editor, who selects a minimum of two expert reviewers for further analysis; 4. Reviewers’ Reports: Reviewers anonymously evaluate the manuscript and submit their opinions through the review system. Based on these reports, the Associate Editor makes a preliminary recommendation, which is forwarded to the Editor-in-Chief; 5. Final Decision: The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision on the manuscript, which may be accepted, rejected, or returned for revisions. This decision is communicated to the authors. Once accepted, the manuscripts are processed under a continuous publication flow and forwarded for formatting, editing, and publication. Starting in 2025, all published articles will include the name of the editor responsible for the final decision on the manuscript. |
Open Data

With the aim of promoting the advancement of Open Science practices and ensuring transparency in the process of knowledge production, Authors are requested to use original data in their research and to explicitly present all variables, conditions of treatment of the analyzed material, and the methodologies employed in producing the data analyzed in the study. The authors should provide sufficient documentation to allow readers to understand the choices made and the conditions under which the results were obtained. If supplementary research data exist, the corresponding author must indicate in the manuscript the location, nature, referencing, and availability statement of such data. Fees
|
Gestão & Produção does not charge a submission fee. However, a publication fee is charged, only if the article is accepted. The fee of R$ 650.00 (six hundred and fifty Brazilian reais) will be charged for authors affiliated with Brazilian institutions, and US$ 200.00 (two hundred US dollars) for authors affiliated with institutions outside Brazil. This fee covers part of the editorial processing of the article. The article will only be published after this fee has been paid. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Policy on Conflict of Interest
|
Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. They may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, the authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing any financial or other conflicts of interest that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must disclose it in a signed statement and attach it to the submission platform. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
|
Anti-Plagiarism System Gestão & Produção uses the Turnitin system to verify the originality of submissions and to ensure its commitment to academic integrity. This is an internationally recognized tool for plagiarism detection and originality assessment. Any manuscript showing a high similarity rate with previously published works will not proceed to peer review and may be immediately rejected. It is important to emphasize that responsibility for the originality of the manuscript lies with the Authors. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
|
The journal does not use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the manuscript evaluation process. Authors have the right and freedom to use GenAI tools and resources that assist in the preparation, writing, revision, and translation of their manuscripts, provided that attribution standards are respected and ethical and scientific integrity are maintained. However, only humans can be listed as authors, and they must observe the following rules and practices recommended by SciELO:
Hiding the use of content generated by GenAI is considered an ethical violation, as it goes against the principles of transparency and honesty in research. |
Gender and Sex Issues
|
Authors are encouraged to follow the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER), which provide recommendations for reporting information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of findings. It is worth mentioning that Gestão & Produção has been making ongoing efforts to promote gender equity in the composition of its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee
|
When submitting a manuscript, Authors must attach a statement of approval from the institutional ethics committee responsible for authorizing the research, when applicable to interviews or experiments involving human subjects, and in compliance with the ethical procedures established for scientific research. The anonymity of research participants and, when necessary, of institutions must be ensured, unless there is express permission for identification. Therefore, the authorization or restriction regarding identification must be indicated in a note within the manuscript file. The same applies to images of people and/or institutions. All manuscript musts comply with the guidelines defined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). |

Articles published in Gestão & Produção are open access under the Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY 4.0 license, which allows use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, without restrictions, provided that the original work is correctly cited. Authors retain copyright without receiving any remuneration, while granting the journal the right to make the original publication and keep it permanently updated. All published articles receive a DOI - Digital Object Identifier. |

Types of Documents Accepted
|
Gestão & Produção publishes the following types of articles: 1. Original Article: research that represents a technical-scientific advancement; 2. Case Study: articles that describe and analyze cases/situations of companies or report experiences arising from real applications; 3. Literature Review: articles that provide a comprehensive review of a topic or subject; 4. General Review: articles that present a partial but useful review, thus offering a meaningful contribution. Every submission must be original. Articles previously published in conference proceedings may only be considered if they present significant expansion of the research and scientific results, in addition to offering a relevant contribution to their respective field. The subject addressed in the submitted article must show adherence to the areas of Industrial Engineering, Management, and related fields. The best way to demonstrate this alignment is by relating the submitted work to previous articles published in Gestão & Produção and in other journals recognized in the Industrial Engineering field. The journal allows the use of preprints, which is a choice of the Authors. Submissions can be in English or Portuguese, however, if accepted, every article must be published in English. |
Authors' Contribution

At the time of submission, Authors must clearly indicate the role of each co-author, according to the categories established by the CREDiT taxonomy. Contribution categories include, but are not limited to: conceptualization, data curation, formal analysis, funding acquisition, investigation, methodology, project management, and writing. |
Manuscript Preparation
|
Language Submissions may be made in Portuguese or English. After acceptance for publication, authors will be required to submit the final versions in English through the submission system. Publishing articles in English aims to provide greater exposure and collaboration with the international community, in addition to meeting the requirements imposed by evaluation and funding institutions both in Brazil and abroad. Gestão & Produção will not accept manuscripts that have been automatically translated by computer programs without subsequent revision and verification by human professionals. The cost and responsibility of translation lie with the authors. Special care must be taken during translation with data, tables, and figures, particularly regarding decimal notation. In Portuguese texts, commas should be used as decimal separators, while in English texts, periods should be used. Foreign words appearing in the text must be written in italics. Gestão & Produção supports and recommends the use of the checklists available on the EQUATOR network, so that authors can prepare their manuscripts according to the best scientific communication practices most appropriate for each type of research. |
Article Submission Format
|
Preparation Guidelines Articles must be submitted through the ScholarOne submission system. Manuscripts must not exceed 25 pages, excluding references. They should be prepared in Microsoft Word (or equivalent), using Times New Roman, font size 12, line spacing 1.5. Margins should be set to 2.5 cm on all sides (top, bottom, right, and left). The file size must not exceed 3 MB. In addition, all file properties must be removed from the manuscript. Documents required for submission At the time of submission, authors must provide three documents: the open science compliance form (available at the link below); a document with the authorship identification of the authors along with the authors' statements and contribution; and the manuscript file (with no author identification).
Authorship Include the full names of all authors, one per line, using superscript numbers to link to affiliations, and an asterisk “*” to identify the corresponding author. Contributors who do not meet the authorship criteria, according to our editorial policies, should be included only in the acknowledgments section. Gestão & Produção requires the ORCID ID of all authors. Example: Author's Name (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0060-072X)1 Second Author’s Name (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0060-073X)*1 List of Affiliations The list of affiliations must indicate the institution, department, city, state, and country. It is recommended that these details appear directly below the authors’ names, with one affiliation per line, following the example below: Federal University of São Carlos, Department of Production Engineering, São Carlos – SP – Brazil. The correspondence address of the authors must be presented separately from the institutional affiliation, as follows: Address, P.O. Box, ZIP Code, City, State, Country, Email. Acknowledgments Contributors who do not meet the authorship criteria, as defined in our editorial policies, should be listed only in the acknowledgments. The author identification must be provided in a separate document from the main text, named authorship.docx. Statements The following statements must be prepared according to the journal’s editorial policies: Conflict of interest statement Gestão & Produção requires that all authors disclose any potential conflicts of interest, whether financial or personal, involving other individuals or organizations that could be interpreted as influencing the research or its interpretation. Authors must provide individual statements, which will be kept on file, and a summarized statement, which will be published in the article. Potential conflicts of interest include participation on boards of directors, consultancy funding, payments for travel or lectures by companies involved in the research, and similar situations. Funding Statement All financial support received by the authors must be declared, always identifying the funding institution, project number, and a description of the institution’s role (if any) in how the research was conducted, as well as in the preparation, collection, and analysis of data. If the funding institution had no role in the research, this must also be stated. Data availability statement Gestão & Produção encourages authors to deposit the data used in their research in repositories such as Mendeley Data, Figshare, or other data repositories. Making data available increases credibility and facilitates derivative studies. To support reproducibility, authors are also encouraged to make available software, codes, models, algorithms, protocols, methods, and other useful materials related to their research. If data are available, they may be cited in the reference list. It is understood that some data may not be available due to legal restrictions, confidentiality, etc. Regardless of whether the data can be shared, authors must provide a statement informing whether the data are available (and how they can be accessed), or explain the reasons why they cannot be made available. Originality Statement Authors must declare whether the article is original or has already been published in full or in part. Gestão & Produção accepts only original submissions. Articles published in abstract form in conference proceedings may be accepted only if they show a significant expansion of the research and scientific results and provide a relevant contribution to the respective field. Any manuscript presenting a high similarity rate with previously published works will not proceed to peer review and may be immediately rejected. Responsibility for the originality of the manuscript lies with the Authors. Authors' Contributions Statement At the time of submission, Authors must clearly indicate the role of each co-author, according to the categories established by the CREDiT taxonomy. Manuscript Title Avoid the use of acronyms or formulas. Keep in mind that the title of your article will often appear in search results, so it should be informative, attractive, and concise. After the title in the main language of the article, include its translated version. Articles written in English must include a Portuguese translation of the title, and vice versa. Abstract and keywords
Prepare an unstructured abstract of 150 to 250 words, written in a self-contained way, without references and without abbreviations. If abbreviations are absolutely necessary, they must be defined within the abstract. The abstract should briefly provide the context of the article, the research gap being addressed, and the main contributions and results. This must be done concisely and within the word limit. Articles written in English must include a Portuguese translation of the abstract and keywords, and vice versa. Sections Organize your text clearly into numbered sections. Subsections should be numbered 1.1 (then 1.1.1, 1.1.2, ...), 1.2, etc. (the abstract should not be included in the numbering). Footnotes Gestão & Produção does not use footnotes under any circumstances. Mathematical equations and expressions Simple formulas displayed inline can be expressed as plain text when possible. All mathematical expressions must be editable, prepared using the native Microsoft Word editor or MathType, and numbered in Arabic numerals and cited in the order in which they appear in the text. Language characteristics For Portuguese texts, use commas as decimal separators; for English texts, use periods. Foreign words appearing in the text should be italicized (for example, et al.). |
Digital Assets
|
Figures Figures, charts, images, flowcharts, and drawings must be cited in the text and numbered in Arabic numerals. They must be inserted in the body of the text, near their first mention, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Captions should be placed directly below the figures. If text appears within a figure, ensure it is in the same language as the article. Since the journal is primarily an online publication, authors may use color in figure preparation. Figures will not be redrawn or edited, so they should preferably be prepared by a professional, ensuring consistency in font type and size throughout the article. Images must not be manipulated or altered in ways that could lead to misinterpretation. If not created by the authors, the source must be indicated, and authors must ensure they have permission to use them. Charts, photographs, diagrams, illustrations, etc. are considered as figures and must be sent in TIFF or JPG formats, with a minimum width of 2,500 pixels, and must allow for clear reading of all text and symbols. When arrows, symbols, letters, or numbers are used to identify parts of figures, ensure that they are clearly explained in the corresponding caption. Tables
Tables must always be editable, that is, prepared using the text editor's create tables feature. Tables must always be cited in the text, numbered in Arabic numerals, and presented in the order they appear. The caption should be a brief description of the Table, and specific explanations about values or abbreviations should be inserted in a footnote to the Table. |
Citations and References
|
Citations Please ensure that all citations appear in the reference list, and vice versa. All citations in the text must follow the guidelines established in the seven edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA style). Citations in the body of the text should always be followed by the year of publication: Donaire (1999) or (Donaire, 1999). When there are two authors, indicate the authors' surnames separated by "&": Ackermann & Eden (2001) or (Ackermann & Eden, 2001). If there are more than two authors, mention the surname of the first, followed by the expression "et al.": Manso et al. (2015) or (Manso et al., 2015). If there is more than one article by the same authors published in the same year, make the distinction with lowercase letters: Manso et al. (2015a, b). To separate two or more citations, use the semicolon: (Manso et al., 2015; Ackermann & Eden, 2001; Donaire, 1999a, b) References The reference list will be formatted to APA style, however authors can submit in any of the established international formats (APA, Harvard, Chicago, etc.), as long as it is presented in alphabetical order by the last name of the first author, followed by the chronological order using lowercase letters (a, b, etc.) when necessary. References must present the name of all authors and the names of journals must be indicated in full. The following are some examples formatted according to the APA standard: Book: Donaire, D. (1999).
