The Brazilian Journal of Political Economy (BJPE) was founded in 1981 by Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira, who remains its editor-in-chief to this day.

Its original name was Revista de Economia Política (Journal of Political Economy). It was changed to the current name because English is the language of economic theory.

In its first 20 years, the journal published the main articles on the theory of inertial   inflation and the Real Plan, which was based on it. In the last 20 years, we have published articles on economic theory, deindustrialization, and the New Developmentalist Economic Theory, which is a macroeconomics of development and studies problems such as the high-interest rate trap and the long-term appreciated exchange rate, the Dutch disease, and the critique of the growth policy with external savings.

BJPE is a journal open to all heterodox schools of economic thought. It is not interested in articles that adopt Neoclassical Economic Theory.

The journal website is open access since 2000, when SciELO started to index it. In 2019, all the previous issues also became available online.

From 1981 to 2025, the journal was published by Centro de Economia Política. Since January 2026, it has been published by the Getulio Vargas Foundation’s Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP). From January 2026 onwards, the journal only publishes papers in English. 

The papers are published in Continuous Article Publication (CAP) system, ensuring speed in making them available online as soon as they are approved, and preserving the BJPE's quarterly issues.

To foster the debate and production of knowledge on economic development, especially works on new-developmentalist economic theory and political economy. More broadly, to make room for theoretical and applied research involving the State and the market.

• To act as a protagonist in the synthesis and renewal of critical economic thinking, whose latest manifestation is the new-developmentalist theory. 
• To become the reference forum for Latin American theoretical traditions and perspectives from the Global South.

Thev BJPE follows the Open Access model, providing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open Access is the condition where the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to others using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution - CC-BY) allowing for immediate free access to the work and permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

BJPE embraces the principles of Open Science to foster greater transparency, accessibility, and collaboration in scholarly research. We believe that high-quality academic knowledge should be openly available and socially impactful, while maintaining rigorous standards of peer review and editorial excellence. 

• Preprint Policy: We accept submissions of manuscripts that have previously been made available on recognized preprint servers (e.g., SciELO Preprints, SSRN, OSF, arXiv, Zenodo). We encourage the early dissemination of ideas to stimulate scholarly exchange. 
• Data Transparency and Reproducibility: We encourage authors to make their datasets, analytical materials, and supplementary files available in open repositories, following FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). When appropriate, authors should include data availability statements. 
• Open Peer Review (Optional): Authors may opt to publish peer review reports and/or reveal the identities of reviewers. We also disclose the name of the Associate Editor responsible for the editorial process in each published article, fostering accountability and transparency. 
• The Open Science Compliance Form is mandatory in the article submission process.

The Brazilian Journal of Political Economy (BJPE excels in the practices of respect for ethical conduct, following the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Guide of Good Practices for the Strengthening of Ethics in Scientific Publication of Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO).

Responsibility of the authors

When submitting articles to the BJPE, authors automatically declare that the contents of the articles are original and unpublished, except for the texts published as preprints. They also declare that the article was not published, complete or incomplete, in another journal, even if in another language, nor was it submitted to another journal simultaneously. In addition, they also undertake to inform the journal when they detect any error or inaccuracy in their work (published, under evaluation or editing) and to collaborate with the editors so that the article is properly retracted or corrected. Authors are responsible for the content of their articles, as well as for the copyright of images and textual or complementary elements to their articles. To ensure an editorial policy based on the criteria defined for the good practice of academic production, avoiding plagiarism, violations of ethical principles, fraud, and possible lawsuits, the Brazilian Journal of Political Economy recommends that authors observe the following steps before submission:

• Check the provisions of the COPE website, to know the ethical principles provided for therein;
• Place the appropriate references to the data incorporated, analyzed, or interpreted from other publications;
• Indicate as authors of the text only the names that have actually participated in all phases of the research and writing of the article. BJPE recommends alignment with the authorship criteria of CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy);
• Inform, if any, the sources of funding for the research that gave rise to the submitted text;
• Declare at the time of manuscript submission if ChatGPT or Large Language Models were used for writing, producing images or graphic elements of the article, or in the collection and analysis of data. Additionally, state that after using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as necessary, assuming full responsibility for the publication's content.

Responsibility of the editor-in-chief and coeditor

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for implementing the journal's editorial policy, monitoring the entire editorial process, coordinating the team of Associate Editors, and those responsible for organizing thematic dossiers. It is also responsible for the dialogue with the members of the Editorial Board, authors of articles, reviewers, indexers, research funding agencies, institutions/forums of the scientific community, and the general public. It is its responsibility to decide which articles will be published in the journal, and for this purpose, it may consult the Editorial Board and the Executive and Associate Editor(s). In the event of complaints of an ethical nature, it will also be up to the Editor-in-Chief to take the appropriate measures to remedy them.

Responsibility of the Editorial Board

It is the responsibility of the Editorial Board to define and comply with the guidelines outlined for the journal, suggesting measures for its improvement, whenever necessary; indicate, when requested, names of experts for issuing evaluative opinions of articles submitted for publication; encourage and disseminate the publication of articles in/of the journal; advise the work of the editors, whenever requested.

Responsibility of the Members of the Executive and Associate Editors

Editors will invest efforts in preventing bad practices and unethical behavior in the publication of articles, not tolerating any type of plagiarism. The editors undertake to evaluate the works submitted to the journal objectively and for their intellectual content, without discrimination of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, geographic origin, or political thought. They also undertake to treat authors' contributions confidentially while they are under evaluation, and if the work is rejected.

Responsibility of the Members of the Editorial Staff

• State that ethical conduct has been followed in all the processes involving the submission, double blind review and publication of articles.
• Guarantee a high standard of ethical conduct, integrity, impartiality, transparency, and agility in communicating with the various actors involved in the submission, evaluation and publication processes.
• Will immediately alert their immediate manager about possible conflicts of interest that could prejudice the integrity of their actions as members of the journal’s Editorial Staff. A conflict of interest is any personal, intellectual, commercial, political, academic or financial issue. • Agree to complete the evaluation within the timeframe agreed to with the editor.
• Will alert the editor about any possible conflicts of interest that could prejudice the integrity of the evaluation process. The Brazilian Journal of Political Economy is a peer-reviewed journal, published since January 1981, in which the economic theory is understood in its classical sense, as a historical-deductive political economy, not as a hypothetical-deductive economy.

The Brazilian Journal of Political Economy is interested in articles on macroeconomics of development, on the recent history of economic thought, and articles discussing the Brazilian or Latin American economies.

Theoretically, the Journal is associated with Classical Developmentalism, Post-Keynesian Economic Theory, and New Developmentalism. In relation to the latter, the Journal is interested in studies that offer new contributions, or are critical, or apply their hypothesis to the analysis of national economies or compare New Developmentalism with the two old theories from which it originates. It is not interested in comparing policies without corresponding theories.

In literature reviews, relevant Brazilian and Latin American authors who deal with the subject should be duly cited.

Since January 2026, the Brazilian Journal of Political Economy has published articles only in English.

When accepting an article submission, the journal uses its interest in publishing it as a criterion.

The BJPE follows the standards defined in the Digital Preservation Policy of the SciELO Program.

Additionally, BJPE uses the LOCKSS system, developed by Stanford University, to create a distributed archive among participating libraries. This system allows these libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. 

BJPE is also part of the Cariniana Network of Digital Preservation Services of IBICT, which provides preservation for any journal in the Open Journal System (OJS) in Brazil.

BJPE follows a rigorous and transparent peer review process, to meet the highest academic standards. Each submission undergoes a structured and multi-layered evaluation, combining editorial expertise and independent scholarly review.

The review process comprises the following stages:

1. Initial Screening: all manuscripts are first screened by the editorial office for format compliance and basic quality requirements. 

2. Plagiarism Check: manuscripts are submitted to similarity detection through the iThenticate system, ensuring originality  and adherence to ethical standards. 

3. Desk Review by Editor-in-Chief: the Editor-in-Chief assesses alignment with BJPE’s scope, theoretical ambition, societal implications, and overall publication potential. Manuscripts lacking clear theoretical and societal contribution or minimum quality standards may be desk-rejected at this stage. 

4. Assignment to Associate Editor: manuscripts passing the initial screening are assigned to an Associate Editor (or Guest Editor with relevant expertise), who conducts a preliminary assessment of fit and contribution to the specific area of knowledge. 

5. Double-Blind Peer Review: articles are reviewed by at least two independent reviewers in a double-blind process. In case of significant divergence in assessments, a third reviewer may be invited to ensure a fair decision. 

6. Editorial Decision: the Associate Editor synthesizes reviewers' evaluation and issues a recommendation (revise and resubmit, accept, or reject). All communication with authors is mediated by the editorial team and based on a constructive approach to improving the article.

7. Revision and Resubmission: authors are encouraged to respond thoroughly to reviewer comments and highlight how revisions have improved the manuscript. In the case of multiple rounds, each is evaluated with the same standards of rigor. 

8. Final Acceptance: once accepted, the manuscript proceeds to the publication workflow, including copyediting, proofreading, and bilingual formatting.

BJPE does not charge any article processing charges (APCs) or submission fees, ensuring equal access to publication regardless of authors’ institutional or geographic context.

Cases of misconduct identified will be dealt with in accordance with the policies of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The BJPE Code of Ethics sets out the basic principles that guide the conduct of all members and partners who interact in the scientific certification and publication process – authors, reviewers, editors, board members and editorial board, reviewers, translators, editorial staff, etc. – and presents the Policies and Procedures for Violation of the Code of Ethics and ethical misconduct.

When errors are identified that do not compromise the scientific integrity of the article, an Errata will be published, in accordance with the SciELO Guide for the Publication of Erratum.

In cases where the reliability of the content is compromised, the journal may publish a Retraction, following the Guide for the register, and publish the Retraction. The retraction will be linked to the original article in a clear and permanent way, preserving the scientific record.

The journal may publish Addenda when there is a need to include relevant additional information, without altering the conclusions of the article, in accordance with the Guide for the registration, marking and publication of Addenda.

All works approved upon their final publication in the Brazilian Journal of Political Economy will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

We invite submissions that are methodologically rigorous, conceptually rich, and relevant to a global audience of scholars, practitioners, and policymakers. We accept the following types of contributions: 

• Theoretical articles: Manuscripts that develop new conceptual frameworks, refine or extend existing theories, or integrate perspectives across disciplines. We expect clear articulation of theoretical assumptions, conceptual boundaries, and implications for future empirical testing and managerial action. They should not exceed 8,000 words. 
• Empirical articles: Studies that develop or test theory using rigorous qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. These papers should demonstrate methodological excellence and offer insights that extend theoretical understanding and inform managerial decision-making in diverse organizational contexts. We also welcome replication studies and meta-analyses. They should not exceed 8,000 words. 
• Econometric papers: The econometric papers should clearly define the hypothesis to be tested and, in the conclusion, the results that already appeared in the tables must be expressed in plain text. It must contain the details of the method employed, the econometric tables, and the data used in the analyses; it should also inform the software version and the routines used. Details of the calculations should be sufficient to enable replication by other researchers. They should not exceed 8,000 words. 
• Literature reviews: Comprehensive and critical syntheses of the state-of-the-art in key areas of economics research. These articles must go beyond descriptive summaries, identifying theoretical gaps, methodological limitations, and clear opportunities for future research. They should not exceed 9,000 words. 
• Short papers: They are similar to the theoretical and empirical papers but shorter, limited to 4,000 words.

BJPE recommends the use of CRediT authorship criteria (Contributor Roles Taxonomy).

General formatting 

• Language of publication: BJPE accepts submissions only in English.
• Length: A maximum of 8,000 words (for Theoretical , Empirical or Econometric papers); 9,000 words (Literature reviews); 4,000 words (Short papers) – for the complete text, including title, abstract, five keywords, tables, figures, and references.  
• Font: Time New Roman, size 12; Alignment: Justified; Line spacing: 1.5.
• Italics: Used for words and/or expressions from a foreign language which are not found in English dictionaries, as well as book titles and periodicals.
• Bold: Used for headings and subheadings.
• Quotation marks: Used for direct citations of up to 40 words.
• Authorship: To preserve anonymity, the identification of the article’s authors is restricted to the registration form in the article submission system. There should be no identification of the author(s) within the article.
• The title must capture the essence of the manuscript, be brief and objective. 
• TITLE (E):Uppercase + bold + justified. Respect the limit of 15 words 
• The abstract must clearly state the theoretical and societal impact.  
• Term ABSTRACT. Text with at most 100 words in upper and lower case in a single paragraph. 
• The total of five keywords. Choose attractive keywords that reflect the topics covered in the document. Respect the limit of five keywords in lowercase, always separated by semicolons. 
• The total of five JEL classifications, as for the Journal of Economic Literature Classification System, always separated by semicolons. 
• Sections: Avoid the use of abbreviations in titles. Headings and subheadings should not be numbered
• Section Heading: Upper case + bold + justified.
• First Subheading: Upper and lower case + bold + justified. 
• Second Subheading: Upper and lower case + bold + gray.  
• Paragraphs: All paragraphs should be indented 0,5cm. 
• Footnotes and endnotes: BJPE does not publish endnotes, only footnotes. When relevant, insert the contente in the text. 
• Acknowledgements: Acknowledgements to financial institutions and the owners of authors’ rights, for reproductions, should be sent in a separate file; after approval, when the article is published, the acknowledgment (s) will be inserted at the bottom of the first page.
• Abbreviations: When a term is presented for the first time in a text, it should be written out, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Subsequent mentions may be abbreviated without explanation. The article should not alternate between the written out and abbreviated forms.

Tables should be in Word format, small (just the essential figures) and limited in number. Line graphs or pie charts, in limited number, must be sent in Excel files that are editable. If these graphics are as images, they must have a good resolution of at least 240 Dpi up to 300 Dpi and saved in JPG. They must be pasted in the file or sent in a separate folder. All equations must be compiled using the equation tool of the Word program or the MathType program. 

Tables and Figures follow the format described in the Publication Manual of the Harvard style and must be inserted after the References and in the text is necessary to mention where they are to be inserted. These elements should be submitted in an editable form and if it is colored it has been transformed into gray or black tones. They should not be sent in separate files.

Figures are graphs, maps, photographs, infographics, and other illustrations not textual. It is numbered in bold and contains the title. 

Attention:  

• The formats considered for editable files are: original Excel file (XLS), Vector (EPS, Ai, PDF and SVG), for Graphics drawn directly in Word, editable text is also suitable and finally, if they are generated or drawn in specific software, must be exported in Vector. 
• The excessive use of tables, figures, exhibits and graphs can make the text more difficult to read and understand. 
• Make sure that all the Tables and Figures are referenced in the text. 
• Make sure that all sources are cited. 

BJPE does not publish attachments or appendices. If it is relevant, they should be incorporated in the text or as a table/exhibit, respecting in this case the formatting for tables/exhibits.

Equations and hypotheses 

Equations should be numbered using Arabic numerals and right-aligned. 

Examples: 

x2 + y2 = z2                       (1) 

(x2 - y2)/2 = z                     (2) 

Hypotheses should be numbered with Arabic numerals and right aligned. The numbering should be preceded by the abbreviation "H". 

Example: H1: Top management leadership has a positive and significant influence on alliances and resources. 

BJPE adopts the Harvard style for citations and references, following the guidelines of the Harvard Reference System.

Submission processing the online submission process, it is important in a separate file (must be attached as a Supplemental File):

• the authors’ data is provided: e-mail, institutional affiliation (main unit/subunit or department), city, state, and country; 
• the link to the individual ORCID page is informed; 
• the link to the individual CV Lattes page is informed (for Brazilians);
• include research funding information;
• Open Science Compliance Form must be completed and uploaded as a supplementary document
• declare at the time of manuscript submission whether any Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools or Large Language Models were used for writing, producing images or graphic elements of the article, or in the collection and analysis of data. Additionally, state that after using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as necessary, assuming full responsibility for the publication's content. 
• declare the possibility or not of conflicts of interest in carrying out and communicating the research. A conflict of interest is any personal, intellectual, commercial, political, academic or financial issue. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence their writing or evaluation of manuscripts. Authors must disclose, at the time of article submission, all funding sources that supported the study.
