ABSTRACT. Coptochilus Amyot & Serville, 1843 is distinguishable from the other Neotropical Scutelleridae by the dorsally concave head, with lateral margins of mandibular plates elevated. Here we describe and revise the species of Coptochilus based on general and genital morphological traits. Coptochilus castaneus (Dallas, 1851), once synonymous with C. ferrugineus Amyot & Serville, 1843, is revalidated, and a new species, C. morrisi, is described from French Guiana. A key to the five species in the genus is provided.

RESUMO: A competição intergenotípica de azevém tetraploide com a população natural diploide pode ser uma ferramenta para reduzir a frequência de indivíduos resistentes em uma área. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar e comparar o desenvolvimento fenológico, custo adaptativo e habilidade competitiva entre genótipos de azevém diploide e tetraploide. Para avaliar o custo adaptativo, os genótipos foram cultivados em vasos, e as variáveis morfológicas de crescimento dos genótipos, avaliadas a cada 15 dias até os 120 dias após a emergência. O desenvolvimento fenológico e os componentes de produtividade das sementes foram mensurados em época única, em conjunto com o custo adaptativo. A habilidade competitiva foi determinada em experimento de série de substituição com proporções de azevém tetraploide e diploide, em que o número de afilhos, estatura, área foliar e massa seca da parte aérea foram avaliados aos 50 dias após a emergência. Os resultados de custo adaptativo demonstraram que o número de afilhos, a área foliar, a massa seca de raiz e o número de sementes foram superiores para o azevém tetraploide e que este apresenta maior habilidade competitiva comparativamente ao diploide, independente das proporções testadas. O azevém tetraploide, por apresentar maior potencial competitivo, pode ser útil para redução da frequência de azevém diploide resistente a herbicidas.

ABSTRACT: The intergenotypic competition of tetraploid ryegrass with natural diploid population may be a tool to reduce the frequency of resistant individuals in an area. This study aimed to identify and compare the phenological development, fitness cost, and competitive ability between diploid and tetraploid ryegrass genotypes. Genotypes were grown in pots, and the morphological variables of genotype growth were assessed every 15 days up to 120 days after emergence to evaluate the fitness cost. Phenological development and seed yield components were measured in a single time together with the fitness cost. Competitive ability was determined in a replacement-series experiment with proportions of tetraploid and diploid ryegrass, in which the number of tillers, plant height, leaf area, and shoot dry weight were assessed at 50 days after emergence. The results of fitness cost showed that the number of tillers, leaf area, root dry weight, and the number of seeds were higher for tetraploid ryegrass, which presented a higher competitive ability than the diploid genotype regardless of the tested proportions. Tetraploid ryegrass may be useful for reducing the frequency of herbicide-resistant diploid ryegrass because of its higher competitive potential.

RESUMO: O azevém é planta daninha importante nos cultivos de trigo devido à evolução da resistência a diferentes mecanismos de ação. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o desenvolvimento fenológico, custo adaptativo e habilidade competitiva entre biótipos de azevém suscetível e com resistência múltipla aos herbicidas inibidores da 5-enolpiruvilchiquimato-3-fosfato sintase (EPSPs) e acetolactato sintase (ALS). Para avaliar o custo adaptativo e o desenvolvimento fenológico, os biótipos foram cultivados em vasos, e as variáveis morfológicas de crescimento foram avaliadas até os 140 dias após a emergência. O desenvolvimento fenológico foi avaliado juntamente com o custo adaptativo. A habilidade competitiva foi determinada em experimento de série de substituição com proporções de azevém resistente e suscetível. As proporções testadas foram: 100:0 (estande puro de azevém resistente), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100% (estande puro de suscetível), onde o número de afilhos, a estatura, área foliar e massa seca da parte aérea foram avaliados aos 50 dias após a emergência. O maior período de afilhamento do azevém resistente é o principal fator envolvido na diferença do desenvolvimento fenológico entre os biótipos. O biótipo resistente é superior ao suscetível quanto a estatura (EP), massa seca da parte aérea (MSPA) e taxa de crescimento absoluto (TCA), enquanto o suscetível possui maior número de afilhos (NA) e razão de área foliar (RAF). Assim, o biótipo resistente não apresenta custo adaptativo. Para a habilidade competitiva, verificou-se que não há diferença entre os biótipos nas diferentes proporções testadas quando ocupam o mesmo nicho ecológico.

ABSTRACT: Ryegrass is an important weed in wheat cultivations due to the evolution of resistance to different mechanisms of action. This study aimed to compare the phenological development, fitness cost, and competitive ability between ryegrass biotypes susceptible and with multiple resistance to 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPs) and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides. Fitness cost and phenological development were evaluated from biotypes grown in pots, and morphological growth variables were determined up to 140 days after emergence. Phenological development was evaluated with a fitness cost. Competitive ability was determined in a replacement-series experiment with proportions of resistant and susceptible ryegrass. The tested proportions were 100:0 (pure resistant ryegrass stand), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100% (pure susceptible ryegrass stand), where the number of tillers, height, leaf area, and shoot dry matter were evaluated at 50 days after emergence. The longer tillering period of resistant ryegrass was the main factor involved in the difference in phenological development between biotypes. The resistant biotype was superior to the susceptible regarding height, shoot dry matter, and absolute growth rate, while the susceptible biotype had a higher number of tillers and leaf area ratio. Thus, the resistant biotype had no fitness cost. For competitive ability, no difference was observed between biotypes in the different tested proportions when they occupied the same ecological niche.

RESUMO A infecção por citomegalovírus humano (CMVH) é a principal causa de morbidade em receptores de transplante renal. Este estudo pretende investigar se a expressão de CD64 em polimorfonucleares (PMN) é útil para a detecção de infecção por CMVH em 11 receptores renais durante 60 dias. Do total de pacientes, nove foram positivos para antigenemia pp65 e para CMVH por reação em cadeia da polimerase quantitativa (qPCR), todos apresentando neutrófilos circulantes que expressam CD64 3-4 semanas antes do pico de antigenemia pp65. Esses resultados sugerem que a quantificação de PMN CD64 em conjunto com a antigenemia pp65 pode ser útil para o diagnóstico precoce de HCMV no pós-transplante.

ABSTRACT Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is the main cause of morbidity in kidney transplant recipients. This study aims to investigate if CD64 expression on polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells is useful for the detection of HCMV infection in eleven kidney recipients during sixty days. From the total patients, nine were positive for both pp65 antigenemia and HCMV by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), all of which had circulating neutrophils expressing CD64 3-4 weeks prior to pp65 antigenemia peak. These results suggest that quantification of PMN CD64 together with pp65 antigenemia could be useful for the early diagnosis of HCMV after transplantation.

Nesse trabalho é descrito um experimento quantitativo destinado a avaliar a transferência de calor durante o resfriamento de um cilindro de aço e comparar os resultados experimentais com valores previstos em modelos de convecção e radiação do calor. Além de executar os ensaios, o aluno é requisitado a confeccionar uma planilha eletrônica que detalha os cálculos realizados e avalia a consistência dos resultados. O experimento foi concebido para ser facilmente implementado em aulas práticas de cursos de graduação; e, nesse intuito, buscou-se utilizar materiais e equipamentos que viabilizem a realização de ensaios simples e de fácil execução. Os resultados obtidos são satisfatórios e propiciam uma análise quantitativa sobre os mecanismos envolvidos na transferência de calor num sistema físico real.

This work describes a quantitative experiment to evaluate the heat transfer during the cooling of a steel cylinder and compare the experimental results with predicted values in convection and heat radiation models. In addition to performing the tests, the student is required to prepare a spreadsheet that details the calculations performed and evaluates the consistency of the results. The experiment was designed to be easily implemented in experimental classes of undergraduate courses; and, for this, we tried to use materials and equipment that make feasible the realization of simple and easy execution tests. The results obtained are satisfactory and provide a quantitative analysis on heat transfer mechanisms involved in a real physical system.

Resumo Neste texto, argumentamos que as avaliações das cotas universitárias precisam incorporar o conceito de reconhecimento social. Se as ações afirmativas que beneficiam alunos de escolas públicas e não brancos nas universidades públicas se tornaram um fenômeno de grande visibilidade, ainda há muito o que se avançar na interpretação dos seus reais efeitos. Desse modo, propomos discutir as mudanças introduzidas por essas políticas no quotidiano da Universidade Federal de Sergipe, dando prioridade à autopercepção dos alunos cotistas e às interações por eles estabelecidas com outros alunos e com os professores. Para isso, utilizou-se uma metodologia que alia métodos qualitativos (grupos focais) com métodos quantitativos (survey). Os principais resultados da pesquisa apontam para o aumento da autoestima dos cotistas e, ao mesmo tempo, para a existência, por razões econômicas e de classe, de tensões entre eles e os alunos não cotistas e, principalmente, entre os professores dos cursos mais prestigiosos.

Abstract In this paper, we argue that evaluations of university quotas must incorporate the concept of social recognition. Indeed, even if affirmative action in public universities for students from public schools and non-whites has become a phenomenon of great visibility, we still have much to advance in the interpretation of its actual effects. Thus, we propose to discuss the changes introduced by these policies into everyday life in the Federal University of Sergipe, giving priority to self-perception of quota students and to the interactions established by them with other students and with teachers. For this purpose, we used a methodology that combines qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative (survey) methods. The main research results point out increased self-esteem of these students and, at the same time, the existence, for economic and class reasons, of tensions between them and the non-quota students, and especially between them and teachers of the most prestigious courses.

Resumen En este artículo se argumenta que las evaluaciones de las cuotas universitarias deben incorporar el concepto de reconocimiento social. En efecto, si la acción afirmativa en las universidades públicas a favor de los estudiantes de las escuelas públicas y los no blancos se han convertido en un fenómeno de gran visibilidad, todavía tenemos mucho que avanzar en la interpretación de sus efectos reales. Por lo tanto, proponemos discutir los cambios introducidos por estas políticas en el cotidiano de la Universidad Federal de Sergipe, dando prioridad a la auto-percepción de los cuotistas y las interacciones establecidas por ellos con otros estudiantes y con los profesores. Para esto, se utilizó una metodología que combina métodos cualitativos (grupos focales) y cuantitativos (encuesta). Los principales resultados de la investigación apuntan a un aumento de la autoestima de ellos y, al mismo tiempo, la existencia, por razones económicas y de clase, a las tensiones entre ellos y los estudiantes non cuotistas y especialmente los profesores de los cursos más prestigiosos.

No século XIX, ocorre um significativo aumento nas viagens, especialmente devido à inovação na tecnologia dos meios de transporte. Esse desenvolvimento é acompanhado pela produção e pelo consumo de literatura relacionada ao tema. Igualmente na literatura contemporânea os relatos de viagens são recorrentes. O presente artigo tem como objetivo abordar as reportagens e os relatos que compõem Der gelbe Bleistift (O lápis amarelo), do autor suíço Christian Kracht, fazendo um contraponto com a literatura de viagem do século XIX. A literatura de viagem ao longo dos séculos não perdeu seu fascínio, contribuindo para ampliar os horizontes dos leitores, mas também para que eles questionem seus próprios valores sob a perspectiva de um olhar distanciado de sua realidade.

In the XIX century, occurs a significant increase in the trips, especially due to the innovation in technology of the means of transportation. That development is followed by the production and by the consumption of literature related to the theme. Likewise in the contemporary literature the travelogues are recurring. The present article aims to approach the reports and stories that compose Der gelbe Bleistift (The yellow pencil), by the swiss author Christian Kracht, making a counterpoint with the travel literature of the XIX century. Among the centuries travel literature didn't lose it's fascination, contributing to enlarge the horizons of the readers, but also to question their own values under a perspective of a detached look of their own reality.

This review aims to provide clinicians in Latin America with the most current information on the clinical aspects, diagnosis, and management of Hunter syndrome, a serious and progressive disease for which specific treatment is available. Hunter syndrome is a genetic disorder where iduronate-2-sulfatase (I2S), an enzyme that degrades glycosaminoglycans, is absent or deficient. Clinical manifestations vary widely in severity and involve multiple organs and tissues. An attenuated and a severe phenotype are recognized depending on the degree of cognitive impairment. Early diagnosis is vital for disease management. Clinical signs common to children with Hunter syndrome include inguinal hernia, frequent ear and respiratory infections, facial dysmorphisms, macrocephaly, bone dysplasia, short stature, sleep apnea, and behavior problems. Diagnosis is based on screening urinary glycosaminoglycans and confirmation by measuring I2S activity and analyzing I2S gene mutations. Idursulfase (recombinant I2S) (Elaprase®, Shire) enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), designed to address the underlying enzyme deficiency, is approved treatment and improves walking capacity and respiratory function, and reduces spleen and liver size and urinary glycosaminoglycan levels. Additional measures, responding to the multi-organ manifestations, such as abdominal/inguinal hernia repair, carpal tunnel surgery, and cardiac valve replacement, should also be considered. Investigational treatment options such as intrathecal ERT are active areas of research, and bone marrow transplantation is in clinical practice. Communication among care providers, social workers, patients and families is essential to inform and guide their decisions, establish realistic expectations, and assess patients' responses.

Descreve-se a epidemiologia da morte de suínos ocorrida entre 2002 e 2009 pela ingestão da neurotoxina botulínica do tipo C. A neurotoxina presente em resíduos de alimentos provenientes de cozinhas de restaurantes e hotéis, armazenados em tonéis sem abrigo do sol e administrado em cocho coletivo sem tratamento térmico prévio. Animais de diferentes idades morreram com sinais clínicos de botulismo caracterizados por paralisia flácida, emagrecimento, anorexia, fraqueza, incoordenação, dificuldade de locomoção com evolução para decúbito lateral com micção e defecação involuntárias. Nenhuma alteração evidente foi observada na necropsia e no exame histológico. O teste de bioensaio com soroneutralização em camundongos foi realizado com amostras de conteúdo intestinal dos animais afetados e alimentos e revelou a presença de grandes quantidades de toxina botulínica do tipo C.

The paper addresses the epidemiologic data of the death of pigs during the period of 2002 to 2009 following the ingestion of botulinum neurotoxin type C. This neurotoxin was present in food residues originating from restaurant and hotel kitchens, stored in barrels without shelter from the sun and administered in a collective trough without prior thermal treatment. Animals which died at different ages showed clinical signs of botulism characterized by flaccid paralysis, weight loss, anorexia, weakness, lack of coordination, locomotion difficulties with the evolution of lateral recumbency with involuntary urination and defecation. No alterations were observed at postmortem and histological examination. The bioassay with serum neutralization in mice was carried out on samples of intestinal contents from pigs affected and revealed the presence of large quantities of botulinum toxin type C.

Recentemente, técnicas não destrutivas como a espectroscopia Vis/NIR têm sido utilizadas para avaliar as características de maturação e qualidade das peras. O trabalho tem como objetivo validar as leituras por espectroscopia Vis/NIR, como forma não destrutiva de avaliar as características qualitativas em peras das cultivares Williams, Packams e Carrick produzidas em condições brasileiras. O experimento foi realizado na Universidade Federal de Pelotas, UFPel, Pelotas/RS e o instrumento utilizado para determinar a qualidade dos frutos de forma não destrutiva foi o espectrofotômetro NIR-Case (SACMI, Imola, Itália). Para a determinação de sólidos solúveis (SS) e firmeza da polpa (FP) das peras, estabeleceu se a calibração para cada cultivar em estudo a partir das avaliações obtidas pelo método não destrutivo (NIR-Case) e pelo método destrutivo e, posteriormente, testou-se o desempenho destas leituras através de regressões lineares. Os resultados foram significativos para o parâmetro sólidos solúveis obtido por espectroscopia Vis/NIR, no entanto, não se obteve resultados satisfatórios para a firmeza da polpa de peras dessas cultivares. Conclui-se que a espectroscopia Vis/NIR utilizando regressão linear possibilita fornecer estimativas seguras dos índices de qualidade para peras, especialmente para os sólidos solúveis.

Recently, non-destructive techniques such as the Vis / NIR spectroscopy have been used to evaluate the characteristics of maturation and quality of pears. The study aims to validate the readings by the Vis / NIR spectroscopy as a non-destructive way to assess the qualitative characteristics of pear cultivars 'Williams', 'Packams' and 'Carrick', produced according to Brazilian conditions. The experiment was conducted at the Pelotas Federal University, UFPel, in Pelotas / RS, and the instrument used to measure the fruit quality in a non-destructive way was the NIR- Case spectrophotometer (SACMI, Imola, Italy). To determine pears' soluble solids (SS) and pulp firmness (PF), it was established calibration equations for each variety studied, done from the evaluations obtained by a non-destructive method (NIR-Case) and a destructive method. Further on, it was tested the performance of these readings by linear regressions. The results were significant for the soluble solids parameter obtained by the Vis / NIR spectroscopy; however, it did not achieve satisfactory results for the pear pulp firmness of these cultivars. It is concluded that the Vis / NIR spectroscopy, using linear regression, allows providing reliable estimates of pears' quality levels, especially for soluble solids.

A pimenta-longa (Piper hispidinervium C. DC.) é uma planta nativa caracterizada pela produção de safrol, um metabólito secundário usado na produção de perfumes, cosméticos e inseticidas. Neste trabalho avaliou-se o uso potencial da tecnologia de sementes sintéticas como alternativa à propagação in vitro de pimenta-longa. Foi estudada a influência da constituição da cápsula sobre a formação e conversão in vitrode unidades encapsuláveis. Sementes pré-germinadas de pimenta-longa com 21 dias de cultivo em meio de cultura de MS foram utilizadas como material de encapsulamento. A concentração de alginato de sódio utilizada na matriz de encapsulamento foi de 1,5% (p/v) e a esta consistência se testou na água e o meio de MS nas concentrações plena (100%), 3/4 (75%) e 1/2 (50%) dos sais e vitaminas, associado ou não a carvão ativado (3 g L-1) como elementos da cápsula. Após encapsulamento, os cultivos foram mantidos em sala de crescimento a 25±2ºC, fotoperíodo de 16 horas e intensidade luminosa de 30 mmol m-2 s-1, onde a taxa de conversão e a altura das plantas foram avaliadas quinzenalmente até 30 dias de cultivo. O delineamento utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, em fatorial 2 x 4, com cinco repetições e dez unidades encapsuláveis por parcela. Verificou-se que o emprego de um endosperma sintético constituído por 3/4 dos sais e vitaminas de MS, acrescido de carvão ativado (3 g L-1) (85,8% de taxa de conversão) ou a utilização de MS pleno, independente do uso de carvão ativado (76,5%) promoveram as melhores taxas de conversão de sementes sintéticas de pimenta-longa. A altura das plantas não foi afetada pelas concentrações de MS e adição de carvão ativado à cápsula.

Long pepper (Piper hispidinervumC. DC.) is a native plant characterized by the production of safrol, a secondary metabolite used in the production of perfumes, cosmetics and insecticides. In the present work the potential use of synthetic seeds technology as an alternative to in vitropropagation of long pepper was evaluated. The influence of capsule constitution on formation and conversion of in vitroencapsulated units was also studied. Long pepper pre-germinated 21-day old seeds were used as material for encapsulation. The concentration of sodium alginate used in the encapsulation matrix was 1,5% (p/v) and this consistency was tested in water or MS at full (100%), 3/4 (75%) and ½ (50%) concentration of salt and vitamins, associated or not to active charcoal (3 g L-1), as nutritional elements of the capsule. After encapsulation, cultures were maintained in a growth room at 25±2ºC and a photoperiod of 16 h at 30 mmol m-2s-1, where the conversion rate and height of the plants were evaluated for a month. The experimental design was of randomized blocks arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, with five replicates and ten encapsulated units for replicate. It was verified that The employment of a synthetic endosperm constituted by MS at ¾ concentration, enriched with active charcoal (3 g L-1) (85.8% of conversion) or MS at full concentration, independently of active charcoal (76.5%), promoted the best results on the conversion of synthetic seeds of long pepper. The height of the plants was not affected by the MS concentrations and addition of active charcoal to the capsule.

OBJETIVOS: traçar o perfil nutricional de crianças em creches de Brasília, DF, para subsidiar a formulação de estratégias de atendimento e controle dos problemas detectados. MÉTODOS: estudo transversal realizado de março a dezembro de 2001, constante de entrevista sobre a situação socioeconômica das famílias, avaliação antropométrica de 230 crianças (87,5% do total de 263) pelos critérios da OMS e padrão do NCHS e análise do consumo alimentar, por meio de pesagem direta, recordatório 24 horas e freqüência de consumo. RESULTADOS: observaram-se 6,1% de excesso de peso e 4,8% de déficit de estatura. A alimentação das creches apresentou adequada distribuição do percentual de energia proveniente dos macronutrientes. Houve diferença significante entre as faixas etárias, para energia, proteína, ferro, cálcio e vitamina C. O perfil de consumo habitual apresentou-se alto em produtos lácteos, arroz/macarrão, feijão, açúcar, pães e margarina; consumo médio de frutas, hortaliças, carne bovina, frango, ovos, biscoito; baixo consumo de peixes,vísceras sucos/chás e leite materno; além da introdução precoce de snack, refrigerante, fast food, enlatados/embutidos e doces/guloseimas. CONCLUSÕES: a ocorrência de excesso de peso acima do esperado na curva normal pode refletir o padrão alimentar, indicando a necessidade de intervenções de educação e saúde, para prevenir doenças crônicas não transmissíveis e melhorar a qualidade vida.

OBJECTIVES: to assess nutritional status of children in three nursing schools of Brasília, Brazil. METHODS: in a cross-sectional design, a sample of 230 children (87.5% of 263) was evaluated between March and December of 2001. Interview was used to gather family socio-economic status. Children nutritional status was classified according to WHO using NCHS tables. Food intake was obtained by direct weighed food, 24h-recall and food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS: there were a 6.1% overweight and 4.8% stunting. Meals served in the nursing schools provided adequate energy percentage distribution for macronutrients. There were significant differences between children under and over 24 months old for total energy, protein, iron, calcium, and vitamin C. There was a high intake of dairy products, rice/pasta, legumes, table sugar, bread and margarine; medium intake of fruits, vegetables, red meat, poultry, eggs and cookies; and low intake o fish, offals, juices, tea and human milk. A precocious introduction of snacks, soft drinks, fast foods, canned and processed meat and sweet was observed. CONCLUSIONS: there was a high prevalence of excessive weight, which is consistent with the observed food intake pattern. It is concluded that educational and health interventions are needed to prevent non-transmissible chronic diseases and to improve life quality.

OBJETIVOS: comparar o custo da alimentação complementar da nutriz em relação à alimentação do bebê com substitutos do leite materno. MÉTODOS: o custo do gasto energético da lactação foi calculado com a adição de um ou dois alimentos da dieta habitual para suprir a demanda extra da lactante. Foram elaborados e calculados cardápios adicionais para a nutriz, e estimado o custo da alimentação com fórmula infantil e com leite de vaca tipo C para lactentes menores de seis meses, segundo recomendações nutricionais para essas fases da vida, para um consumo de seis meses. Determinou-se a porcentagem de salário mínimo gasto com cada tipo de alimentação. RESULTADOS: observou-se que a alimentação complementar da nutriz custa em média 8,7% do salário mínimo. Gasta-se aproximadamente 35% do salário mínimo na alimentação do bebê com fórmula infantil e 11% com leite de vaca tipo C. CONCLUSÕES: os resultados apontam que é mais barato e eficaz garantir a complementação alimentar de nutrizes carentes, para se promover a amamentação, que distribuir fórmulas ou leites, e favorecer o desmame precoce.

OBJECTIVES: to compare supplementary food cost of nursing mothers related to breast feeding with breast milk substitutes. METHODS: the cost of energy spent during lactation was calculated with the addition of one or two types of food of the usual diet to supply the extra demand of a nursing baby. Menus were designed and calculated for the mothers and food cost estimated as well as the cost of baby formulas and type C cow milk for children under six months of age according to nutritional recommendations for this phase of life considering a six month consumption period. Percentage of minimum wage spent with each type of food was determined. RESULTS: supplementary food offered to mothers has an average cost of 8.7% of the minimum wage. Approximately 35% of the minimum wage is spent in feeding the baby with formulas and 11% with type C cow milk. CONCLUSIONS: these values, similar to other surveys indicate the supplementary food aiming at promoting breast feeding is more cost-effective than maternal milk substitutes. The results indicate that it is cheaper and more efficient to assure supplementary food to poor nursing mothers to promote breast feeding than to distribute formulas or milk that induce early weaning.

It is generally accepted that mitochondria are able to proliferate even in postmitotic cells due to their natural turnover and also to satisfy increased cell energy requirements. However, no detailed studies are available, particularly with respect to specific cell types. Since [3H]-thymidine is incorporated not only into nuclear (n) DNA but also into the DNA of cytoplasmic mitochondria, an autoradiographic approach was developed at the light microscopy level in order to study basic questions of mitochondrial (mt) proliferation in organs of rodents in situ via the cytoplasmic incorporation of [3H]-thymidine injected into the animals 1 h before sacrifice. Experiments carried out on mice after X-irradiation showed that cytoplasmic labeling was not due to a process such as unscheduled nuclear DNA synthesis (nUDS). Furthermore, half-lives of mitochondria between 8-23 days were deduced specifically in relation to cell types. The phase of mtDNA synthesis was about 75 min. Finally, mt proliferation was measured in brain cells of mice as a function of age. While all neurons showed a decreasing extent of mtDNA synthesis during old age, nUDS decreased only in distinct cell types of the cortex and hippocampus. We conclude that the leading theories explaining the phenomenon of aging are closely related, i.e., aging is due to a decreasing capacity of nDNA repair, which leads to unrepaired nDNA damage, or to an accumulation of mitochondria with damaged mtDNA, which leads to a deficit of cellular energy production
