In this article, it is described the main aspects to be considered during the process of scaling up hard sciences technologies developed in the Science and Technology Institutes aiming at industrial application. Based on the experience of our group in scaling up, pre-acceleration, and acceleration of different technologies, a methodology was developed and divided into four main stages: Step 1, which involves basic research, Step 2 with a focus on product development, and Step 3 with a focus on process development, all on the laboratory scale and the last one, Step 4 focused on pilot plant development. The most important aspect of this article is to show that many critical questions can be answered even in the laboratory phase. In this way, the risks of Step 4 are minimized. Step 4 is a complicated, lengthy, and expensive process of construction and operation of a pilot plant. Aspects such as proof of concept, technical and economic feasibility studies, minimum viable product, capital expenditures, and operating expenses of pilot plants are approached in a simplified way to serve as a basis for researchers who wants to know the long path to be followed by technology before reaching the industry, consequently the market.

Abstract Objectives This study aims to assess the impact of social isolation, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, on mental health, Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and orofacial pain in men and women. Methodology Individuals living in Brazil answered an online questionnaire on their sociodemographic and behavioral aspects, emotional scale (DASS-21), Impact of Event Scale, and Pain Screener in Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD-Pain Screener) during June 2020. Descriptive statistical analyses and logistic and linear regressions were applied (5% significance). Results Overall, 2301 individuals were included, 89.1% practiced social isolation, 72.6% were employed/studying, at least 15% presented severe or extremely severe levels of emotional distress and presence of powerful (34.1%) and severe impact event (15%). During the outbreak, 53.2% perceived feeling worse and 31.8% reported that orofacial pain started or worsened after the pandemic outbreak. Gender was associated with “social class” (P=0.036), “pain/stiffness in the jaw on awakening” (P=0.037), “change of pain during jaw habits” (P=0.034) and “perception of change in the situations mentioned in the TMD-Pain Screener” (P=0.020), “depression” (P=0.012), “anxiety” (P=0.006) and “impact of the event” (P=8.3E-11). Social isolation had a lesser chance to change the routine, to be practiced by the unemployed/not studying, and to be practiced by men (all with P<0.001). Associations were found between social class and all subscales of the DASS-21 and IES, all with P<0.001. Conclusions The practice of social isolation has social determinants. High levels of psychological and event impacts were detected. The presence of orofacial pain seemed to increase during the health crisis, and there were gender differences in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Resumo: Introdução: A extensão universitária com populações excluídas socialmente pode ser uma estratégia na formação de profissionais sobre a diversidade cultural e social brasileira. A perspectiva da Educação Popular em Saúde (EPS) nesse contexto é uma das possibilidades para fomentar interações dialógicas entre ensino e comunidade, favorecendo espaço para o desenvolvimento da formação em saúde com compromisso social. O Projeto de Extensão Îandé Gûatá surge em 2013, na Paraíba, a partir dos princípios da EPS e da Extensão Popular, com foco no encontro entre indígenas Potiguara e estudantes de Medicina. Esta pesquisa objetivou avaliar os aprendizados construídos pelos extensionistas desse projeto em sua formação médica. Método: Para tanto, desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa com abordagem qualitativa a partir dos referenciais teórico-metodológicos das práticas discursivas. Utilizou-se a técnica da roda de conversa para construção de dados, realizada no momento de encerramento do ciclo do projeto. Para análise do material, foram identificados repertórios linguísticos a partir das falas dos sujeitos com construção de três conjuntos de sentidos: a extensão universitária como espaço contra-hegemônico de formação médica; o desenvolvimento de competências gerais para o futuro profissional de saúde; o encontro entre diferentes culturas nas vivências da extensão. Os repertórios linguísticos foram discutidos com base em referenciais teóricos de EPS, saúde indígena e competências na educação médica. Resultados: Nas falas dos estudantes, o projeto permitiu ganhos nos seguintes atributos: conhecimento, porque permitiu reflexões, identificação de lacunas e maior entendimento sobre o processo saúde-doença no contexto da população indígena; habilidades de fazer e receber críticas, de trabalho em equipe e de diálogo entre culturas diferentes; e atitudes, ampliando a postura do profissionalismo, a compreensão e a ação perante as questões éticas e sociais. Conclusões: Dessa forma, destacam não somente o desenvolvimento de competências gerais para o futuro médico, mas também as mais específicas, como a competência cultural. Além disso, enfatizam o desafio de dialogar na polaridade, de modo a diminuir as distâncias dentro do mesmo espaço institucional e do conflito cultural, e promover a compreensão e ação numa educação emancipatória. Esse coletivo de estudantes esperançou com a comunidade indígena a aproximação dessas distâncias, num compromisso coletivo de produzir mudança e transformação social.

Abstract: Introduction: University extension projects with socially excluded populations can be a strategy for the training of professionals in the cultural and social diversity of the Brazilian population. The practice of Popular Health Education (PHE) through university extension is one of the possibilities to foster dialogic interactions between teaching and the community and has been a space for the development of health education with social commitment. The Îandé Gûatá Extension Project was created in Paraíba in 2013, based on the principles of PHE and Popular Extension, focusing on the meeting between Potiguara indigenous people and Medical students. This study aimed to evaluate the learning built by this project students’ for their medical education. Method: Therefore, a qualitative approach research was developed through the analysis of discursive practices, using the talking circle technique at the end of the project cycle. To analyze the material, linguistic repertoires were identified from the subjects’ speech and three sets of meanings were built: extension university as a counter-hegemonic space of medical education; building skills for the future doctor; relations between health and culture in care. The linguistic repertoires were discussed based on theoretical references, such as popular health education, indigenous health and competences in medical education. Results: According to the students, this project allowed them gains in the attributes of: knowledge, as it allowed reflections, identification of gaps and greater understanding about the health-disease process in the context of the indigenous population; allowed gains in the ability of making and receiving criticism, teamwork and dialogue between different cultures; and allowed gains in attitudes, broadening the attitude of professionalism, the comprehension and performance on ethical issues and the construction of social commitment. Conclusion: Therefore, they highlight both the development of general competences for the future doctor, but also more specific ones, such as cultural competence. Moreover, the challenge of dialoguing in the polarity: aiming to reduce the distances within the same institutional space; cultural conflicts; and understanding and acting in an emancipatory education. This group of students wished, with the indigenous community, that these distances would be lessened, in a collective commitment aimed at producing change and social transformation.

Resumo Introdução: A Fotobiomodulação (FBM) auxilia nos processos de angiogênese e mitose celular após lesão cutânea, contribuindo para reparo do tecido. Objetivo: investigar os efeitos da fotobiomodulação (durante a fase proliferativa) com comprimento de onda de 658 nm, 830 nm e 904 nm no reparo de lesões cutâneas em modelo animal. Método: FBM 658 nm (G658), 830 nm (G830), 904 nm (G904) e controle (GC) integraram a pesquisa. Os animais foram submetidos a uma ferida excisional e receberam tratamento em diferentes comprimentos de por 14 dias. No 7º e 14º dia pós-operatório, calculou-se a área e a porcentagem de contração da lesão. Os animais foram sacrificados no 14º dia pós-operatório e a secção cutânea da região lesada foi coletada para avaliação histomorfométrica da celularidade, neovascularização, espessura da epiderme e densidade volumétrica das fibras colágenas, corados com H&E e Picross Sirius respectivamente. Para a análise estatística, foi aplicado o teste ANOVA. Resultados: o G658 apresentou maior celularidade que GC (p = 0,03). Os animais do grupo G658 apresentaram aumento significativo da neovascularização em relação ao GC (p = 0,01). Houve aumento significativo do colágeno tipo III no G904 em relação ao G830 (p < 0,0001) e GC (p < 0,0001). O G658 teve um aumento significativo nas fibras colágenas tipo III em comparação ao G830 (p < 0,0001) e GC (p < 0,0001). Nenhuma diferença significativa foi encontrada na espessura da epiderme, área da ferida e na porcentagem de contração da ferida entre os grupos analisados. Conclusão: a PBM foi efetiva para estimular o processo de reparo tecidual, com melhores resultados para o comprimento de onda de 658 nm.

Abstract Introduction: Photobiomodulation (PBM) assists in the processes of angiogenesis and cellular mitosis after skin lesion, contributing to tissue repair. Objective: to investigate the effects of photobiomodulation (during the proliferative phase) of 658 nm, 830 nm and 904 nm in the repair of skin lesions in an animal model. Method: 658 nm (G658), 830 nm (G830), 904 nm (G904) PBM, and control group (CG) integrated the research. We submitted the animals to an excisional wound and treatment at different wavelengths for 14 days. On the seventh and 14-1485004059th postoperative days, we calculated the area and percentage of lesion contraction. The animals were sacrificed on the 14-1485004056th postoperative day and cutaneous section of the injured region was collected for histomorphometric evaluation of the cellularity, neovascularization, thickness of the epidermis and volume density of collagen fibers colored with H&E and Picross Sirius respectively. For the statistical analysis, we applied the ANOVA test. Results: the G658 presented higher cellularity than GC (p = 0.03). The animals in the G658 group showed a significant increase in the neovascularization in relation to the CG (p = 0.01). Type III collagen significantly increased in G904 compared to G830 (p < 0.0001) and CG (p < 0.0001). The G658 had a significant increase in type III collagen fibers compared to G830 (p < 0.0001) and GC (p < 0.0001). We found no significant difference in the thickness of the epidermis, wound area, and in the percentage wound of contraction between the analyzed groups. Conclusion: PBM was effective to stimulate the tissue repair process, with better results for the 658 nm wavelength.

Resumen Introducción: La fotobiomodulación (FBM) auxilia en los procesos de angiogénesis y mitosa celular después de lesión cutánea, contribuyendo para la reparación. Objetivo: investigar los efectos de la fotobiomodulación (durante la fase proliferativa) con longitud de onda de 658 nm, 830 nm y 904 nm en la reparación de lesiones cutáneas en modelo animal. Método: grupos de FBM 658 nm (G658), 830 nm (G830), 904 nm (G904) y control (GC) integraron la investigación. Los animales fueron sometidos a una herida excisional y recibieron tratamiento 14 días. En el 7º y 14º día postoperatorio, se calculó el área y el porcentaje de contracción de la lesión. Los animales fueron sacrificados en el 14º día postoperatorio y la sección cutánea de la región lesada fue recolectada para evaluación histomorfométrica de la celularidad, neovascularización, espesor de la epidermis y densidad volumétrica de las fibras colágenas, colorados con H & E y Picross Sirius respectivamente. Para el análisis estadístico, se aplicó la prueba ANOVA. Resultados: G658 presentó mayor celularidad que GC (p = 0,03). G658 presentaron un aumento significativo de la neovascularización en relación al GC (p = 0,01). Se observó un aumento significativo del colágeno tipo III en el G904 con respecto al G830 (p < 0,0001) y GC (p < 0,0001). El G658 tuvo un aumento significativo en las fibras colágenas tipo III en comparación con el G830 (p < 0,0001) y GC (p < 0,0001). Ninguna diferencia significativa se encontró en el espesor de la epidermis, área de la herida entre los grupos. Conclusión: la PBM fue efectiva para estimular el proceso de reparación del tejido, con mejores resultados para grupo 658 nm.

Resumo O fungo Corynespora cassiicola, agente causal da mancha alvo em soja, pode ser transmitido por sementes de soja e a partir daí causar danos severos. A diagnose precoce desta doença pode ser realizada por meio de testes de sementes, cujo conhecimento é insuficiente. Por esta razão e pelo aumento da área de soja atacada pela referida doença no Brasil, estudos mais aprofundados são necessários. Neste trabalho, o objetivo foi avaliar o uso da técnica PCR convencional na detecção de C. cassiicola em amostras de sementes de soja. Os primers GA4-F/GA4-R, relatados na literatura, foram testados para verificar a sua especificidade e sensibilidade para detecção de C. cassiicola em cultura pura e em sementes de soja. Foram utilizadas amostras de sementes, inoculadas e não inoculadas, com diferentes níveis de incidência, de 100%, 10%, 1%, 0,5%, 0,25% e 0%, por potenciais de inóculo preestabelecidos, P0, P1, P2 e P3. A detecção de C. cassiicola no potencial de inóculo P1, foi observada em amostras com níveis de incidência de 10% a 100%. No potencial P3, a detecção do patógeno foi bem-sucedida em amostras com nível mínimo de 0,25%.

Abstract The fungus Corynespora cassiicola, causal agent of target spot in soybeans, can be transmitted by soybean seeds and as of that point cause severe damage. This disease may be diagnosed at an early stage by seed testing, but knowledge in this area is insufficient. Because of that and increased attack by the disease in soybean areas in Brazil, further studies are required. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of conventional PCR in detecting C. cassiicola in soybean seeds. The GA4-F/GA4-R primers described in the literature were tested for their specificity and sensitivity for detection of C. cassiicola in pure culture and in soybean seeds. Uninoculated and inoculated seed samples were used with different incidence levels - 100%, 10%, 1%, 0.5%, 0.25%, and 0% of preestablished inoculum potentials, P0, P1, P2, and P3. Detection of C. cassiicola in P1 inoculum potential was observed in samples with incidence levels of 10% to 100%. In the P3 potential, detection of the pathogen was successful in samples at the low level of 0.25%.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar por meio de questionário, qual o grau de dificuldade para aplicação tópica de medicações oculares, com ou sem o auxílio do apoio facial. Observar qual método foi tecnicamente melhor utilizado para aplicação de drogas tópicas oculares. MÉTODOS: O estudo foi um ensaio clínico controlado e randomizado, realizado em 50 pacientes no decorrer de 2009 e 2010 na Unidade de Saúde da Família - Lapa. Foi utilizado um frasco de colírio Oftane® e o mesmo foi acoplado ao dispositivo de apoio facial. Cada participante aplicou em cada um dos olhos, a solução com ou sem o uso do dispositivo, sendo que a seleção foi feita através de um processo randomizado. Foi perguntado ao paciente questões pré-formuladas sobre a praticidade de ambos os métodos. RESULTADOS: Considerando o grau de dificuldade de administração tópica ocular: 12% acharam difícil ou muito difícil a aplicação com o objeto de apoio facial e 22% sem o apoio (p=0,0024). As dificuldades descritas pelos pacientes foram relatadas por 22 % dos pacientes para aplicação com o dispositivo de apoio facial e por 46% para aplicação sem o mesmo. Já 34% dos pacientes necessitaram de mais de uma instilação para aplicação do colírio sem o apoio, enquanto que 54% dos pacientes precisaram de mais de uma aplicação para que a gota atingisse o olho com o auxílio do apoio facial (p= 0,04). Em 56% dos pacientes houve toque da ponta do colírio com os tecidos oculares, quando o objeto de apoio facial não foi usado, porém quando ele foi utilizado, apenas 2% dos pacientes observados tocaram os tecidos oculares (p=0,0001). CONCLUSÃO: É mais fácil a instilação de colírios com o auxílio do dispositivo de apoio facial. Este também dificulta o contato da ponta do frasco com os tecidos oculares, prevenindo a contaminação do frasco.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate how difficult it is to apply ocular topical medications with and without an eye dropper facial applicator based on patient observation and answers to a questionnaire. METHODS: The study was a controlled and randomized clinical trial performed in 50 patients during the years of 2009 and 2010 in PSF - Lapa. Eye drops were applied with and without aid of an eye dropper facial applicator. Each individual tested applied randomly on one of their eyes an eye drop with or without the applicator. The patients had to answer questions about the practice concerning both forms of topical eye drug application. RESULTS: 12% informed that it was difficult or very difficult to instill eye drops and 22% to instill eye drops helped by an eye dropper facial applicator (0,0024). Problems described by patients were considered by 22% for eye drops with the applicator and by 46% for topical eye drop instillation without it. 34% of the patients needed more than one eye drop application to have eye drop contact , while 54% of the patients needed more than one application with the eye drop facial applicator in order to get drug eye contact (p= 0,04). In 56% of patients there were an eyedropper tip contact with ocular tissues, however there was only 2% of contact when the eye drop was instilled aided by the applicator (p=0,0001). CONCLUSION: It is easier to instill an eye drop with the help of an eye dropper applicator than without it. This dispositive also reduces the eyedropper tip contact with the ocular tissues.
