Medical Education and New Scenarios for Teaching/Learning

Abstract:

This article deals with the integration of Medical School in several teaching-learning scenarios in light of the inadequacy and insufficiency of course contents, to the extent that Medical School trains physicians who are unprepared to treat health system clients in non-hospital settings and are estranged from society's health needs. The article expounds on proposals for new settings for practices in medical education based on the position of official agencies, including the Brazilian Association for Medical Education (ABEM), Inter-Institutional Commíssion for the Evaluation of Medical Education (CINAEM), the Ministries of Education and Health, and the Pan-Ameriam Health Organization (PAHO), in the sense of including Medical Schools in the discussions on a new health care model for the Brazilian population. In this process of integration with the schools, the United National Health System (SUS) plays a central role as a setting, through the networlk of health care units. University extension activitics linking teaching and research also provide contact between faculty and students and various social realities. The article goes on to discuss experiences developed by several Medical Schools in Brazil in various settings, such as schools and primary health care services. The authors conclude by presenting their curricular experience with the integration of teaching and health services at UNIGRANRIO in the municipality of Duque de Caxias in Rio de Janeiro state.
