Translingual travels in the poetics of Sousândrade, Haroldo de Campos, Douglas Diegues and Josely Vianna Baptista

Abstract

In this article, from the focus on the theme of travel, present in important poetic texts marked by translingualism, belonging to different moments of Brazilian literature, I discuss the aesthetic-critical function of the crossings between different languages and strategies of imagery composition in the process of questioning and deconstruction of hegemonic identity discourses. My analysis comparatively runs through the oeuvres: O Guesa, by Sousândrade, a nineteenth-century writer silenced for several decades, whose text shapes the idea of a trans-American pilgrimage; Galáxias, by Haroldo de Campos, an author who, in addition to contributing to the recovery of Sousândrade in the literary canon through the concretist perspective, combines in this book the idea of travel with formal experimentation and linguistic hybridism; El astronauta paraguayo, by Douglas Diegues, a poet who invests in a radical and parodic way in the disarticulation of national and idiomatic borders between Brazil and Paraguay; and Nada está fora do lugar, by Josely Vianna Baptista, a writer who activates the procedures of montage and translation in multiple languages, in a video poem based on the issue of Guarani nomadism.
