Abstract

This article is part of the research on female participation in the History of Mathematics Education. It focuses on part of the professional trajectory of Professor Maria do Carmo Vila in Minas Gerais, especially during her time at Colégio Técnico, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). The study is based on interviews according to Oral History methodology and documents collected in a previous research. It deals with what Maria do Carmo and some of her colleagues remembered and told about their teaching practices during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Maria do Carmo stood out for her innovative actions at the time; for her academic formation, in a period when master and doctorate courses in Mathematics Education began to spread in Brazil; and for her involvement with teacher education. Several trends in the development of Mathematics Education in Brazil were noted in the practices of this teacher from 1970 to 1995. It is evident that Professor Maria do Carmo constituted herself professionally as an important reference for Mathematics teaching in Minas Gerais, as well as in other Brazilian states.
