this study provides an overview of fertility in the state of São Paulo and in the state's administrative zones with fertility rates below replacement level since 2000. Using birth certificates statistics from the Civil Registry, the essay analyzes how fertility rates and structures evolved during this period of falling rates. The reduced fertility occurred because of the rejuvenation of fertility, the reverse situation found in developed countries where fertility rates are very low.
