School environment and sexual diversity

The purpose of this article was to analyze sexual diversity and homophobia in the Portuguese educational environment, through a comparative study between the results of the 'Sexuality, Youth, and Adolescent Pregnancy in Northwestern Portugal' study and the existing data of the report on homophobia and transphobia from the 'GLBT Education Observatory'. Qualitative methodology was used in the first study, while quantitative methodology was used in the second. Both studies concluded that most young people present a negative attitude towards GLBT people, misinformation about sexual diversity, accompanied by a high diffusion of myths and stereotypes, which result in homophobic and sexist attitudes. School remains a privileged environment to the construction of identity, but it is unprepared to deal with the issue of sexual diversity; education concerning sexual-affective diversity is a task for everyone.
