Design and construction of an evaluation instrument of mathematical competence: Practical applicability of an expert assessment

Abstract

We approach one of the fundamental stages in the design and construction of any instrument of educational evaluation: the assessment carried out by a group of experts in the subject matter. The chart of specifications emerges as the suitable tool to develop an expert assessment that enables us, among other objectives, to estimate the index of content validity of each of the elements. For example, the developed process is explained to facilitate the construction of an instrument that evaluates mathematical competence. After an initial design of 64 items, 11 items were eliminated and multiple qualitative valuations were addressed to allow for the significant improvement of the instrument, after to the participation of 51 experts in the field of the mathematics. We obtained high content validity for the instrument, and most estimated indexes were higher than 80.
