The archive and the dream: the montage as a process of mediation in Sunless, by Chris Marker

In this article, we propose to reflect upon montage - and, more specifically, on the montage of archival footage - as a process of mediation between images and the viewer. To this end, we use Georges Didi-Huberman's ideas to reflect upon dream images and archival footage, both of which - in their own way - contain vestiges of memory and have a lacunary character. However, only when they are articulated in dreams or in montages - in the case of documentary cinema - do they convey a new meaning. An analysis is made of Chris Marker's film, which is composed of archival footage and readings of letters from a traveling cameraman, giving the narrative an imaginative character, an essential characteristic of recollections and memories.
