Democracy with limits: the trajectory of Oscar Dias Corrêa (1945-1966)

ABSTRACT

The article analyzes the limits of democracy in Brazil during the known República de 1946, the focus is to analyze the trajectory of the parliamentarian Oscar Dias Correa (UDN) from Minas Gerais, considering the social and political dynamics that mobilized the public debate at that time. Besides bibliograph, the text is based on many documents, as newspapers, memories, and annals of National Congress. The results show a complex personality, that defy the used classifications to explain the political field at that time because the character was a radical objector of JK and Jango, but he was a nationalist and he supported the social reforms, he had a strong legalist and democratic discourse, but, at the same time, he supported the coup of 1964. Finally, he has become opponent of new regime because its authoritarian profile.
