ABSTRACT
The text intends to debate the split in the Riograndense Republican Party (PRR) based on the case study of the shooting at Clube Pinheiro Machado, in Livramento, in 1910, with three dead, the apex of the conflict that opposed the Flores da Cunha and Pereira de Souza families, the unfolding of which had repercussions in Rio de Janeiro and reached the politics of Uruguay. Thus, we seek to understand the causes of the conflict, as well as the context in which it was inscribed, a zone of indistinction between public and private space, typical of the coronelista power system. It is an attempt to perceive the involvement of the police and judicial authorities, their relationship with politics at several different, local to international, levels. In an explosive environment, issues such as the fight against smuggling or anticlerical conferences were instrumentalized by the factions, whose struggle was managed by the leader Borges de Medeiros, revealing a much less cohesive and disciplined party than the one identified by part of the historiography.
