ABSTRACT
For the discussion about intertextuality, term sometimes used instead of or as a synonym of dialogism, it is important to bring back the origins of the first term, which was conceived and diffused during the 1960's and 1970's, in France. Through this historical recall, we come to the position of some Brazilian scholars who have been studying Bakhtin's works. Some of them completely disagree with the use of the expression intertextuality (BEZERRA, 2011 [2010]), while others (try to understand it or) fit it in other theories (FIORIN, 2006). On the scope of these diverse positions, the intension of this article is to promote this discussion by bringing the proposal that the distinction between internal and external dialogical relationships can be a principle to distinguish dialogism and intertextuality. It will also allow us to reaffirm that intertextuality is not a suitable term to represent dialogism.
