Resumo em Inglês: Abstract A new species of Rineloricaria from the São João and Macaé river basins in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil is described. The new species is distinguished from most of its congeners by possessing of five series of lateral plates below the dorsal fin; mid-dorsal series consisting of four or five keeled plates extending posteriorly beyond the origin of the dorsal fin; pectoral girdle covered by plates; snout tip with naked area not reaching most anterior pore of infraorbital ramus of sensory canal; dorsal-fin spinelet present. The new species differs from R. zawadzkii, the most similar and geographically closest species, by having mid-ventral and lateral abdominal plates in contact (vs. separated by skin), the dorsal fin with a dark brown terminal band not reaching the edge, with inconspicuous dark dots along the lower edge (vs. band reaching the edge), and the caudal fin with a diffuse distal band with variegated white spots (vs. a well-defined distal band). The genetic distance based on cytochrome c oxidase I between the new species and the closest congeners supports its validity. The current distribution of the new species in the São João and Macaé basins is consistent with paleo-drainage connections influenced by sea-level fluctuations. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract This study tested the hypothesis that the silver arowana from different rivers in the Amazon basin is genetically structured, thus requiring differentiated management strategies to maintain stocks and continue economic activities. Such activities include artisanal fishing for food and predatory fishing for ornamental purposes, which has a major impact on the populations of the species, as it involves the death of adult males to capture the fry. Thus, the mitochondrial ATPase 6 gene of 397 silver arowana individuals was partial sequenced to analyze the genetic diversity. The results show that the genetic variability is greater in populations occurring to the west of the Amazon basin, suggesting that the origin of this diversity occurred in western Amazonia, with subsequent dispersal to the east of the basin. The observed population structure was oriented from west to east, likely due to isolation by distance. Therefore, these populations need to be managed and conserved in a differentiated and effective way, to preserve their local genetic characteristics. It is important to think about the short-term management of these populations, implementing conservation measures, such as fisheries management, specific legislation for the species and increased monitoring to prevent fishing for ornamental purposes during the species’ reproductive season. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Red Lists, which assess species’ extinction risk, are essential in formulating public policies for natural resources management and impact mitigation. The objective of this study was to characterize the conservation status of the continental ichthyofauna of the State of Ceará, based on ichthyological occurrence data and criteria from the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Eighty-five fish species belonging to 59 genera, 25 families, and eight orders were recorded in Ceará. Forty-three species were considered Least Concern, four Near Threatened, 17 were threatened, 15 were Data Deficient, and six species were not evaluated. Among the 17 species considered threatened, five were classified as Vulnerable, five as Endangered, and seven as Critically Endangered. The Metropolitan and Salgado basins presented the highest richness (44 and 39 species, respectively). In contrast, the Serra de Ibiapaba (6) and Curu (17) basins had the lowest richness, indicating wide variability among the evaluated basins. The basins with the highest relative number of threatened fish species were the Metropolitan, Litoral, and lower Jaguaribe basins. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted conservation actions to safeguard the freshwater fish diversity in Ceará, particularly in the basins with the highest number of threatened species. |

Original Article Taxonomy and morphology of three species of Psammobatis distributed in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (Rajiformes: Arhynchobatidae) with notes on intraspecific variation Santiago, Evelyn F. Soares, Karla D. A. Resumo em Português: Resumo O gênero Psammobatis é atualmente composto por sete espécies válidas e quatro delas são conhecidas por ocorrerem ao longo das costas sudeste e sul do Brasil (P. bergi, P. extenta, P. lentiginosa e P. rutrum). Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The genus Psammobatis is currently composed of seven valid species and four of these are known to occur along the southeastern and southern coasts of Brazil (P. bergi, P. extenta, P. lentiginosa, and P. rutrum). The differentiation among the last three species is still problematic since identification keys and species description are ambiguous and do not consider the influence of secondary sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic variation on morphological characters. This study aimed to investigate the external and internal morphology of P. extenta, P. lentiginosa, and P. rutrum, redescribing these species and illustrating characters useful to their distinction. Coloration pattern, dermal denticles, neurocranium and clasper morphology, disc shape, morphometric and meristic data were analyzed. The morphometric data showed 10 significant measurements to distinguish P. lentiginosa from P. extenta and 12 measurements to distinguish it from P. rutrum. For P. extenta and P. rutrum, six measurements with significant differences were observed, concentrated in disc and snout regions, and eye diameter. Psammobatis rutrum and P. lentiginosa are distinguished by their tail region, snout shape and mouth. Evidence of sexual dimorphism was observed in the three species regarding measurements related to head and disc shape. Lastly, an identification key is provided to the Brazilian species of Psammobatis. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract This study evaluated the ecomorphological patterns of fish assemblages in oligotrophic headwater streams of northwestern Amazonia. Our aims were: 1) identify correlations between morphological variables of fish species and habitat use, trophic structure and distance to the main river; 2) examine ecomorphological patterns that reflect ecological aspects of locomotion, habitat use and trophic ecology. A total of 34 species were analyzed using 27 ecomorphological indices to test if they were related to fish assemblage. Significant correlations were found between anatomical traits and trophic guilds and habitat use regardless of phylogenetic relationships. Two trends were identified in the ecomorphological space. First, nektonic insectivores-piscivores with lateral compressed bodies, large eyes, superior-terminal mouth without barbels and larger anal fins were associated to species with continuous swimming, and the use of vision to capture prey. Second, benthic periphytivores-invertivores with depressed bodies, small eyes, ventral or inferior mouth with presence of barbels, and developed pectoral fins were related to species that exploit streams substrate. This study shows that fish assemblages in the oligotrophic headwater streams are ecomorphologically structured by trophic guilds and habitat use. These findings highlight the use of ecomorphology as a tool to predict ecological patterns in these streams. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The Volta Grande do Xingu, one of the most important refuges of freshwater fish diversity in the Amazon, hosts a complex ecosystem where endemic species of Hypancistrus, such as H. zebra, H.seideli, and H.yudja, coexist sharing the same habitat. The drastic environmental changes caused by the construction of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant and the severe droughts experienced in recent years, exacerbated by climate change, have fragmented their habitats and might be increasing contact between these three species. Using geometric morphometrics, this study reveals a concerning morphological overlap between H.seideli and H.yudja which indicates hybridization in impacted areas and threatens to dilute the unique genetic characteristics of these parental species. In contrast, H. zebra remained morphologically distinct, reinforcing its status as a highly vulnerable species. Hybridization poses a threat to the genetic integrity of the parent species and may accelerate the decline of already endangered species in this rapidly degrading environment. These findings are crucial for guiding conservation strategies and understanding the complex diversification processes in the rio Xingu. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The conservation of biodiversity includes the maintenance of genetic variation and evolutionary processes. Consequently, identifying evolutionarily significant genetic lineages within exploited species can benefit the development of conservation management strategies. With the absence of genetic data life history traits are sometimes assumed to be good predictors of genetic patterns in natural populations. Here we used DNA sequences of cytochrome oxidase I and cytochrome b to test the effects of geographical features on genetic variation in 15 commercially important Brazilian fish species with varying life history traits. Despite extensive environmental heterogeneity, we did not observe evidence of concordant patterns of genetic structure for those species along the Brazilian coast. Similarly, no correlation was found between species traits and levels of gene divergence or diversity. The inference of past demographic changes using mtDNA sequence data suggests that most species have maintained stable population sizes, potentially reflecting the stable environmental conditions in the southwest Atlantic region. |

Original Article Ovarian development and reproductive biology of Hoplias argentinensis (Characiformes: Erythrinidae), a top predator of the Pampa plain lakes, Argentina Battagliotti, Cristian Rosso, Juan José González-Castro, Mariano Resumo em Espanhol: Resumen El complejo de especies Hoplias malabaricus es importante para pesquerías comerciales y artesanales. Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Species in the Hoplias malabaricus complex are important for commercial and artisanal fisheries. Recent studies have identified several species within this complex, including Hoplias argentinensis (the southernmost species), but no precise biological knowledge exist for it. In the present work, the reproductive biology of H. argentinensis was studied in the shallow lake Kakel Huincul (Buenos Aires, Argentina), between May 2022 and May 2023. Five ovarian maturation phases were macroscopic and histologically characterized and four ovarian maturation phases were detected: immature, developing, spawning capable (including active spawning subphase) and regressing. The results suggest a reproductive season from May to February, with a spawning season from October to February. Batch fecundity varied between 24,342 and 77,866 oocytes. The relative fecundity ranged between 12 and 67 oocytes/g ovary. Histological analysis and frequency distribution of oocyte diameters in actively spawning females revealed a tetramodal pattern characterizing H. argentinensis as an iteroparous batch spawner with indeterminate fecundity. These results provide a better understanding of the reproductive life cycle of this newly described species at its southernmost occurrence. This study also provides the first histologic description of the maturation ovarian phases and oocyte development stages in an annual cycle. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Hypostomus is a remarkable group within Siluriformes due to its high species richness, pronounced morphological and chromosomal variability, which complicates the process of species identification. In this context, the aim of this study was to identify possible interpopulational chromosomal markers that could significantly contribute to our understanding of the differentiation in H. strigaticeps of distinct tributaries. Two H. strigaticeps populations from the upper Paraná River basin were analyzed using cytogenetic methods. Our results revealed interpopulation variations in H. strigaticeps, despite limited sampling of the Ivaí River population, particularly in the number of 18S and 5S rDNA sites. Moreover, the individuals from both populations exhibited the same chromosome count (2n = 72) and fundamental number (FN = 108), as well as identical chromosome morphology and similarities in the distribution of constitutive heterochromatin. The transposable elements (TEs) Rex1 and Rex3 were found scattered along the chromosomes, with a higher concentration of Rex3 elements in pairs carrying rDNA. Our findings provide novel insights into a possible involvement of TEs in the variability of rDNA distribution patterns, contributing to karyotypic diversification in H. strigaticeps. |

Original Article Cyto and genotoxicity induced by exposure to textile production effluents on Astyanax lacustris (Pisces: Characidae) can be reduced after treatment through a vertical flow constructed wetland system da Silva, Josiane Rodrigues Rocha Silva, Cleiton Campos da Zafra-Lemos, Layon Portela-Castro, Ana Luiza de Brito Fernandes, Carlos Alexandre Resumo em Português: Resumo Os efluentes têxteis possuem uma composição complexa que inclui elementos físicos, químicos e biológicos, e podem apresentar propriedades mutagênicas, genotóxicas e carcinogênicas. A portion of the dyes utilized in the textile industry is lost during the dyeing process, ultimately contaminating aquatic environments when released into bodies of water. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the cyto/genotoxic effects of textile production effluents on Astyanax lacustris specimens both before and after treatment with a vertical flow constructed wetland system (VFCW). We examined 60 fish (divided into five treatment conditions, with four fish per condition, in triplicate). The fish were exposed to the contaminants for a duration of seven days. The analysis methods employed included biomarker assessment, the micronucleus (MN) test, cellular morphological changes (CMC) analysis, and the comet assay. Fish exposed to 5% v/v of raw textile effluent and the effluents that underwent VFCW treatment exhibited significant damage in comparison to the control groups. The bioremediation of the dye carried out by the VFCW system proved to be efficient, as confirmed by physicochemical analysis. We conclude that the biodegradation of textile production effluents can successfully be achieved through the use of VFCW. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The Atlantic goliath grouper, Epinephelus itajara, is Critically Endangered in Brazil and relies on mangrove habitats as nurseries. It is extremely vulnerable to overfishing; however, long-term genetic assessments remain scarce, leaving a gap in our understanding of population dynamics. We assessed the genetic variation of 126 juveniles collected in 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2022 using 18 microsatellite loci. Thirteen loci were polymorphic, with allele numbers ranging from 3 to 17. The average observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity were 0.706 (0.556–0.897) and 0.710 (0.524–0.890), respectively. There were no significant differences in He, FIS, and FST. The effective population size (Ne) was estimated at 413.3 (95% CI: 260.8–897.1), suggesting potential risks to the species’ long-term viability. AMOVA indicated that 99.64 % of total genetic variation corresponded to differences within individuals, while the Bayesian clustering analysis indicated that all individuals had mixed ancestries. The relatedness analysis identified a notable number of sibling relationships, suggesting a reduced spawning stock. Our results suggest that due to the species’ long-life span, shifts in the population structure and genetic diversity are unlikely to be reflected within this sampling period. This highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and maintaining the fishing ban to protect the species. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Atlantic goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) form spawning aggregations, each with around 100 individuals. However no studies have been carried out comparing these aggregations in natural and artificial environments. In this article we determine patterns in aggregation abundance by observations we made between 2007 and 2014 on three natural and four artificial reefs in southern Brazil by comparing sightings-per-unit-effort (SPUE) among these reefs. Their abundance differed significantly among artificial and natural reefs. No aggregations were observed on natural reefs, however aggregations up to 54 atlantic goliath groupers were observed on artificial reefs. This changed pattern of abundance may be due to fishing pressure and/or attraction to artificial reefs. We discuss the potential ecological effects of diminished abundance on natural reefs and increased abundance on artificial reefs. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The genus Proloricaria is widely distributed throughout the upper Paraná River drainage. Its type-species, Loricaria prolixa, was described from specimens of the Tietê River basin, and the other species, P. lentiginosa, was originally described as L. prolixa lentiginosa, from specimens of the Grande River basin. The two species exhibit considerable morphological similarity and, since their description, there are doubts regarding their recognition and taxonomic validity. In this study, an integrative taxonomy approach was employed to distinguish and delimit the species through both morphological analyses of specimens from collections and molecular analyses of recently collected specimens, as well as published genetic data. Morphologically, the two species are primarily differentiated by color pattern and the presence of a pair of anterior pre-dorsal plates in P. lentiginosa, which are absent in P. prolixa. Molecular analyses further support the taxonomic validity of the two species, revealing an interspecific genetic distance of 3.1%. The species are redescribed, and references to both in the literature, and their distribution in the upper Paraná River basin, are reviewed. Proloricaria prolixa is distributed across the Tietê, Paranapanema, Paraná and Paranaíba river basins, whereas P. lentiginosa is found in the Grande and Paranaíba river basins. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract This study described the life history of Pyrrhulina capim in streams of the Eastern Amazon, linking key environmental predictors that can influence its reproductive activity. Specimens were collected between March 2019 and March 2020 in a stream of the Guamá River basin. The P. capim population was assessed for sex ratio, length at first maturation (L50), gonadal maturation activity, growth pattern, spawning type, and fecundity. The effects of environmental variables on reproductive activity were analyzed separately by sex using Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). A total of 404 individuals were analyzed, comprising 218 females and 186 males, with no significant bias in sex ratio. Females reached first maturation at 24.91 mm, whereas males reached it at 21.47 mm. The reproductive activity was consistent in both sexes throughout the study period. The species exhibited positive allometric growth (b = 3.12) with no notable differences between males and females. Oocyte diameters ranged from 0.05 mm to 0.70 mm, indicating multiple-batch spawning. Average fecundity was 162 eggs. Stream width, depth, and substrate type accounted for 13% of the variability in female reproductive activity. These findings suggest that P. capim adopts an opportunistic reproductive strategy. |

Original Article Current and future invasion of a predator with potential for impact negative in a region of high neotropical endemism Geller, Iago V. Vitule, Jean R. S. Ferraz, João D. Pereira, Alan D. Orsi, Mário L. Resumo em Português: Resumo A região Neotropical abriga a maior diversidade de peixes e vem enfrentando declínio preocupante. Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The Neotropical region harbors the greatest fish diversity but has been experiencing a concerning decline. The Iguaçu basin, region of high endemism in southern Brazil, has extinction pressures due to the introduction of the non-native predator Salminus brasiliensis (dorado). It is believed that this species is increasing its occurrence, highlighting the need for assessments of its dispersal. This study aimed to update occurrence records of S. brasiliensis in the Iguaçu, evaluate its invasiveness and potential local extinctions and model its current and future distribution in southern Brazil. To achieve this, we employed citizen science, the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), and ecological niche modeling. Results indicate a significant increase in S. brasiliensis occurrences between 2013 and 2024, with an upstream expansion of over 500 km. The AS-ISK classified the species as highly invasive (38/68), with a high-confidence protocol score. Species distribution modeling suggests a reduction in its native range in the Central-West region of Brazil, while its distribution is expanding into non-native areas in the South of the country. Although the species is iconic in South America, it poses a real threat to Iguaçu. |

Original Article Histopathological changes in the gills of Astyanax lacustris specimens exposed to a reactive textile dye, before and after treatment with the constructed wetland system Silva, Josiane Rodrigues Rocha da Andrade, Camila Oliveira de Almeida, Fernanda Losi Alves de Fernandes, Carlos Alexandre Resumo em Português: Resumo Corantes reativos, comumente utilizados na indústria têxtil, têm mostrado potencial para causar danos a organismos aquáticos. Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Reactive dyes commonly used in the textile industry have been found to pose potential harm to aquatic organisms. In light of the lack of comprehensive studies on the effects of reactive dyes, our study aimed to assess the impact of Novacron® Bold Deep Navy reactive dye on the gills of Astyanax lacustris. Specifically, we sought to determine the toxicity of the dye before and after treatment using a vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) system. During the experiment, A. lacustris specimens were exposed to sublethal concentrations (10, 20, 30, and 40 mg L-1) of Novacron® Bold Deep Navy dye and to dye treated by the VFCW for 96 hours. Our findings indicated that the dye led to significant gill damage, including secondary lamellar fusion, hyperplasia, hypertrophy of lamellar epithelial cells, telangiectasia, and aneurysm, compared to the control group (p < 0.05) at all concentrations. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images revealed the disappearance of microdigitations as the dye concentration increased. The VFCW system demonstrated efficient bioremediation of the dye, as evidenced by reduced gill damage and favorable physical-chemical analyses. These results emphasize the potential risk of dye to aquatic organisms, while also showcasing the effectiveness of the VFCW system in removing the dye. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Seabed resources contribute to one-third of global oil extraction, leading to the development of offshore oil platforms that act as artificial ecosystems supporting diverse fish and invertebrate assemblages. However, ecological studies on ichthyofauna associated with oil and gas structures along the Peruvian continental shelf remain limited. This study used underwater video footage collected across a depth gradient (0–40 m) divided into five strata around the MX-1 oil platform, located off Los Órganos (4°S, Piura, Peru), during austral spring (October 2022), using open-circuit SCUBA. Temperature and salinity were recorded with a hand-held CTD. Over six dives, a total of 7,969 individual fish were recorded, comprising 27 species from 13 families, including eight species targeted by fisheries. Fish belonged to two biogeographic provinces: Peruvian (n = 3) and Panamic (n = 20), with four species from the transition zone. Vertical distribution pattern was observed: species richness was highest in the shallowest stratum (0–5 m; n = 19), while fish abundance peaked in deeper layers (30–40 m). Carnivorous and planktivorous fish predominated. MX-1 functioned as a fish-aggregating device (FAD) and a local hotspot of fish diversity. Its partial removal could result in habitat loss, affecting associated assemblages, artisanal fisheries, and recreational activities. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract We studied the early larval stages (preflexion and flexion) of the pufferfish Sphoeroides pachygaster based on ichthyoplankton samples collected off the southeastern coast of Brazil. Species identification was performed through molecular analysis and morphological, morphometric, and meristic characters of different larval development stages. A total of 4,077 specimens were collected, with the vast majority (4,071 larvae) in the preflexion stage and the remainder (6 larvae) in the flexion stage. These larvae have a robust body shape, moderate height (body depth = 35.8% of the body length in early preflexion and 33.9% in flexion), and large eyes (eye diameter = 48.6% of the head length in preflexion and 36.8% in flexion stage). The tail is longer at the beginning of the preflexion stage (approximately 45% of body length at 1.53 mm). It decreases in length during the flexion stage (approximately 20% of body length at 6.43 mm). Notochord flexion initiates at around 5.69 mm and continues until at least 6.43 mm. The first observation of body inflation was recorded in a larva measuring 5.98 mm. Sphoeroides pachygaster larvae have a wide distribution across the study area, ranging from the outer shelf to oceanic waters. Vertically, the species is predominantly found within the water column layers between 0 and 50 m in depth. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Aquatic systems are the first environment to show signs of vulnerability due to the presence of pollutants presenting changes in water quality. These changes are a source of stress for aquatic organisms, including fish, which can bioaccumulate and biomagnify the substances found in their environment. In this sense, fish become the main axis to evaluate the quality of ecosystems through increasingly detailed tools such as RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify metabolic pathways and genes. The objective of this systematic review was to determine the pathways and genes involved in transcriptomics studies performed in situ using fish to assess environmental contamination. It was found that contaminants can be differentiated into point or diffuse, ranging from heavy metals, endocrine disruptors, and organic compounds to those that seek to identify biomarkers by assessing the health of fish. We found 38 differentially expressed genes in common that are related to lipid and xenobiotic metabolism pathways, cell death, immune and inflammatory response, oxidative stress and hormonal signalling. In addition, we highlight the need to perform these studies in regions with a high number of fish species, such as Africa and South America, where studies are scarce or non-existent at the time of this review. |
