Paulo Freire: educator-thinker of liberation

Abstract

The present work proposes an examination of the humanistic critical theoretical foundation of educator and thinker Paulo Freire, regarding it as a guideline of his view on liberation. The work begins by contextualizing the personal, historical, political and philosophical scene that characterized the beginning of Freire's work and his choice to work with the marginalized sectors of Brazilian society. The second part delineates key concepts that support his theoretical approach. Next, questions regarding the roll intellectuals play according to Freire in educational/social contemporary contexts are brought into consideration. The articles concludes by demonstrating how elements developed in this article lead us back to Freire's original notion of radicalness inside humanization, also a part of his first thoughts.
