Evaluation of the cutting time and growth regulators in fig cuttings

The research had as purpose to evaluate the fig trees propagation with hard-wood cuttings with indol-butyric acid, in different collecting periods. The cuttings were taken from 5-year-old 'Roxo de Valinhos' fig trees. The branches were taken during the hibernal pruning, in the end of August, September and October. The cuttings were treated with IBA powder form, at the following concentrations: 0 (control), 2,500; 5,000; 7,500 and 10,000 mg kg-1. Later they were placed to root in polypropylene trays, with vermiculite as substratum and under intermittent mist for 70 days. After this period, the rooting cuttings percentage, the length of the biggest root (cm) and the dry mass of the roots (g) were evaluated. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a factorial scheme 3x5. It was observed that cuttings proceeding from the control treatment and from the August pruning, showed lower rooting percentage (20%), shorter root length and lighter root dry mass, requiring treatment with IBA at 2,500 mg kg-1 concentration to increase significantly this percentage to 90%. Cuttings originated from the September and October pruning did not require treatment with AIB to obtain a high rooting number. The September month was the most feasible for the fig trees cuttings, since it had the highest rooting percentage (95-100%). The cuttings treatment with 7,500 and 10,000 mg kg-1 of IBA had the lowest rooting percentage, the shortest length and the lightest root dry mass in the months of August and September.
