Transatlantic Interests: Accusations, Scandal and (Un)lawful and (Il)legitimate Business - São Paulo, Goiás and Lisbon (1721-1733)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to elaborate a narrative of the complaints and accusations exchanged between the governor of São Paulo, Antônio da Silva Caldeira Pimentel, and the clan of Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva, around the legitimacy of the advantages promised by the King of Portugal in case of discovery of gold deposits in Goiás. Attentive to the noises that circulate through a network of interpersonal relationships, they hope to access rights and benefits in the disputed political field of the empire. The article also aims to highlight the intentions of the protagonists behind the war of narratives: both hope to legitimize their arguments and weaken the position of the opponent. Fueling intrigue and luring the monarch to the epicenter of the disputes, accusations of abuses against authorities reveal the nature of the relationships woven between colonial agents - experiences marked by the social position of those involved in the disputes in Portuguese America.
