Isso permite identificar ameaças (reais e imaginárias) para o projeto de nação defendido pelas alas conservadoras, assim como o seu interesse no papel que os estabelecimentos cinematográficos teriam para uma educação “civilizadora”.Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Based on the articles “Cinematographo e criminalidade” (1913) by intellectual Elysio de Carvalho and “Cinema e Suggestão” (1914) by jurist José de Britto Alves, this article seeks to analyze the supposed dangers that cinema could pose to the Brazilian population in the early 20th century and how it could serve to maintain the status quo, that is, for the upbringing and control of the “masses”. Through documentary analysis, we will see what strategies were used by the authorities (government and police), and which would be applied by the police forces, for stricter control of what was projected in theaters. This allows us to identify (real and imagined) threats to the nation project defended by conservative factions, as well as their interest in the role that movie theaters would play in “civilizing” education. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The text, organized into four parts, discusses how Anísio Teixeira was portrayed in biographies between 1973 and 1997. In the first part, it is examined how biographers have portrayed the author’s intellectual uniqueness. In the second, it is examined how biographers endowed his trajectory with meaning and direction. The third part of the article proposes that the rehabilitation of Anísio Teixeira as one of the most important Brazilian educators and of his work as a classic flourished during the country’s democratic reopening between 1985 and 1990. In the fourth part, it is considered that new studies of the author’s career did not alter the biographical canon of the early studies or reject his main attributes: consistency and motivation. |

Artigo What Was Literature? Historical Research in the Face of Uncertainties in Brazilian Literary Criticism at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries Ozanam, Israel Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Este artigo busca demonstrar a relevância do diálogo com a literatura para historiadores cujas pesquisas não tratam diretamente da relação entre literatura e história. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article aims to highlight the importance of engaging with literature for historians whose research does not directly address the relationship between literature and history. It does so by examining the instability of the distinction between literature and other types of writing in Brazil at the turn of the 19th to 20th century, as illustrated in the reflections of critics like Graça Aranha and José Veríssimo, who shared with authors from abroad the theoretical uncertainties and practical challenges of classifying texts. The article explores how these ambiguities can affect the interpretation of historical sources, particularly those traditionally regarded as non-literary, and suggests a methodological reconsideration of the practice of assigning genres to texts used as sources in historiography. |

Artigo In Defense of Population Control: The Concept of Race, Populations, and the Persistence of Renato Kehl’s discourse on eugenic sterilization in the 1950s and 1960s Carvalho, Leonardo Dallacqua de Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO O texto analisa o discurso sobre esterilização do médico eugenista Renato Kehl (1889-1974) durante a década de 1950, bem como as transformações lexicais em sua campanha eugênica. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The text analyzes the discourse on sterilization by eugenicist physician Renato Kehl (1889-1974) during the 1950s, as well as the lexical transformations in his eugenics campaign. The documentary research involves his publications in the São Paulo newspaper A Gazeta between 1950 and 1960. Through an analysis informed by the History of Science and Intellectual History, the objective is to contribute to historiographical interpretations that highlight the persistence of eugenic discourse, associated with ideas of population control and eugenic sterilization. Despite the change in its scientific language, the use of expressions related to Third World countries suggests that eugenics remained in force as a birth control project. The research reinforces the thesis that eugenic discourse adapted to the new global agendas of the post-World War II era while continuing to promote an awareness focused on human selection. |

Artigo The History That Can Be Read Between the Lines of the Spell: Magical-Religious Books Between Suspicion, Circulation, And Historiographical Writing Albino, Jefferson Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO O artigo analisa a circulação dos livros mágico-religiosos no Brasil entre os séculos XIX e XX, destacando como esses impressos foram simultaneamente classificados, perseguidos, legitimados e silenciados por instâncias editoriais, jornalísticas, policiais e jurídicas. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The article analyzes the circulation of magical-religious books in Brazil between the 19th and 20th centuries, highlighting how these publications were simultaneously classified, persecuted, legitimized, and silenced by editorial, journalistic, police, and legal authorities. The research mobilizes advertisements, chronicles, news articles, and habeas corpus petitions containing criminal proceedings to understand how such objects were produced as merchandise, corpus delicti, and practices of care. The case of José Francisco Pinto Breves (1888) shows the book as a performative instrument in healing; that of Maria dos Anjos (1907) reveals deliberate omissions in police records; and the series published in Correio Paranaense (1893) shows how the press manufactured meanings of desire, threat, and prestige around the Book of Saint Cyprian. It can be concluded that these publications condensed disputes over authority and that their historiographical reinscription exposes colonial hierarchies that are still in place today. |

Artigo Not Every Amnesty Was (Is) Democratic: Controversies over Amnesty in Brazil’s Political Transition of 1945 Chaves, Cintya Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Há 80 anos, o Brasil vivia o processo de enfraquecimento de sua primeira ditadura: o Estado Novo. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Eighty years ago, Brazil was witnessing the waning of its first dictatorship, the Estado Novo. The country still faced many challenges, among them confronting a past marked by state crimes. In this context, the 1945 struggle for amnesty took center stage in shaping a rhetoric that aligned democracy with antifascism, justice, and redress. This text examines that theme. Drawing on public and private documents, we seek to challenge the tendency in Brazilian historiography to view the 1945 amnesty solely through the lens of pacification and appeasement. While such arguments were indeed present at the time, the families of political victims, especially those of the dead, demanded punishment for those involved in the arrests and executions of their relatives, as well as justice in the realms of memory and history. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article presents an analysis of the Qing state’s management of power struggles in the court and the formation of factions contending for the imperial throne after the Qing dynasty overthrew the Ming dynasty in 1644. This article aims to analyze the struggles surrounding the power and legitimacy of a foreign dynasty, the Qing, belonging to the Manchu ethnic group, against the Han ethnic group, the majority in China. Thus, this article aims to demonstrate the new theory presented herein, the “power paradox theory”, whose purpose is to reevaluate the Qing state’s ability to manage its territorial expansion and assimilation of ethnic minorities through military force and despotic exercise of power, or, conversely, to promote economic and political reforms for efficient resource management. |
