Abstract: Analysis of articles that deal with the work of Franciscans in Portuguese America published in the Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro. It is the oldest Brazilian institution dedicated to the research and conservation of historical and cultural documents in Brazil. Created in 1839, with the purpose of collecting and publishing historical documents relevant to the history of Brazil, and encouraging public institutions to preserve historical documents as part of a project to build a ‘national memory’. The Institute's Journal was created in the same year. In it, the articles dealing with the theme were investigated, especially about the catechetical and missionary work of the Franciscans in Colonial Brazil. In the Revista do IHGB, various historical documents were found, which emphasize the importance of the work of the religious of the Order of St. Francis in the constitution of the national identity.
