Experiência com um programa de educação para pacientes diabéticos com baixo nível sócio-econômico

In orderto support a better clinical and metabolic control fordiabetic patients and improve their quality of life, a multiprofessional diabetes education program was established. We intended to make the patients aware of the meaning of the disease and help them to develop self management skills. During the study period (16 months) we followed a group of 26 Type I diabetic patients with mean age of 17,4 + 7,0 years and mean diabetes duration of 39,4 + 44,8 months. The control group was composed of 24 IDDM patients regularly attended at the diabetic clinic in the study period, who did not engage the education program. At the end of the study, patients were able to perform urinary glicose tests and to recognize and act correctly in cases of hypoglicaemia; moreover they were capable of reusing disposable syringes. We didn't find any statistically significant difference in clinical and metabolic parameters among the study group before the beginning of the program. The same was true for comparisons between the study and the control group. It's important to notice however that we registered no cases of ketoacidosis in the study group. We concluded that the Diabetic Education Program was important to facilitate patients' access to the necessary information to their treatment what, at a long term follow-up, could be reflected in a better metabolic control of the disease.
