An X-ray of a publication - REMReaders of this year’s REM number 2 issue may not realize the extent of the work carried out by the editorial, review, and technical teams involved in the production of REM. These activities are fundamental to ensuring the regularity and editorial quality of the journal. Even so, a structural challenge remains: the recovery of the Impact Factor.
In recent years, REM has adopted systematic actions aimed at recovering this indicator. Among them, the inclusion of the journal in the Web of Science - Core Collection stands out, a step that has already been completed. The evaluation period associated with this phase varies between six and twelve months and is aligned with the journal's editorial schedule, whose next submission is scheduled for July 25, 2025.
The absence of an Impact Factor prompted a diagnostic analysis of articles published in 2025. Initial results indicate a predominance of publications in the areas of Civil Engineering (43%), followed by Mining (29%) and Metallurgy and Materials (23%). This thematic distribution reflects the historical scope of the journal and shows a tendency to remain so throughout 2026, reinforcing the need for continuous monitoring of the balance between the areas covered.
The authorship analysis revealed the participation of 179 authors affiliated with fifty-one universities and companies. The University of São Paulo (USP) accounts for approximately 10% of the published articles, followed by the Federal Universities of Espírito Santo and Rio Grande do Sul. However, a limited number of studies resulting from partnerships between universities and the productive sector are observed. Strengthening these collaborations is widely recognized as a strategic mechanism for attracting research funding, incorporating practical industry experience, facilitating technology transfer, and training human resources more aligned with the demands of the labor market.
As a complementary element to visibility analysis, REM maintains an active presence on the professional network LinkedIn, with over 10,000 connections internationally. This activity has been used as an additional channel for disseminating published articles and promoting the exchange of ideas and debates related to innovation in different areas of engineering.
It is also worth noting that, since its creation, REM has maintained independence from federal institutions, in contrast to the recurring pattern of institutional endogeneity observed in some scientific journals. Currently, for economic reasons, the journal is published by the Gorceix Foundation, a private entity created to support the School of Mines. This institutional arrangement has been crucial in enabling REM to reach its 90th anniversary without dependence on direct government funding.
Although the relevance of quantitative quality indicators for scientific journals is widely recognized, the analysis of REM's statistical data reveals a continuous effort toward editorial improvement and the maintenance of high quality standards. This body of evidence contributes to positioning the journal as a consistent and reliable vehicle for disseminating research results, an aspect that should be considered in institutional strategies for promoting and increasing the visibility of published articles.
