Original Paper Plasticity of xylem vessel traits in Ocotea indecora (Lauraceae) wood along an altitudinal gradient in dense montane Atlantic Forest Longui, Eduardo Luiz Santos, Camila Moura Starzynski, Roberto Rossi, Marcio Kanashiro, Marina Mitsue Bucci, Luís Aberto Ranzini, Maurício Lima, Israel Luiz de Resumo em Inglês: Abstract We investigated the plasticity of vessel features in Ocotea indecora wood along a 300 m altitude gradient in dense montane rainforest. Our results showed that wood of trees at 1,000 m presented higher potential hydraulic conductivity (kp), which is consistent with wood that invests more in efficient water transport. These results stand in contrast to those from wood of trees at 1,200 and 1,300 m, which presented vessel indices consistent with wood that invests more in the safety of water transport. Comparison between trees with higher kp at 1,000 m and trees with lower kp at 1,200 m showed that vessel-grouping index, vulnerability index, and mesomorphy index were all lower at 1,000 m, while vessel multiple fraction was higher at 1,000 m. At elevations from 1,000 to 1,300 m, we can infer two different relief compartments, plateau and escarpment, both have steep slopes with shallow soils, but on the plateau, they tend to be deeper. Considering the evidence of vessel features, vessel indices and hydraulic conductivity, together with soil traits, climate and landscape relief, we concluded that the difference in investment of water transport vs. safety between trees at 1,000 m vs. 1,200-1,300 m represents vessel plasticity consistent with adaptations that allow the growth, development and reproduction of this species in these different environments. |

Original Paper A digital interactive key for identification of Miconia s.s. (Melastomataceae) from Pará, northern Brazil, with new records from the state Lopes, Rennan Oliveira, Alexandre Amilton de Meirelles, Julia Caddah, Mayara Krasinski Resumo em Inglês: Abstract In Brazil, the Amazonian region lacks information on Miconia, where around 175 species are estimated to occur. Pará, the second largest northern state, is home to 87 Miconia s.s. species and one subspecies. In this study, we have developed the first digital and interactive identification key for Miconia using 36 characters with 114 states on the Xper³ platform. The key can be accessed at <https://app.xper3.fr:443/xper3GeneratedFiles/publish/identification/-8015989149121494953/> and includes original drawings and digital pictures of herbarium specimens for easier use. During the preparation of the key, we also detected eight new records of Miconia species within the state, and we indicate some uncertainties about previous occurrence records of some other species. This digital interactive key will aid in the identification of Miconia species within the Amazon and can also serve as a template for future broader keys. |

Original Paper Diversity and nesting characteristics of stingless bees in an urban green area, the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro Teixeira, Maria Lucia França Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Green urban areas act as refuges for the nests of stingless bees, during reproduction, in response to niche constraints. This study investigated the characteristics of natural colonization by stingless bees in the arboretum of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, located within the city’s urban fabric. A total of 94 nests belonging to 13 species were found in the following proportions: Tetragonisca angustula (37.3%), Partamona helleri (16%), Nannotrigona testaceicornis (12.8%), Oxytrigona cagafogo (8.5%), Scaptotrigona xanthotricha, Paratrigona subnuda, Trigona spinipes, and Trigona hypogea (each 4.2%), Plebeia droryana (3.2%), Lestrimelitta tropica (2.1%), Melipona (Eomelipona) bicolor, Scaptotrigona bipunctata, and Trigona braueri (each 1.1%). Most nests were built inside tree trunks or in the treetops, but some were also found in stone walls, in monuments, and in the ground. Nests were identified in 48 tree species across 21 botanical families, predominantly in Moraceae (19.44%) and Cupressaceae (15.28%). The colonized trees had an average diameter of 1.09 m, indicating mature trees, which favor the establishment of stingless bee nests. The height, density, spatial distribution and survival of the nests were evaluated. These results underscore the importance of conserving stingless bee nests in urban green areas. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract This study investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of the crude hydroalcoholic extract of Myrcia splendens leaves. In vitro, neutrophil chemotaxis and LPS-induced inflammatory mediators were assessed in neutrophils or macrophages treated with M. splendens, salicylic acid, or gallic acid. Inflammation resolution was evaluated via efferocytosis. In vivo effects were tested using the air pouch model. M. splendens impaired macrophage secretion of TNF, IL-1β, IL-6, and NO following LPS stimulation. Neutrophils treated with LPS and incubated with the extract showed reduced migration and NO secretion. Likewise, salicylic and gallic acids decreased NO production in LPS-stimulated neutrophils. The extract enhanced efferocytosis, increased IL-10, and decreased TNF levels. In vivo, similar effects were observed, including reduced neutrophil migration and NO production. These findings suggest that M. splendens modulates neutrophil and macrophage functions, likely due to the presence of salicylic and gallic acids. This highlights its potential as a treatment for inflammatory conditions. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract We examined the knowledge held by urban residents regarding tree species as well as their preferences and perceptions of green areas within their city. Pedestrians in Fortaleza, Ceará state, Brazil, were interviewed regarding the tree species they know and value, and the tree species present in the square where the interviews were recorded. We expected higher mentions of exotic species and a preference for them over native species, reflecting global urbanization trends and the fact that most trees in the city studied are exotic. We also hypothesized that urban green areas would be positively evaluated by citizens, linked to perceptions of green spaces as beneficial to human well-being and health. The interviewees cited 100 ethnospecies, representing 97 biological species. Participants showed greater familiarity with, and preference for, exotic species. These results aligned with our expectations, as exotic trees are much more common in Fortaleza than native species. The number of species cited was influenced by the interviewee’s age and origin (urban vs. rural). Despite recognizing the importance of urban trees, many interviewees associated them with drawbacks like leaf clutter and infrastructure damage. Our findings suggest that promoting planting native fruit trees and implementing proper management could foster the appreciation of native species in urban settings and help preserve local knowledge and ecosystem services. This underscores the potential for integrating native species into urban green spaces to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health and to counteract the impacts of urbanization and the loss of traditional ecological knowledge. |

Original Paper Between fibers and flavors: buriti and its multiple uses in the markets of Boa Vista, Roraima state, Brazil Pereira, Rhilary Herielle Gomes Tuler, Amélia Carlos Resumo em Português: Resumo Este estudo analisa a comercialização do buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) em feiras e mercados públicos de Boa Vista, Roraima, Brasil, com ênfase em sua relevância socioeconômica e cultural. Resumo em Inglês: Abstract We investigated the commercialization of buriti palm (Mauritia flexuosa) products in the open-air markets and fairs of Boa Vista, Roraima State, Brazil, emphasizing their socio-economic and cultural relevance. Interviews were conducted with ten vendors selected for their involvement in selling buriti-based products in six public markets. Our results revealed a predominance of artisanal uses (77%), including the production of baskets, hammocks, earrings, and decorative items primarily derived from plant fibers. Additionally, culinary uses of the fruits, such as juice pulp, liqueurs, and sweets, demonstrate the plant’s nutritional and economic value. The study highlights the integral role of Indigenous Communities (Warao, Yanomami, Macuxi, and Taurepang) in both the production and supply of buriti-based products, often without intermediaries. These groups contribute raw materials and craftsmanship that sustain cultural practices linked to buriti - including traditional rituals and ecological knowledge. Despite the recognized importance of the buriti value chain, it faces challenges due to limited institutional support, informal logistics, and the lack of public policy integration. Our findings underscore the need for strategies that can promote sustainable development, cultural preservation, and the economic strengthening of socio-biodiversity resources, and point to the need for future initiatives (academic, political, and community-driven) designed to prioritize and formalize Indigenous artisanal production, improve logistics, and advance policies aligned with conservation and bioeconomy principles. |

Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Plant tissue culture enables the clonal propagation of economically valuable species under controlled and aseptic conditions. Among in vitro methods, micropropagation remains the most widely applied for large-scale plant production, relying on both direct and indirect regeneration pathways for commercial purposes. Nevertheless, the high costs associated with these regeneration systems continue to limit their broader use. Bioreactor technology has emerged as a promising alternative to enhance plant biomass multiplication and reduce expenses related to culture media and manual handling, bridging the gap between traditional micropropagation and industrial-scale production. But is this approach really practical? This question was addressed by reviewing scientific publications from 2000 to 2024 retrieved from ScienceDirect (SD) and The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), platforms recognized for extensive peer-reviewed coverage and strong indexing standards, as well as by analyzing patent filings from the European Patent Office database, which covers a wide range of countries, to evaluate whether bioreactors are contributing to the broader adoption of plant tissue culture techniques in commercial applications. This review highlights bioreactors as a promising strategy for cost-effective large-scale plant propagation, while underscoring the need for further research to optimize culture conditions and enhance species adaptability to bioreactor systems. |
