A Brief History
|
Brazilian Oral Research - BOR (online version ISSN 1807-3107) is the official publication of the Brazilian Society for Oral Research - SBPqO (Brazilian Division of the International Association for Dental Research - IADR). The journal is peer-reviewed (double-blind system), and its mission is to disseminate and promote the exchange of information on the various areas of dental research. BOR has open access, gold modality, without embargo (Open Access), allowing virtual access, without restriction (including financial restrictions), to all scientific texts published by the journal. BOR publishes its articles in electronic format, in a continuous publication mode, organized in an annual volume. The abbreviated title of the journal is Braz Oral Res, a form that should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic captions. |
Open Access
|
BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including no financial barriers) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open Access is a condition whereby the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), permitting immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Compliance with Open Science
|
Our editorial policy follows the research communication in the Open Science modus operandi. In line with the Open Science guidelines, BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors, and the use of social networks to disseminate published work. In addition, it requires the precise indication of the contribution of each author in articles with multiple authorship through the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), encourages the sharing of analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts, and additional materials, made available in open online repositories such as SciELO Data, Zenodo, Figshare and OSF. If they cannot be published in the work itself, and this information should be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles that report research should indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the research and the results obtained. Thus, manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement of availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts. To ensure transparency in the process, data and other documents deposited in open online repositories must be specified in the methodology, and their access links must be included in the article's methodology. BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms such as SciELO Preprints, Preprints.org, and Emerging Research Information (EmeRI) so that, where appropriate, they can be discussed openly before being published. Also in line with open science practices, BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH offers authors and reviewers the option of opening up the peer review process, with or without identifying their names. Authorization to disclose the name can be given by the authors when submitting the article and by the reviewers when filling in the Evaluation Form on compliance with Open Science. The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript evaluation process. |
Ethics in Publishing

BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH is dedicated to complying with good practices regarding the moral conduct of scientific journal publishing, based on the code of conduct of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) as well as the Equator Network and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Authors, Editors, and Reviewers are encouraged to follow all the rules of good practice in scientific research. The journal uses similarity checking programs - iThenticate and Crossref Alliance - with previously published texts. BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH does not condone plagiarism or any other unethical behavior. Cases of similar texts are immediately communicated to the authors. |
Use of Artificial Intelligence - AI
|
The Brazilian Oral Research recommends caution in the use of Artificial Intelligence in the scientific writing process and defines its actions based on the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Authorship and scientific/ethical/legal responsibility are exclusively human, and AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of scientific articles. Therefore, authors are responsible for errors, biases, plagiarism, false references, and data integrity, even when AI is used. Therefore, all AI-assisted content must be critically verified by the author. Text generated by AI is not free from plagiarism, self-plagiarism, or copyright infringement. Therefore, it is the authors' responsibility to verify textual similarity and copyrights associated with the tool used. Furthermore, it is the authors' responsibility to ensure the intellectual originality of the text, since the uncritical use of AI can result in unintentional plagiarism, which is still the author's responsibility. It is not acceptable to use AI to fabricate, manipulate, or enhance data, results, tables, or graphs, nor to generate nonexistent references or distort citations. AI-mediated fabrication or falsification constitutes scientific misconduct. Figures and images generated by AI without transparency or scientific validation compromise the integrity of the scientific record. The use of AI must be declared transparently when contributing to the writing, restructuring, synthesis, translation, or analysis, and authors must state the name of the tool used, the purpose of its use, and the level of human supervision. Authors who use Artificial Intelligence tools in writing the manuscript, producing images, or graphic elements of the article must present in the Methodology section which AI tool was used and how it was employed. No declaration is necessary when AI is used only for basic linguistic corrections (grammar, spelling, style). Deliberate omission may constitute misconduct. |
Declaration on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence and AI-Assisted Technologies
|
The use of Artificial Intelligence is permitted as a tool to support scientific writing and organization, provided there is transparency, human supervision, and full responsibility of the authors. AI tools cannot be authors, should not be used to fabricate data, manipulate images, or replace human editorial judgment. Inappropriate or undeclared use may constitute scientific misconduct. When using AI or AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, authors will need to include a statement in the “Ethics” section with the following content: During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [name of the tool or service] exclusively for [specific purpose, for example: writing support, text organization, or improvement of linguistic clarity]. All content produced with the aid of this technology was fully reviewed, edited, and validated by the authors, who assume full ethical, scientific, and legal responsibility for the originality, accuracy, integrity of the data, correct attribution of references, and compliance with good practices in scientific publication, as recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). This statement does not apply to the use of basic automated tools intended solely for grammatical, spelling, stylistic correction or reference formatting, which do not constitute a substantive intellectual contribution. In the absence of the use of generative AI technologies, it is not necessary to include this statement in the manuscript. |
Focus and Scope

A BOR tem como meta publicar e disseminar trabalhos de pesquisa básica e aplicada, bem como artigos de divulgação e de atualização em pesquisa odontológica, contemplando variados desenhos metodológicos dentro das diferentes áreas de excelência da SBPQO. BOR accepts submissions of the following types of original and review articles: Original Research (full article or Short Communication), Systematic Review (and Meta-Analysis), as well as Letters to the Editor. All submissions must be exclusive to BOR. Critical literature reviews are articles written at the invitation of the editor. Manuscripts and all related documentation must be submitted exclusively through ScholarOne Manuscripts™, via the online submission link. The process of evaluating the scientific content of the manuscript will only begin once the requirements described in these Instructions to Authors have been met. Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements will be returned to the corresponding author for adjustments. |

Peer review process
|
Pre-analysis: the Editor-in-Chief evaluates the manuscripts based on quality and scope of interest and decides whether to select the manuscript for peer review. Technical evaluation (standards): papers approved in the pre-analysis will be evaluated for compliance with the publication and documentation standards required for manuscript submission to the journal. In case of disagreement with the instructions, they will be returned to the authors for the necessary adjustments before being submitted to evaluation by the Associate Editors and reviewers. Peer review: after compliance with the required documentation, the manuscript will be assigned by the Editor-in-Chief to one of the Associate Editors registered in the system according to their respective area of expertise. The Associate Editor will select two reviewers according to their expertise and send the manuscript for evaluation. If the Associate Editor considers that the opinions received are insufficient for a conclusion, they must appoint other reviewer(s). Based on the opinions, the Associate Editor decides: rejection, if the manuscript has major deficiencies; acceptance; or corrections, in which case they must indicate in their comments the modifications to reformulate and improve the manuscript. BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH has a peer review process with double anonymization for manuscripts submitted to the journal; this process cannot be implemented for preprints, since authors and reviewers are known. In line with the principles of Open Science and transparency in evaluation, articles published in BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH will contain the name of the associate editor responsible for evaluating the manuscript. In addition, BOR will offer the following options for reviewers and authors to request or accept by mutual agreement:
1. publication of the reviews of approved articles with the optional identification of the reviewers; and Authors will be able to choose the options on the Evaluation Form on compliance with Open Science. Reviews constitute a new type of literature in the SciELO methodology and are treated similarly to research articles. In the peer review process, the use of AI in drafting reports violates confidentiality and may constitute a breach of ethics. Therefore, reviewers and editors should not input documents and reports into external AI systems, allowing only limited use to improve the writing of the report. Furthermore, AI should not make editorial decisions or scientific evaluations, nor should it make acceptance/rejection decisions, as merit-based interpretations should be exclusively human. Decision: The Editor-in-Chief will decide on the acceptance of the manuscript. When revision of the original is necessary, the manuscript will be returned to the corresponding author for modification. A revised version with the changes made and mandatorily highlighted in the file must be resubmitted by the authors and will be re-evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, and reviewers, as needed. When approved, the names of the Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editor will be published in the article. Approval: After approval regarding scientific merit, the authors will be asked for a final English language review. Final English Language Review After the manuscript is approved regarding scientific merit, the text must be submitted for a final English language review, to be carried out by a duly qualified and specialized individual or legal entity in providing academic text editing services in English. The linguistic review is the sole, exclusive, and non-transferable responsibility of the authors. Brazilian Oral Research (BOR) is not responsible for the quality of the English language writing, nor for any linguistic inadequacies remaining after revision. Failure to meet international standards of clarity, grammatical correctness, and suitability for academic English may prevent the publication of the manuscript, even after scientific approval. Brazilian Oral Research (BOR) may suggest names of professionals or companies with recognized experience in this area; however, authors remain free to choose the service that best suits them, provided that the technical qualification of the reviewer or the contracted company is duly proven. The file approved for publication must be exactly the same as the one submitted to the linguistic revision service, and no changes to the scientific content are permitted at this stage. The revision should be limited exclusively to linguistic aspects (grammar, vocabulary, fluency, style, and suitability for academic English), and any modification to the scientific content, data, analyses, or conclusions of the manuscript is prohibited. Personal revisions or revisions performed by collaborators without formal proof of technical qualification, as well as the use of artificial intelligence tools for linguistic revision purposes, will not be accepted. Exceptional cases may be evaluated by the journal's Editorial Board, upon formal justification and supporting documentation. The proof copy of the article will be sent to the corresponding author via email in PDF format so that, within 48 hours, they can provide final approval or correct and return the duly revised original. At this stage, only minor modifications, spelling corrections, and verification of illustrations will be accepted. Extensive modifications will imply re-evaluation by the reviewers and delay the publication of the work. If the proof is not returned within 48 hours, the Editor-in-Chief will consider the unaltered version as final. The inclusion of new authors is not permitted at this stage of the publication process. It is the sole responsibility of the authors to verify the proper use of their scientific names in the manuscript as well as their affiliations. |

BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH encourages the sharing of analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts, and additional materials, made available in open online repositories such as SciELO Data, Zenodo, Figshare and OSF, if they cannot be published in the work itself, this information must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles reporting research should indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the research and the results obtained. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a data availability statement for the data used or generated in the research underlying the texts. To ensure transparency in the process, the data and other documents deposited in open online repositories must be specified in the article's methodology, and their access links must be included in the same section. |
Charging fees
|
Brazilian Oral Research will charge a fee of R$ 150.00 (Brazilian reals) (for Brazilian corresponding authors) and US$ 35.00 (US dollars) (for foreign corresponding authors) per additional page over 10 published/printed pages (including figures and tables). This fee will apply to articles submitted to BOR after October 1st, 2023, and accepted for publication. Articles with up to 10 published/printed pages will not be charged. |
Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata, and Retraction
|
BRAZILIAN ORAL RESEARCH is committed to upholding the integrity of the literature and publishes Errata or Retraction Notices depending on the situation and in accordance with the COPE Retraction Guidelines. Corrections and retractions: Authors are expected to carefully consider the list and sequence of authors before submitting their manuscript and to forward the final list of authors at the time of submission. No additions or changes of authorship will be allowed during the evaluation stage or after the acceptance of the submitted text. The article already published in which the misconduct is identified remains indexed in the journal's database as retracted. The retraction documents the reason for the retraction duly referenced, through communication from the author or editor or other authorized agent and published in the same journal. The retraction can be partial when the misconduct applies to a specific part of the article, without, however, compromising the whole of the published research. The article cannot be "unpublished". Mistakes or errors, regardless of their nature or origin, which do not constitute misconduct, are corrected by means of errata. The journal will publish errata, corrections, or retractions as soon as possible. Any additions and modifications to the submitted text should only be made prior to acceptance of the manuscript and only if approved by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal. The Editor will only consider additions and modifications to the text in exceptional circumstances after the manuscript has been accepted. While the Editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended. |
Conflict of Interest Policy
|
They must be communicated not only by the authors but by everyone involved in the editorial process of a manuscript. Authors are obliged to disclose any potential conflict of interest. Conflicts of interest can be of personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. If there is even a potential conflict of interest, the author(s) must disclose this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. Authors must identify in the manuscript all financial support obtained for the work and other personal connections related to the work. If Associate Editors have a conflict of interest, such as articles submitted by authors from their department, research collaborators, or relatives, they should delegate decision-making to another Editor. Reviewers should consider any type of conflict of interest before evaluating the manuscript. This information must be answered on the ScholarOne submission system form. Working relationships with the author should be considered. |
Adoption of Similarity Checking Software
|
As part of its actions to prevent plagiarism, Brazilian Oral Research has adopted the text similarity identification service iThenticate and Crossref Alliance. Up to 30% similarity of the text is considered acceptable; above this, after verification, the author is notified so that they can review the text and plan to reduce the percentage to the established minimum. If there are any doubts or questions, the editor-in-chief contacts the corresponding author and, if necessary, all the authors. |
Sex and Gender Issues
|
The editorial team of Brazilian Oral Research, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, should always observe the Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines for reporting sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of findings. In addition, Brazilian Oral Research observes the policy of gender equity in the formation of its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee
|
Brazilian Oral Research reaffirms the principles embodied in the Declaration of Helsinki and requires that all research involving human beings, in the case of publication in this journal, be conducted in accordance with these principles and others specified in the respective ethics committees of the authors' institution. In the case of animal studies, the same ethical principles must also be followed. All studies carried out on humans or animals must be accompanied by a description in the 'Methods' section mentioning that the study has been approved by the Ethics Committees for Research with Humans or Animals of the institution indicated in the authors' affiliation, mentioning the protocol approval number. Authors must attach the approval statement from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research in the submission process. |

Presentation of the manuscript
|
The manuscript text should be written in English and provided in a digital file compatible with “Microsoft Word” (in DOC, DOCX, or RTF format). All figures (including those in layouts/combinations) must be provided in individual and separate files, according to recommendations described under the specific topic. Photographs, micrographs, and radiographs should be provided in TIFF format, according to the recommendations described under the specific topic. Charts, drawings, layouts, and other vector illustrations must be provided in a PDF format individually in separate files, according to the recommendations described under the specific topic. Video files may be submitted as per the specifications, including the author’s anonymity (for purposes of evaluation) and respect for the patient’s rights. Important: ScholarOne™ allows upload of a set of files up to 10 MB. In case the video file exceeds this size, it is possible to leave information about the link to access the video. The use of patients’ initials, names, and/or registry numbers is prohibited in the reproduction of clinical documentation. The identification of patients is prohibited. An informed consent statement, signed by the patient, or their guardian concerning the use of his/her image should be provided by the author(s) when requested by BOR. The Copyright legislation in force must be respected and the source cited when the manuscript reproduces any previously published material (including texts, charts, tables, figures, or any other materials). Main Text

Abstract: Must be presented as a single paragraph (without sub-divisions into sections), containing objective, methodology, results, and conclusions. In the System if applicable, use the Special characters tool for special characters. Keywords: Ranging from 3 (three) to 5 (five) main descriptors should be provided, chosen from the keywords registered at https://decs.bvsalud.org/ (no synonyms will be accepted). Introduction: This should present the relevance of the study, and its connection with other published works in the same line of research or field, identifying its limitations and possible biases. The objective of the study should be concisely presented at the end of this section. Methodology: All characteristics of the material relevant to the research topic must be provided (e.g., research subjects, sampling methods and sample details, materials and methods used, etc.). Experimental, analytical, and statistical methods should be described concisely, yet in sufficient detail to ensure reproducibility. Data from manufacturers or suppliers of products, equipment, or software should be explicitly stated in the first mention in this section, as follows: manufacturer's name, city, and country. Computer programs and statistical methods should also be specified. Unless the objective of the work is to compare specific products or systems, the commercial names of techniques, as well as scientific or clinical products or equipment, should only be cited in the "Methodology" and "Acknowledgments" sections, as appropriate. In the rest of the manuscript, including the title, generic names should be used. In manuscripts involving radiographs, microradiographs, or SEM images, the following information should be included: radiation source, filters, and kV levels used. Manuscripts reporting studies in humans must include evidence that the research was conducted ethically in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki (World Medical Association). The approval protocol number issued by an Institutional Ethics Committee must be cited. Authors should observe the reporting guidelines appropriate to the main study designs, as recommended by international initiatives for good practices in scientific research. To ensure the quality and transparency of the reporting, authors should adhere to the reporting guidelines recommended by the EQUATOR Network (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency of Health Research) https://www.equator-network.org/, according to the type of study. As examples, observational studies should follow the STROBE guidelines and the checklist should be submitted. Clinical trials should be reported according to the standardized CONSORT Statement protocol; systematic reviews and meta-analyses should follow PRISMA or Cochrane; scoping reviews should follow PRISMA ScR, etc. To ensure transparency, data and documents made available in open online repositories must be explicitly described, including access links. Results: should be presented in the same order in which the work was carried out, as described in the "Methodology" section. The most significant results should be described. Text, tables, and figures should not be repetitive. Results with statistical significance should be accompanied by their respective p-values. Tables: should be numbered and cited consecutively in the main text, in Arabic numerals. Tables should be submitted separately from the text in DOC, DOCX, or XLS format (they may be combined into a single file). Supplementary data and/or documents made available in open online repositories should be explicitly described, including access links. Discussion: should discuss the results of the study in relation to the working hypothesis and the relevant literature. It should describe the similarities and differences of the study in relation to other related studies found in the literature, and provide explanations for any differences found. It should also identify the study's limitations and make suggestions for future research. Do not re-present data or information already mentioned in the introduction or results. Conclusion: should be presented concisely and strictly based on the results obtained in the research. The details of the results, including numerical values, etc., should not be repeated. Acknowledgments: contributions from colleagues (for technical assistance, critical comments, services), as well as laboratories, institutions/institutes, etc.) should be reported, and any affiliation of authors with commercial firms should be disclosed. References: only publications in peer-reviewed journals will be accepted as references. Citations of references should be identified in the text using superscript Arabic numerals. The complete list of references should come after the "Acknowledgments" section, and the references should be numbered and presented according to the Vancouver Style, in accordance with the guidelines provided by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, as presented in Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus. The correct presentation of references is the sole responsibility of the authors. (See References section). Funding: This section should describe the source(s) of funding for the research. Clearly identify the sponsor, financial aid, grant, and/or program, including the name of the funding entity and the funded grant number. Author contributions: Authorship should be attributed according to the ICMJE. Authors should describe their participation in the manuscript's preparation, using the CREDiT taxonomy framework, contained in the Submission Form and also during manuscript submission on ScholarOne. The ORCID record for each author should be specified and linked to the ScholarOne record. Declarations: Declarations of conflict of interest and availability of research data should be added. Graphical abstract: To promote scientific dissemination, authors are recommended to prepare a graphical abstract to summarize the study design and its main findings in a visual format. The graphical abstract consists of a concise and visually appealing summary of the study, allowing readers to quickly understand its central message and scientific relevance. It should clearly represent the essential elements of the work—research question, methodology, main results, and conclusions—in a logical and accessible manner. When preparing it, it is recommended to emphasize the main message of the study, opt for a simple and coherent layout, and illustrate each component using icons, diagrams, and schematics, with minimal text. Use the following parameters for constructing the graphic abstract: a) Page orientation in vertical feed configuration (4:5); dimensions of 91.4mm wide / 114.3mm high (or 1080 px wide / 1350 px high); b) JPEG/PNG/TIFF format with a minimum resolution of 300 DPI; c) Background color preferably white. Additional data: Spelling of scientific terms: scientific names (microbiological, zoological, and botanical nomenclature binomials) should be written out in full, as well as the names of compounds and chemical elements, in the first mention in the main text. Units of measurement: must be presented according to the International System of Units (http://www.bipm.org or http://www.inmetro.gov.br/consumidor/unidLegaisMed.asp). Figures: photographs, micrographs and radiographs must have a minimum width of 10 cm, a minimum resolution of 500 dpi, and must be provided in TIFF format. Graphs, drawings, diagrams and other vector illustrations must be provided in PDF format. All figures must be submitted individually in separate files (Figure 1a, Figure 1b, Figure 2...) and not inserted into the text file. Figures must be numbered and cited consecutively in the body of the text, in Arabic numerals. Figure captions must all be inserted together at the end of the text, after the references. |
Clinical Trials and Pre-Clinical Studies in Animals
|
Clinical Trials according to the CONSORT guidelines. The clinical trial registration number and the research registration name will be published along with the article. Manuscripts reporting studies performed on animals must follow the guidelines ARRIVE (https://arriveguidelines.org/resources) and also include proof that the research was conducted in an ethical manner, and the approval protocol number issued by an Institutional Ethics Committee should be cited. In case the research contains a gene registration, before submission, the new gene sequences must be included in a public database, and the access number should be provided to BOR. Characteristics and layouts of types of manuscripts

Original Research Limited to 30,000 characters including spaces (considering the introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments, tables, references, declarations, funding, author contributions, graphic abstracts and figure legends). Short Communication Limited to 10,000 characters including spaces (considering the introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments, tables, references, declarations, funding, author contributions, graphical abstracts). Critical Review of Literature (non-systematic) The submission of this type of manuscript will be performed only by invitation of the BOR Publishing Commission. All manuscripts will be submitted to peer-review. This type of manuscript must have a descriptive and discursive content, focusing on a comprehensive presentation and discussion of important and innovative scientific issues, with a limit of 30,000 characters including spaces (considering the introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments, tables, references, declarations, funding, author contributions, graphic abstracts and figure legends). It must include a clear presentation of the scientific object, logical argumentation, a methodological and theoretical critical analysis of the studies, and a summarized conclusion.
