Educação em Revista

Educação em Revista is a publication of the Postgraduate Program in Education: Knowledge and Social Inclusion of the College of Education, Federal University of Minas Gerais (FaE/UFMG). It aims to contribute to the dissemination of scientific knowledge in education by producing original, innovative research from universities and research institutions in Brazil and abroad, with critical reflections and proposals for the educational field, educational policies, and teaching at all levels. It publishes original manuscripts in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, from different theoretical and methodological perspectives that effectively contribute to the academic debate in the field of education. |
Brief Background
|
Educação em Revista was created in 1985, with two publications annually. In 2009, its periodicity became quarterly. In 2011, the ahead-of-print system was implemented, whereby approved articles are previously announced before final publication in the journal. Educação em Revista was the first Brazilian educational journal to implement this type of publication. In 2012, the periodicity was changed to publish every four months. In 2016, the journal began to be published exclusively in electronic format and, from 2017 onwards, through continuous publication, allowing greater speed and transparency in the processing of manuscripts. Based on this history, the journal Educação em Revista has become a recognized publication within the national and international academic community, and researchers seek it for the publication of their manuscripts. In 2021, in line with Open Science, Educação em Revista adopted an editorial policy involving: the acceptance of preprints, the availability of supplementary research materials, and the opening of the peer review process. It is important to highlight that the experience with open peer review began in 2023. The contribution of section editors is duly credited in the published article that underwent open peer review. The journal publishes the reviews, and the reviewers receive a statement of their opinion on the manuscript and can also validate their activity on Publons. With these practices, Educação em Revista seeks to promote greater transparency in knowledge production processes and facilitate the sharing and reuse of data and other content from research. Educação em Revista has been classified as A1 in the Qualis-Capes system since 2013, in the field of Education. It is one of the journals classified as “specific to the educational field” in an evaluation promoted by the Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Educação - ANPEd, in 2006, when it received the “National A” rating. In the 2021-2024 Qualis Capes ranking, Educação em Revista remained at A1. |
Open Access
|
This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full texts of the articles, track them for indexing, pass them as data to software or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Open Science Compliance
|
Open Science is based on eight principles: Open Access, Open Data, Open Peer Review, Citizen Science, Open Source, Open Notebook, Open Educational Resources, and Scientific Social Networks. Educação em Revista, in its editorial policy, is committed to these principles, which are geared towards transparency in the processes of evaluation, editing, and curation of research communication objects, playing an essential role in promoting credibility and transparency. In line with these principles, Educação em Revista has adopted a series of practices, such as an open access policy, a code of good practices, and the use of social media to disseminate published manuscripts. For articles with multiple authors, the role of each author is required. Furthermore, we recommend sharing the analysis data, instruments, scripts, and materials available in the SciELO Data online repository. Authors should use file formats in which the data can be extracted, aiming to maximize accessibility and reuse of the dataset. If the data cannot be published, this information must be indicated in the manuscript. The process begins with the submission of manuscripts previously deposited on the SciELO preprint server, available at https://preprints.scielo.org/, or in other open online repositories, such as: https://zenodo.org/; https://figshare.com/; https://osf.io/. The manuscript submitted to Educação em Revista previously deposited on the SciELO preprint server or in another repository duly informed by the author(s) will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee, which will verify the relevance of the article to the scope of the journal and the respective proposed section. If approved, the manuscript will be submitted to the plagiarism and self-plagiarism verification program called Check For Plagiarism. |
Ethics in Publication
|
Educação em Revista is committed to observing good ethical practices in manuscript management, involving editors, reviewers, and authors. Author(s) should adopt the “SciELO Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication” and the “Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Academic Publications” as a reference in their manuscripts recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). The publication of articles presenting research results involving human beings and conducted in Brazil must be approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP-Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa), according to CNS Resolution number 466, of December 12, 2012 (Ethics in Research in Human and Social Science); and CNS Resolution number 510, of April 7, 2016 (Ethics in Research in Human and Social Sciences). Decree 12,651, of October 7, 2025, which regulates Law 14,874, of May 28, 2024, establishes the principles, guidelines, and rules for conducting research with human beings and institutes the National Ethics Committee for Research. If the research has not been reviewed and approved by a CEP, it must comply with the ethical parameters adopted by Educação em Revista. Manuscripts with foreign authors must follow the ethical guidelines of their country of origin. This information should be mentioned in the body of the manuscript, in the methodology section, or at the end of the article, after the references. The use of Artificial Intelligence Resources The ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) resources in scientific research means that these technologies should be employed to support, and not replace, critical analysis or the research process. Authors are responsible for verifying and correcting AI-generated results, ensuring that there is no data manipulation, plagiarism, or violation of intellectual property. Listing AI as the author is also prohibited, as it entails responsibilities that only human beings can assume. The use of AI to generate images, graphs, or figures must be described in detail in the methods section, always ensuring the authenticity of the process. An explicit and transparent declaration is mandatory for authors when using AI resources, meaning they must explicitly state which resources were used, at what stage of the process, and how they contributed to the manuscript's creation. This information should be included in the methods to strengthen ethics and trust in scientific publication. Generating data using AI is prohibited; researchers must apply rigorous techniques for data collection and interpretation. Editors are responsible for monitoring compliance with this policy, reviewing AI usage declarations, and updating guidelines as needed to preserve the quality and integrity of scientific articles. Focus and Scope

Educação em Revista is an open-access electronic journal with continuous publication that aims to disseminate original and relevant scientific production developed in the field of Education. The journal values the originality of submitted manuscripts, their importance to researchers in the field of Education, theoretical and methodological rigor, and the quality and relevance of the evidence presented by the authors. The manuscript can be published in Educação em Revista if it offers an original contribution to the discussion of the theme in education. Manuscripts may be submitted in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The translation into English is recommended for the approved articles as part of the journal's internationalization process. |
Digital Preservation

The digital archive preservation policy of Educação em Revista involves making new and previous articles available in PDF format and other formats in the indexing databases to which it belongs, such as SciELO, Redalyc, and Portal Educ@. In addition, all published texts are self-archived on the UFMG Periodicals Portal, available at https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista, which has an institutional backup system and local backups, aiming for maximum data preservation. Preprints
|
Educação em Revista accepts the publication of preprint articles. In addition to accelerating the communication of research results, the author can receive feedback from readers on the study and make changes deemed pertinent. A preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and deposited on reliable preprint servers before being submitted to a journal. The following servers accept preprint submissions: SciELO Preprints, Zenodo, Figshare and OSF. Processing Steps 1. The manuscript is prepared using the template available on the website (without journal identification): https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista/templates 2. The manuscript is deposited in the preprint repository: https://preprints.scielo.org or other acceptable repositories. 3. The manuscript is approved in the repository, and a DOI is assigned.
4. After the preprint is published, the manuscript must be submitted to the journal's system: https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista/about/submissions 5. The manuscript is evaluated according to editorial criteria. 6. If approved in the initial technical evaluation, it proceeds to single-blind peer review or may be selected for the open peer review process. |
Peer Review Process
|
The editorial policy of the journal Educação em Revista adopts the following criteria for evaluating submissions: compliance with formatting requirements; originality; thematic relevance; clarity and precision in delimiting the object; theoretical and methodological consistency of the content; analytical rigor; timeliness; text quality and suitability to the editorial scope. The manuscript may be submitted in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. The submitted manuscript goes through three evaluation phases: 1. The first consists of a screening that examines the suitability of the manuscript to the scope of the journal and analyzes its degree of similarity using the Check For Plagiarism software; 2. The second phase refers to the evaluation of the manuscript's quality carried out by the Associate Editors; 3. The third phase consists of the peer review process, with the Associate Editors indicating at least two reviewers. If there is substantial divergence in the opinions of two reviewers, a third will be called upon to support the decision of the Section Editor. The journal Educação em Revista uses two types of peer review: 1. Single-blind peer review: In this type of review, the reviewers know who the authors are, but the authors do not know who the reviewers are. 2. Open peer review: In this type of review, the authors and the reviewers know each other's identities. The journal adopted the single-blind peer review as a standard format. The editors-in-chief and section editors, based on the principles of Open Science and taking as a reference the information submitted by the authors in the Open Science Compliance Form, will invite authors and reviewers to begin the evaluation process, which will be finalized upon acceptance by both. The final decision of the Editor-in-Chief, responsible for the final stage of submission, will be supported by the recommendation of the Associate Editor and the reviewers, as well as the author's implementation of the recommended adjustments, when applicable. An article may be rejected in evaluation phases 1 and 2. If the article reaches the third phase of the evaluation process, it is up to the section editors, after peer review, to recommend acceptance, rejection, or reformulation of the work. It is emphasized that the opinions of the associate editor and reviewers are advisory. The result of the evaluation will be sent to the authors and may include: acceptance; mandatory corrections, submission to another journal; or rejection. “Approval with mandatory corrections” implies checking the final version of the manuscript by the section editor. Educação em Revista publishes in the final version of the article the name of the section editor responsible for the peer review process of the manuscript. |
Open Data
|
Providing data, code, and other materials in an open format contributes to reproducibility, transparency, collaboration, efficiency, and data economy, among other important aspects for scientific practices and knowledge production. Once a manuscript is approved, the data, code, and other materials must be submitted to the Educação em Revista repository on Scielo Dataverse and reviewed by the journal's Data Editorial team, which is also responsible for assisting authors in implementing any necessary adjustments. Since 2025, Educação em Revista has included information on data availability at the end of articles approved for publication, in accordance with the Scielo Guidelines (2018). |

Educação em Revista does not charge fees for manuscript submission and publication. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
|
Educação em Revista is committed to good publishing practices, in accordance with the standards of research integrity endorsed by the scientific community. It also guides its editorial decisions according to the principles of transparency and best practices in academic publications, discussed internationally within the framework of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). When submitting a manuscript, authors must declare that they have respected all ethical guidelines concerning the integrity of the scientific activities carried out during the research. They also need to inform funding sources, such as research agencies. If applicable, authors must declare that the ethical principles have been submitted to and approved by the ethics committee of their institution. Adherence to good ethical practices in research is the sole responsibility of the authors. The editorial policy of Educação em Revista is based on the principles of the SciELO Codes of Ethics, present in the “Guidelines to the Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication”; on the “Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Academic Publications” recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); on the principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); and on the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). In cases that they do not constitute misconduct, the journal may publish an erratum, retraction, or addendum, following the SciELO guidelines available in the Guide for the registration, marking, and publication of Erratum, Guide for the registration, marking, and publication of Retraction, and Guide for the registration, marking, and publication of Addendum. Falsification or fabrication of results will be considered serious misconduct. If there are doubts regarding the research results in the manuscript, supporting data for the research methodology may be requested. Educação em Revista receives reports of suspected misconduct in published manuscripts via its institutional email: revista@fae.ufmg.br. The flowcharts of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) are used to analyze misconduct. If retraction is necessary, Educação em Revista follows the SciELO Retraction Guidelines. The manuscript remains in the database in retracted status. Manuscripts with more than one author must present the specific contribution of each author to the writing process. The journal operates in accordance with the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy), maintained by the Consortia for Advancing Standards in Research Administration Information (CASRAI). CRediT considers 14 different authorship or contribution roles: Project Management, Formal Analysis, Conceptualization, Data Curation, Writing – First Draft, Review and Editing –, Investigation, Methodology, Funding Acquisition, Resources, Software, Supervision, Validation, and Visualization. All authors must present their contribution(s) to the writing of the manuscript in the specified form. No additional authors will be accepted after the manuscript is submitted. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest

Educação em Revista is committed to good publishing practices, in accordance with the research integrity standards endorsed by the scientific community. Conflicts of interest can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial. Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Authors, editors, and reviewers must declare any conflict of interest related to the research or the manuscript, in accordance with the SciELO Guidelines to Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication and the Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Academic Publications, recommended by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME. Adopting these guidelines helps editors detect potential fraud and poor publishing practices. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
|
For the identification of misconduct, including plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and republication of articles, as well as data falsification, Educação em Revista uses Check For Plagiarism software, which produces a similarity report that includes a percentage score from 0% to 100%. All articles exceeding 25% similarity, including self-citation, will be reviewed by the Section Editor, who will request a statement from the authors if necessary. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
|
The field of scientific research and academic communication is being profoundly impacted by the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) resources, especially those classified as generative. Educação em Revista recognizes the potential of these resources to assist authors, reviewers, and editors in various tasks, but reiterates the need for their use to be ethical, transparent, and responsible. The ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in scientific research means these technologies should support, not replace, critical analysis or the research process. Authors must verify and correct AI-generated results, ensuring there is no data manipulation, plagiarism, or violation of intellectual property. Also, listing AI as an author or co-author is prohibited, as authorship involves responsibilities that only humans can fulfill. Transparency in the use of AI is also necessary, which means explicitly stating which resources were used, at what stage of the process, and how they contributed to the manuscript. This information should be included in the methods section of the manuscript and clearly indicated on the form provided by the journal. It aims to strengthen ethics and trust in scientific publication. Hiding the use and content of AI is an ethical error that violates the principles of transparency and honesty. Generating data using AI is prohibited. Researchers are expected to use rigorous techniques for data collection and interpretation. All uses of AI resources must be reported in the submitted text, clearly describing which parts of the manuscript were generated using AI, including the name and version. Under no circumstances should AI be listed as an author of the manuscript, as the responsibility for the content of the text, including its accuracy and integrity, rests exclusively with the author(s). Permitted uses include improving language and clarity of the text, grammatical and spelling correction, assisting in literature review (with critical human supervision), and optimizing figures or tables, provided that they do not misleadingly alter the scientific data and that the use is duly disclosed. Reviewers may use AI tools to assist in reviewing their own reviews (grammatical correction). It is strictly forbidden to submit any part of the manuscript under evaluation – whether text, data, or figures – to generative AI resources, to avoid breaches of confidentiality and potential copyright conflicts. Educação em Revista recommends that authors, reviewers, and editors who use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools follow the Guide to the use of Artificial Intelligence tools and resources in research communication on the SciELO Network and the document Guidelines for authors, reviewers, and editors on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in manuscripts submitted to Educação em Revista. |
Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial board of Educação em Revista, along with its authors, is committed to observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). These guidelines provide a set of principles that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and the interpretation of findings. Also, Educação em Revista also adopts the DEIA principles (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) and follows a gender equity policy when forming its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee

Educação em Revista requires authors to submit their research to the Ethics Committees of their respective institutions when studies involve human beings. This requirement does not apply to studies that fall under the exemption provisions of CNS Resolution number 510, of April 7, 2016. This information must be included in the methodology section and in the form provided by the journal. Manuscripts with foreign authors must follow the ethical guidelines of their country of origin, clearly indicating these guidelines in the manuscript. When submitting an article for publication in Educação em Revista, authors must declare that all ethical guidelines concerning the integrity of the scientific activities carried out during the research have been respected, as well as provide information on funding sources and research agencies. Adherence to the best ethical practices in research is the sole responsibility of the authors. |

The article must be submitted through the journal's portal at: https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista/about/submissions, after completing registration and creating a login and password, and agreeing to the terms contained in the electronic submission form. |

Citations and References
|
Citations should follow the format (Author's Last Name, year) or (Author's Last Name, year, p. xx). Different titles by the same author, published in the same year, should be differentiated by adding a letter after the date (Author's Last Name, Year, p. xx). Citations within the text should follow the technical standard NBR 10520 of July 19, 2023, from the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT-Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas) or APA – 7th Edition and meet the following criteria: a) Textual quotations of up to three lines should be incorporated into the paragraph, transcribed in quotation marks and accompanied by the following information in parentheses: last name of the author of the quotation, year of publication and page number; b) Textual quotations that exceed three lines should be placed in a separate paragraph, indented 4 cm from the left margin, in size 11, and without quotation marks. References should contain only the authors and texts cited in the work and be presented at the end of the text, in alphabetical order, following the recent standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) (https://www.normasabnt.org/citacoes/) or the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition. |

Authors must complete and sign the Open Science Compliance Form, provided by SciELO, and the Information Form on Research Ethics and the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Resources, the published preprint file, and submit them as supplementary documents during the online submission process. |
Financing Statement
|
Authors of texts produced from research that received funding must indicatethe full name(s) of the funding agency(ies) in the manuscript, after the references and in the appropriate field of the electronic form, followed by the process number(s) or contract number(s). |
DOI (Digital Object Identifier) Registration

All manuscripts approved for publication in Educação em Revista will receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) in the final publication stage. |
Editorial Production
|
Once the peer review process is complete, approved manuscripts enter the editorial production phase. Authors will be guided by the journal's secretariat on procedures for preparation, bibliographic standardization, and language revision. Authors are responsible for revision costs. The journal will pay for the translation costs if subsidized by the university or funding agencies through editorial calls. The journal will recommend professionals to perform these services and will inform authors of the deadlines to be met. Authors will also be guided on publishing the manuscript in a second language (English, in the case of articles in Portuguese or Spanish; Portuguese, in the case of articles in English). |
